Effects of E-Cigarette Exposure on Prenatal Life and Childhood Respiratory Health: A Review of Current Evidence

2021

In the last decade, widespread use of E-cigarettes (EC) has occurred all over the world. Whereas, a large amount of evidence on harm to children from conventional cigarette exposure is available, data on health effects in this population throughout different vulnerability windows are still a matter of concern. Exposure to EC during pregnancy may compromise placental function, resulting in fetal structural abnormalities. Specifically, this may cause physio-pathologic changes in the developing lung, which in turn may impair respiratory health later in life. Furthermore, there is evidence that using EC can cause both short- and long-term respiratory problems in the pediatric population and the…

Gut microbiome and atrial fibrillation - results from a large population-based study

2023

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an important heart rhythm disorder in aging populations. The gut microbiome composition has been previously related to cardiovascular disease risk factors. Whether the gut microbial profile is also associated with the risk of AF remains unknown. Methods We examined the associations of prevalent and incident AF with gut microbiota in the FINRISK 2002 study, a random population sample of 6763 individuals. We replicated our findings in an independent case–control cohort of 138 individuals in Hamburg, Germany. Findings Multivariable-adjusted regression models revealed that prevalent AF (N = 116) was associated with nine microbial genera. Incident AF (N = 5…

Septo-optic dysplasia and schizencephaly: a case report

2012

Introduction: Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is an uncommon developmental disorder involving variable midline brain structures, characterized by optic nerve hypoplasia, dysgenesis of septum pellucidum and pituitary- hypothalamic dysfunction with consequent endocrine deficits. The association of septo-optic dysplasia and cortical dysplasia is described as septo-optic dysplasia-plus. Reports on patients with septo-optic dysplasia-plus have been rare. Other distinct features, which occur especially when cerebral cortical abnormalities are also present (SOD- plus), consist of significant generalized developmental delay and/or spastic motor deficits. Methods: We report a 10-year-old boy with septo-…

IL TRATTAMENTO INTEGRATO DELLA SCHIZOFRENIA. UN MANUALE PER LA GESTIONE CLINICA

2017

Bridging the gap between research into biological and psychosocial models of psychosis.

2015

Paul Bebbington's recent Special Article provides an excellent synthesis of recent advances in psychosocial research on psychosis. However, we doubt that a model based solely on social epidemiology and cognitive theory can totally describe psychosis, and to be fair, Bebbington does not suggest that it does. A complete model must also incorporate what we have learned from non-social epidemiology, neuroscience, and genetics. Evidence indicates that both the social risk factors that interest Bebbington and biological risk factors, such as abuse of stimulants and cannabis, can provoke psychotic symptoms by dysregulating striatal dopamine. The role of neurodevelopmental deviance also needs to be…
