The relationship between controlling coaching behavior, fear of failure, and achievement goals in youth ice hockey players

2018

A notable volume of research has been conducted on controlling coaching behavior, fear of failure, and achievement goals. However, limited research has been done utilizing all three elements in a single study. Previous literature suggests that fear of failure is positively related to mastery-avoidance (MAv), performance-approach (Papp), and performance-avoidance (PAv) achievement goals (Conroy & Elliot, 2004) and can change achievement motivation goals more towards avoidance behavior (Conroy & Elliot, 2004). Conroy and Coatsworth (2007) have argued that controlling coaching behavior may influence the progress of athletes’ fear of failure. This study involved 336 competitive youth ice hockey …

Urheilija vai opiskelija? : urheilulukiolaisten identiteettiprofiilit

2018

Tutkimus on osa ”Finnish Longitudinal Dual Career Study” -tutkimushanketta, jossa seurataan urheilulukiossa opiskelevien nuorten psykososiaalista kehitystä ja akateemista suuntautumista lukiovuosien aikana urheiluun liittyvän urakehityksen rinnalla (Ryba ym. 2016). Syksyllä 2015 suoritettuun kyselytutkimukseen osallistui 391 urheilulukion ensimmäisellä luokalla o…

Promoting Students’ Health at University: Key Stakeholders, Cooperation, and Network Development

2021

Background: Cooperation among university units is considered a cornerstone for the promotion of students' health. The underlying mechanisms of health-promoting networks at universities have rarely been examined so far. Shedding light on partnerships is generally limited to the naming of allied actors in a network. Objectives and Methods: In this study, we used network analysis intending to visualize and describe the positions and characteristics of the network actors, and examine organizational relationships to determine the characteristics of the complete network. Results: The network analysis at hand provides in-depth insights into university structures promoting students' health comprisi…

Finnish athletes' expectations about physiotherapy in sport injury rehabilitation

2011

As the injured athlete's primary and most frequent contact within the sport injury rehabilitation process, the physiotherapist is in a unique position to influence the athlete's psychological rehabilitation alongside the physical recovery (Barefield & McCallister, 1997). The important question of whether or not athletes expect physiotherapists to address their psychological issues, however, has not yet been investigated in detail. Moreover, scales that measure athletes’ expectations of physiotherapy are also scarce and available only in the English language. Therefore, the purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to adapt the Expectation About Athletic Training (EAAT) questionnaire into Finni…

A collective case study of athletic identity and successful injury rehabilitation

2015

A severe injury is an identity threatening situation for competitive athletes. Previous literature suggests that having a strong athletic identity can be beneficial for the athlete when injured. To the date there has been little research on how athletic identity is managed during that challenging time of injury. The purpose of this study was to explore how athletic identity is managed during the injury and rehabilitation phase before returning to competitive sport. Knowing the determinants of athletic identity management allows practitioners to adjust their interventions toward specific issues when working with injured athletes. The present study is a qualitative, collective case study. Her…

Players with high physical fitness are at greater risk of injury in youth football.

2022

The aim of this study was to investigate physical fitness, football-specific skills and their association with injury risk in youth football. Altogether 447 male and female players aged 9 to 14 years (median 12 years) participated in performance tests and prospective follow-up. The physical fitness tests included five-jump test for distance, 30-m sprint, football-specific figure of eight agility, countermovement jump, and Yo-Yo intermittent endurance test level 1. The football-specific skill tests included dribbling and passing tests. Injuries and exposure were registered during the 20-week follow-up. Our candidate risk factors were low/high level of physical fitness measured with a composi…

Comparison of inter-trial recovery times for the determination of critical power and W' in cycling

2017

Critical Power (CP) and W’ are often determined using multi-day testing protocols. To investigate this cumbersome testing method, the purpose of this study was to compare the differences between the conventional use of a 24-h inter-trial recovery time with those of 3 h and 30 min for the determination of CP and W’. Methods: 9 moderately trained cyclists performed an incremental test to exhaustion to establish the power output associated with the maximum oxygen uptake (p V O2max), and 3 protocols requiring time-to-exhaustion trials at a constant work-rate performed at 80%, 100% and 105% of p VO2max. Design: Protocol A utilised 24-h inter-trial recovery (CP24/W’24), protocol B utilised 3-h in…
