Three-Dimensional Separation and Characterization of Fractures in X-Ray Computed Tomographic Images of Rocks

Open fractures can affect petrophysical properties of their host rock masses, as well as fluid transport and storage, so characterization of them is important to both industrial and research scientists. X-ray Computed Tomography (CT), a non-destructive technique for 3D imaging of various materials, shows such fractures well in rock samples. However, separation and characterization of fractures in CT data is complicated when a scanned sample contains narrow and intersecting fractures, because narrow fractures become blurred when thinner than the scanner resolution and their value approximates the one of the matrix, and because intersecting features are difficult to individually characterize.…

Abstract. Various geoscientific applications require a fast prediction of fracture permeability for an optimal workflow. Hence, the objective of the current study is to introduce and validate a practical method to characterize and approximate single flow in fractures under different stress conditions by using a core-flooding apparatus, in situ X-ray computed tomography (CT) scans and a finite-volume method solving the Navier–Stokes–Brinkman equations. Understanding seismic path biases and magmatic activity at Mount St Helens volcano before its 2004 eruption

SUMMARY In volcanoes, topography, shallow heterogeneity and even shallow morphology can substantially modify seismic coda signals. Coda waves are an essential tool to monitor eruption dynamics and model volcanic structures jointly and independently from velocity anomalies: it is thus fundamental to test their spatial sensitivity to seismic path effects. Rateless Codes Performance Analysis in Correlated Channel Model for GEO Free Space Optics Downlinks

Settore ING-INF/03 - TelecomunicazioniFree Space Optics (FSO) technologies for satellite communications offer several advantages: wide bandwidth high rate capability immunity to electromagnetic interference and small equipment size. Thus they are suitable for inter-satellite links deep space communications and also for high data rate ground-to-satellite/satellite-to-ground communications. Nevertheless FSO links suffer impairments that cause power signal degradation at the receiver. Scattering and absorption cause power signal attenuations predictable by suitable deterministic models. Optical turbulence causes random irradiance fluctuations which can generate signal fading events and can thereby only be predicted by statistical models. Attenuation and fading events can corrupt FSO links and so it would be recommended to add mitigation error codes on the communication link. FSO channel can be described as an erasure channel: fading events can cause erasure errors. We have identified in rateless codes (RCs) a suitable solution to be employed in FSO links. RCs do not need feedback and they add a redundant coding on the source data that allows the receiver to recover the whole payload despite erasure errors. We implemented two different of rateless codes: Luby Transform (LT) and Raptor. We analyzed their performances on a simulated turbulent GEO FSO downlink (1 Gbps - OOK modulation) at a 106 μm wavelength and for different values of zenith angles. Assuming a plane-wave propagation and employing Hufnagel-Valley we modeled the downlink using: 1) a temporal correlated channel model based on Gamma-Gamma probability distribution and 2) an irradiance covariance function that we converted on a time function using Taylor frozen eddies hypothesis. Our new channel model is able to simulate irradiance fluctuations at different turbulence conditions as it will be shown in the full paper. We will also report performance results of LT and Raptor codes at overhead range varying between 0 and 50% and for different values of source packets.Settore ING-INF/01 - Elettronica

A Gabor-based Technique for Bias Removal in MR images

Magnetic Resonance images are often characterized by irregularly displaced luminance fluctuations that are called bias artifact. This disturb is due to a drop in signal intensity caused by the distance between imaged sample and receiver coil. An original approach to bias removal in Magnetic Resonance images is presented, which is based on the use of Gabor filter to extract the artifact. The proposed technique restores the image using a correction model, which is derived from the attenuation of signal diffusion across the tissues. This article investigates the use of the Sicilian suffix -ḍḍu/-afor the expression of ap-proximation. On the basis of a survey of a corpus of ethnotexts and the outputs of a translation questionnaire, we propose that approximation is a core value in the semantic network of the suffix, expressing a certain distance fromthe default values conveyed by the base. Heterogeneous shear elasticity of glasses: the origin of the boson peak

The local elasticity of glasses is known to be inhomogeneous on a microscopic scale compared to that of crystalline materials. Their vibrational spectrum strongly deviates from that expected from Debye's elasticity theory: The density of states deviates from Debye's law, the sound velocity shows a negative dispersion in the boson-peak frequency regime and there is a strong increase of the sound attenuation near the boson-peak frequency. By comparing a mean-field theory of shear-elastic heterogeneity with a large-scale simulation of a soft-sphere glass we demonstrate that the observed anomalies in glasses are caused by elastic heterogeneity. The fatigue of the musculoskeletal system during running may decrease the ability of the body to absorb those shock waves and increase the risk of injury.
