Fundamental-mode cutoff in liquid-filled Y-shaped microstructured fibers with Ge-doped core

We report on the cutoff characteristics of a Ge-doped Y-shaped microstructured fiber in which the holes are filled with a liquid of refractive index higher than silica but lower than the Ge-doped core. It is found that the cutoff wavelength was very sensitive to temperature variations as a result of the refractive index changes of the liquid. The basic properties of such a fiber permit the fabrication of wideband tunable short-pass filters, as well as temperature sensors with high sensitivity. A temperature sensitivity of 25 nm/degrees C is reported.

Multioctave midinfrared supercontinuum generation in suspended-core chalcogenide fibers

An As2S3 fiber-based supercontinuum source that covers 3500 nm, extending from near visible to the midinfrared, is successfully reported by using a 200-fs-pulsed pump with nJ-level energy at 2.5 μm. The main features of our fiber-based source are two-fold. On the one hand, a low-loss As2S3 microstructured optical fiber has been fabricated, with typical attenuation below 2 dB/m in the 1-4 μm wavelength range. On the other hand, a 20-mm-long microstructured fiber sample is sufficient to enable a spectral broadening, spreading from 0.6 to 4.1 μm in a 40 dB dynamic range.

Two-core transversally chirped microstructured optical fiber refractive index sensor

We present a sensing architecture consisting of a two-core chirped microstructured optical fiber (MOF) for refractive index sensing of fluids. We show that by introducing a chirp in the hole size, the MOF can be a structure with decoupled cores, forming a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in which the analyte directly modulates the device transmittance by its differential influence on the effective refractive index of each core mode. We show that by filling all fiber holes with analyte, the sensing structure achieves high sensitivity (transmittance changes of 300 per RIU at 1.42) and has the potential for use over a wide range of analyte refractive index.

Optical measurements of ground-state properties of short-lived nuclei in resonance cells

Hyperfine structure and isotope shift of radioactive Hg, Au and Cd isotopes have been determined by optical spectroscopy. In all cases the atoms were confined in a resonance cell. The various variants of the cell technique and alternative methods as the resonance ionization spectroscopy related to the investigation of short-lived nuclei are described, and some results are discussed.

Abstract The state of the art of research on vibrational spectrometry–based quantitative methodologies was evaluated from the literature compiled in Analytical Abstracts from 1980. Medium and near infrared, Raman spectrometry, and photoacoustic methods of analysis were considered. Blue luminescent amino-functionalized graphene quantum dots as a responsive material for potential detection of metal ions and malathion

Large amounts of hazardous and toxic substances in the environment require non-toxic, cheap, easy, rapid, and sensitive methods for their detection. Blue luminescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were produced by electrochemical cleavage of graphite electrodes followed by gamma irradiation in the presence of ethylenediamine (EDA). Modified dots were able to detect metal ions (Co2+, Pd2+, Fe3+) due to photoluminescence quenching. The highest sensitivity was detected for the sample irradiated at a dose of 25 kGy. Plasmonic and diffractive nanostructures for light trapping—an experimental comparison

Metal nanoparticles and diffractive nanostructures are widely studied for enhancing light trapping efficiency in thin-film solar cells. Both have achieved high performance enhancements, but there are very few direct comparisons between the two. Also, it is difficult to accurately determine the parasitic absorption of metal nanoparticles. Here, we assess the light trapping efficiencies of both approaches in an identical absorber configuration. Gain lifetime measurement of a Ni-like Ag soft X-ray laser

International audience; Experimental results of a two-stage Ni-like Ag soft X-ray laser operated in a seed-amplifier configuration are presented. Both targets were pumped applying the double-pulse grazing incidence technique with intrinsic travelling wave excitation. The injection of the seed X-ray laser into the amplifier target was realized by a spherical mirror. The results show amplification of the seed X-ray laser and allow for a direct measurement of the gain lifetime. The experimental configuration is suitable for providing valuable input for computational simulations. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America
