Perceptual Self-Awareness in Seneca, Augustine, and Olivi
2013
This article traces the philosophical idea of self-perception from the times of ancient Stoicism to the thirteenth century by analyzing the views of Seneca, Augustine, and Olivi. The central argument is that they defend the same idea according to which self-preservation and the appropriate use of one’s body requires awareness thereof, despite the obvious contextual differences and the uncertainty of direct historical connections between the authors. They think that this kind of self-awareness does not belong only to human beings, because irrational animals need to perceive their bodies, the functions of their bodily parts, and to perceive themselves as living beings in order to act appropri…
Sophisticated humor against Covid: the Polish case
2021
The analysis undertaken in the article focuses on a group of memes selected from the database which drew on culture-specific references. Specifically, they embrace the memories of socialist times and call on references to comic films and easily recognized characters in order to bring out the re-discovered absurdity of the current Covid situation. This material seems ideal to revisit Raskin’s early notion of sophistication, which was broadly argued to derive from intertextuality as well complexity of references that function as sources of humor. In all the examples discussed we can observe the intertextual and metatextual elements, multiple levels and shifts in points of view and attitudes a…
The workers' value of the remaining employment contract duration
2005
We introduce and apply a method for estimating workers' marginal willingness to pay for job attributes employing data on job search activity. Worker's willingness to pay for the remaining duration of the employment contract is derived. We provide evidence that workers attach substantial value to the remaining contract duration. A temporary worker with a remaining contract of six months is willing to pay about 10% of the monthly wage to increase the contract by one month. This discussion paper has resulted in a publication in Economica, 2008, 75(297), 116-39.
Study on the Reputation of the (MASS) Media in Romania
2021
Abstract Part of a bigger research project conducted by Media Reputation Lab (Media REP Lab) on the reputation of media in Europe, the study explores the reputation of media among informed population in Romania. A sample of 100 cases was involved in the online survey taking place in December 2019. The results provide a description of the country’s media reputation (media in general: radio, print, digital and television). For each one of these media, the valuation obtained by each of the reputational attributes (credibility, rigor, impartiality, willingness to rectify) by the informed population would be indicated. Moreover, insights on the knowledge and use, as well as on the reputation (ov…

Towards an understanding of the caring phenomenon - why is it so topical? : a search for its role and its attributes in holistic education
2016
Traditional liberal education has provided one-size-fits-all schooling, followed by neoliberal policies in the past 30 years, resulting in losing the purpose of education to build well-rounded personalities and to ensure quality education for all. Instead, the ideal today is the homo economicus able to further personal goals on self-interest, and the global divide between the haves and have-nots has increased. The research problem rises from the alternative view to the purpose of education, to fostering the learner’s full human growth, and focuses on holistic education as expressed in the ethics of care theory of Nel Noddings and my life experiences in four diverse learning cultures. Meta-a…
Towards Action-Oriented User Interface Design
2011
The ultimate goal of user interface design is to develop a product which people can use to reach their goals. By action we normally refer to our attempts to reach certain goals, and this is why it is natural to think user interface design as an activity we engage in when designing tools, instruments or technologies for people to realize their action goals. This paper suggests a novel action-oriented user interface development method that aims to develop a user interface interaction model. This interaction model is based on an organized tree structure composed of node states with relevant usability-related attributes and operations between the nodes. peerReviewed

Motivation and academic achievement in mathematics: a longitudinal study in the early stages of education
2017
Emotion Eliciting Events in the Workplace: An Intercultural Comparison
2007
Different emotional experiences at the work place are evaluated in respect to their influence on job satisfaction. A sample of 75 Japanese employees and 169 German employees rated their emotional level following daily hassles in the work place that were attributed on the two dimensions: locus of causality and controllability. It was predicted that the same attribution pattern of daily hassles leads to different emotional responses and different levels of job satisfaction between employees with an interdependent and independent cultural background. Results indicate that equal attribution patterns of job related daily hassles lead to different emotional experiences between the two cultural gr…
