Being in transit and in transition The experience of time at the place, when living with severe incurable disease - a phenomenological study

2014

The aim of this study is to describe the experience of time as it presents itself at the place being situated when living with severe incurable disease and receiving palliative care. The empirical data consist of 26 open-ended interviews with 23 patients receiving palliative care at home, at a palliative day care; in a palliative bed unite in hospital or in a nursing home in Norway. A common meaning of a shifting space for living emerged from the analysis and was revealed through three different aspects: (i) Transition from a predictable to an unpredictable time: To live with severe incurable disease marks a transition to a changed life involving an ongoing weakened and altered body with bo…

Study of Temperature Heterogeneities at Sub-Kilometric Scales and Influence on Surface–Atmosphere Energy Interactions

2019

The retrieval of land surface temperature (LST) from remote sensing techniques has been studied and validated during the past 40 years, leading to important improvements. Accurate LST values are currently obtained through measurements using medium resolution thermal infrared (TIR) sensors. However, the most recent review reports demonstrated that the future TIR LST products need to obtain reliable temperature values at a high spatial resolution (100 m or higher) to study temperature variations between different elements in a heterogeneous kilometric area. The launch of high-resolution TIR sensors in the near future requires studies of the temporal evolution and spatial heterogeneities of th…

AEROgui: A graphical user interface for the optical properties of aerosols

2014

Atmospheric aerosols have an uncertain effect on climate and serious impacts on human health. The uncertainty in the aerosols' role on climate has several sources. First, aerosols have great spatial and temporal variability. The spatial variability arises from the fact that aerosols emitted in a certain place can travel thousands of kilometers, swept by the winds to modify the destination region's climate. The spatial variability also means that aerosols are inhomogeneously distributed in the vertical direction, which can lead to a differential effect on the energy balance depending on the aerosols' altitude. On the other hand, aerosols experience physical and chemical transformations in th…

Enhanced Role of Transition Metal Ion Catalysis During In-Cloud Oxidation of SO2

2013

Global sulfate production plays a key role in aerosol radiative forcing; more than half of this production occurs in clouds. We found that sulfur dioxide oxidation catalyzed by natural transition metal ions is the dominant in-cloud oxidation pathway. The pathway was observed to occur primarily on coarse mineral dust, so the sulfate produced will have a short lifetime and little direct or indirect climatic effect. Taking this into account will lead to large changes in estimates of the magnitude and spatial distribution of aerosol forcing. Therefore, this oxidation pathway-which is currently included in only one of the 12 major global climate models-will have a significant impact on assessmen…

Effective broadband refractive index retrieval by a white light optical particle counter.

2009

A new approach to retrieve the effective broadband refractive indices (nbroad, eff) of aerosol particles by a white light aerosol spectrometer (WELAS) optical particle counter (OPC) is presented. Using a tandem differential mobility analyzer (DMA)-OPC system, the nbroad, eff are obtained for both laboratory and field applications. This method was tested in the laboratory using substances with a wide range of optical properties. With the obtained nbroad, eff, WELAS aerosol size distributions can be corrected. Therefore, this method can be used for instrument calibration in both laboratory and field measurements. The retrieved effective broadband refractive indices for the scattering aerosols we…

Intercomparison of spanish advanced lidars in the framework of EARLINET

2007

To extend and reinforce the action of the EARLINET- ASOS project, a nucleus of Spanish advanced lidars was created. Four systems were intercompared satisfactorily in terms of backscatter coefficients at two elastic wavelengths. Peer Reviewed

A Comparative Analysis of Aerosol Microphysical, Optical and Radiative Properties during the Spring Festival Holiday over Beijing and Surrounding Reg…

2018

ABSTRACT Using ground-based data, meteorological observations, and atmospheric environmental monitoring data, a comparative analysis of the microphysical and optical properties, and radiative forcing of aerosols was conducted between three stations in different developed environments during a severe air pollution episode during the Spring Festival over Beijing. During the most polluted period, the daily peak values of the aerosol optical depth were ~1.62, ~1.73, and ~0.74, which were about 2.6, 2.9, and 2.1 times higher than the background levels at the CAMS, Xianghe, and Shangdianzi sites, respectively. The daily peak values of the single scattering albedo were ~0.95, ~0.96, and ~0.87. The…

Etude diagnostique de nouvelles données climatiques : les réanalyses. Exemples d'application aux précipitations en Afrique tropicale

2000

This study establishes an objective diagnosis of NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data reliability over tropical Africa at intra-seasonal to interannuel space scale. The reanalysis data are an original database available over 1958-1998 period which combines observations and atmospheric model outputs and allows us to better understand global scale atmospheric dynamics. The study of data reliability allows us to identify a great number of recommendations for using them. Over tropical Africa, the homogeneous period which should be extracted goes from 1968 to 1998. Before this year, reanalysed datasets should be used with greatest caution. However, during this period, the SMWDA, a statistical method used t…

Violence, exclusion and the role of children and adolescents moral features in the sport domain: The save project

2019

The prevention of violence and exclusion in the sport domain is one of the principal priorities of the European Union Programs. Sport Against Violence and Exclusion (SAVE) Project is an initiative co-founded by the Erasmus Plus Programme of the European Commission, whose aim is to train coach to recognize and manage violent and exclusion episodes in the sport situation. According to the psychological literature, one of the predictors of aggressiveness and antisocial tendencies is morality. In particular, for what concerns children, a less mature moral reasoning is associated to a greater tendency to aggress, while for adolescents, the moral atmosphere, in particular, the perception of the c…

Practical strategies for stable operation of HFF-QCM in continuous air flow

2013

Currently there are a few fields of application using quartz crystal microbalances (QCM). Because of environmental conditions and insufficient resolution of the microbalance, chemical sensing of volatile organic compounds in an open system was as yet not possible. In this study we present strategies on how to use 195 MHz fundamental quartz resonators for a mobile sensor platform to detect airborne analytes. Commonly the use of devices with a resonant frequency of about 10 MHz is standard. By increasing the frequency to 195 MHz the frequency shift increases by a factor of almost 400. Unfortunately, such kinds of quartz crystals tend to exhibit some challenges to obtain a reasonable signal-to…
