A distance metric on binary trees using lattice-theoretic measures
1990
A so called height function which is a strictly antitone supervaluation is defined on binary trees. Via lattice-theoretic results and using the height function, we can define a distance metric on binary trees of size n which can be computed in expected time O(n 3/2 )
An efficient upper bound of the rotation distance of binary trees
2000
A polynomial time algorithm is developed for computing an upper bound for the rotation distance of binary trees and equivalently for the diagonal-flip distance of convex polygons triangulations. Ordinal tools are used.
Phase separation of symmetrical polymer mixtures in thin-film geometry
1995
Monte Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation model of symmetrical polymer blends confined between two “neutral” repulsive walls are presented for chain lengthNA=NB=32 and a wide range of film thicknessD (fromD=8 toD=48 in units of the lattice spacing). The critical temperaturesTc(D) of unmixing are located by finite-size scaling methods, and it is shown that\(T_c (\infty ) - T_c (D) \propto D^{ - {1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 {v_3 }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {v_3 }}} \), wherev3≈0.63 is the correlation length exponent of the three-dimensional Ising model universality class. Contrary to this result, it is argued that the critical behavior of the films is ruled by two-dimensi…

A modified niche model for generating food webs with stage-structured consumers : The stabilizing effects of life-history stages on complex food webs
2021
1. Almost all organisms grow in size during their lifetime and switch diets, trophic positions, and interacting partners as they grow. Such ontogenetic development introduces life-history stages and flows of biomass between the stages through growth and reproduction. However, current research on complex food webs rarely considers life-history stages. The few previously proposed methods do not take full advantage of the existing food web structural models that can produce realistic food web topologies. 2. We extended the niche model by Williams & Martinez (2000) to generate food webs that included trophic species with a life-history stage structure. Our method aggregated trophic species …
Titanium Lattice Structures Produced via Additive Manufacturing for a Bone Scaffold: A Review
2023
The progress in additive manufacturing has remarkably increased the application of lattice materials in the biomedical field for the fabrication of scaffolds used as bone substitutes. Ti6Al4V alloy is widely adopted for bone implant application as it combines both biological and mechanical properties. Recent breakthroughs in biomaterials and tissue engineering have allowed the regeneration of massive bone defects, which require external intervention to be bridged. However, the repair of such critical bone defects remains a challenge. The present review collected the most significant findings in the literature of the last ten years on Ti6Al4V porous scaffolds to provide a comprehensive summa…
An adventurous learning journey. Physiotherapists’ conceptions of learning and integrating cognitive functional therapy into clinical practice
2020
Background: Recent low back pain guidelines recommend a BPS approach to the management of disabling low back pain. However, the most effective way of teaching physiotherapists to implement these approaches remains unknown. The present qualitative study aimed to explore physiotherapists' conceptions of learning and integrating Cognitive Functional Therapy (CFT) into clinical practice in Finnish primary health care. Methods: We interviewed 22 physiotherapists, who participated in four to six days of CFT workshops. A phenomenographic approach was used to explore the variation in the physiotherapists' conceptions of this process. Results: Four themes emerged from the data: 1) membership of work c…
Psychological Approaches to Origins and Treatments of Somatoform Disorders
2010
Medically unexplained symptoms are the defining feature of somatoform disorders (SFD) as currently included in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, and the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Edition. Cognitive, behavioral, biological, and social variables are important to our understanding of SFD. Research in the past decade has highlighted the central role of (a) prolonged attention allocation to bodily sensations, (b) the dysfunctional role of catastrophizing symptoms as signs of severe illness, (c) neuroendocrine alterations, and (d) the influence of illness behavior (e.g., the avoidance of physical activity) on the maintenance and chronici…
