Efficiency studies for a tracking detector based on square 1.5m long scintillating fibers read out by SiPM

Abstract A tracking detector based on 1.5 m long scintillating fibers is being developed for the electron arm of the KAOS spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Measurements on light attenuation, particle detection efficiencies and accidental coincidence rates with a prototype set-up using 2 × 2 mm 2 fibers read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are presented. The highest efficiency at the lowest accidental coincidence rate was reached for high trigger thresholds at the largest SiPM bias voltages. Lifetime measurements and terminating structures in87Nb

Two experiments have been performed using the Ni-58(S-32,3p) reaction at 135 MeV with Gammasphere and the Microball to study the high-spin structure of the transitional nucleus Nb-87. The first experiment using a thin target provided a considerable extension and refinement of the level scheme, as well as firm spin assignments from directional correlation of oriented nuclei. Sub-picosecond lifetimes were measured in the second backed-target experiment using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The lifetimes imply a rather modest average deformation of beta(2)similar to0.1, but with considerable variation from state to state. Digital rock physics: Effect of fluid viscosity on effective elastic properties

Abstract This paper is concerned with the effect of pore fluid viscosity on effective elastic properties using digitized rocks. We determine a significant velocity dispersion in wave propagation simulations by the variation of the pore fluid viscosity. Several attenuation regimes are considered which may contribute to this observation. Starting point is a virtual rock physics approach. Numerical simulations of effective transport and effective mechanical properties are applied to statistically representative rock samples. The rock microstructure is imaged by 3D X-ray tomography. Inversion symmetric vs. asymmetric excitations and the low-temperature universal properties of Ar:N 2 and Ar:N 2 :CO glasses

The bias energies of various two-level systems (TLSs) and their strengths of interactions with the strain are calculated for Ar:N2 glass. Unlike the case in KBr:CN, a distinct class of TLSs having weak interaction with the strain and untypically small bias energies is not found. The addition of CO molecules introduces CO flips which form such a class of weakly interacting TLSs, albeit at much lower coupling than that at which they are typically observed in solids. We conclude that because of the absence of a distinct class of weakly interacting TLSs, Ar:N2 is a non-universal glass, the first such system in three dimensions and in ambient pressure. The ARCADE (Atmospheric Research for Climate and Astroparticle DEtection) project is a 3 years project funded by MIUR, that aims to study the aerosol attenuation of UV light in atmosphere using multiple instruments and techniques, as those commonly used in the cosmic rays community: elastic Lidar, Raman Lidar, side-scattering measurements using a distant laser source. All measurements will be acquired on the same air mass at the same time, in a semi-desertic site near Lamar, Colorado (U.S.). In the framework of multi-fragmentation experiments the evolution towards two- (or more) particle correlations with stable and radioactive beams calls for the development of a novel detection system featuring high angular and energy resolution and able to reconstruct the particles momentum at high precision. The proposed detection system, named FARCOS (Femtoscopy ARray for COrrelations and Spectroscopy) will be beneficial for different physical cases. The vibrational properties of glasses in the THz range differ very much from what is expected from Debye's elasticity theory: the density of states (DOS) deviates from Debye's ω2 law [the “boson peak” (BP)], the sound velocity shows a negative dispersion in the BP frequency regime and there is a strong increase in the sound attenuation near the BP frequency. These anomalies are related to an anomalous temperature dependence of the specific heat and thermal conductivity in the 10 K regime. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of absorption of the aerosol particles on the extinction of solar and sky radiation. The efficiency factors have been computed as well as the extinction, the scattering, the absorption, and the scattering function for the whole turbid atmosphere with help of the Mie theory for a complex index of refraction for a more or less absorbent medium. From these values the intensities of diffuse sky radiation have been obtained.
