The dynamics of motivation, emotion, and task performance in simulated achievement situations
2020
Abstract This study aimed to examine associations between motivation, emotion, and task performance in simulated achievement situations. A group of sixth grade students (n = 190) completed an achievement task. Situational information on task value, success expectations, emotions, effort, task performance, and causal attributions was collected and information on subsequent academic achievement was obtained from school registers. The results showed, first, that high task value, high expectancy of success, and high positive emotions before a task contributed to a higher level of effort during the task. This, in turn, was related to better task performance. Second, high expectancy of success pr…
Misconceptions of the p-value among Chilean and Italian academic psychologists
2016
Common misconceptions of p-values are based on certain beliefs and attributions about the significance of the results. Thus, they affect the professionals' decisions and jeopardize the quality of interventions and the accumulation of valid scientific knowledge. We conducted a survey on 164 academic psychologists (134 Italian, 30 Chilean) questioned on this topic. Our findings are consistent with previous research and suggest that some participants do not know how to correctly interpret p-values. The inverse probability fallacy presents the greatest comprehension problems, followed by the replication fallacy. These results highlight the importance of the statistical re-education of researche…

Player performance, satisfaction, and video game enjoyment
2009
An experiment (N = 74) was conducted to investigate the impact of game difficulty and player performance on game enjoyment. Participants played a First Person Shooter game with systematically varied levels of difficulty. Satisfaction with performance and game enjoyment were assessed after playing. Results are not fully in line with predictions derived from flow and attribution theory and suggest players to (1) change their view on their own performance with its implications for enjoyment with increasing game experience and (2) to switch strategically between different sources of fun, thus maintaining a (somewhat) positive experience even when performance-based enjoyment is low.

Reconsidering authorship in the Ciceronian corpus through computational authorship attribution
2019
In recent years, methods of computational authorship attribution have offered promising results for the reattribution of classical texts. We use and further develop these methods to verify the authorship of several texts belonging or related to the Ciceronian corpus: Rhetorica ad C. Herennium, De inventione, De optimo genere oratorum, and Commentariolum petitionis. We use two classifiers, Support Vector Machine and Convolutional Neural Network, of which the latter is more accurate except in regard to certain aspects of vocabulary. The most important of our results is that Commentariolum petitionis seems to be authored by Marcus Cicero, not by his brother Quintus. Negli ultimi anni metodi co…
Optimistic, defensive-pessimistic, impulsive and self-handicapping strategies in university environments
1998
Abstract A person-oriented approach was used to investigate what types of achievement strategy people apply in university environments, and how these are associated with their academic achievement, related satisfaction and personal well-being. Two hundred and fifty-four undergraduates filled in first the Cartoon-Attribution-Strategy Test, the Strategy and Attribution Questionnaire, Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale and the revised Beck's Depression Inventory at the beginning of their studies, and one year later an academic satisfaction scale. Two years later, they again filled in the same measures. Their academic achievement was coded yearly from university archives. Four types of achievement s…
Psychological Variables and Reality Judgment in Virtual Environments: The Roles of Absorption and Dissociation
2009
Literature on virtual reality (VR) and psychology has focused on the influence that some basic psychological processes have on VR. Although psychological processes may be defined as common to all humans, there are individual differences that might make it difficult to provide the same VR experience for everyone. Of the several personality and psychological variables that might be relevant to the VR field, this study focuses on two: absorption and dissociation. Both psychological dimensions are deeply interrelated and might play an important role in the immersion of subjects in virtual environments and in the reality attributions they make. Thus, the purpose of this study was to ascertain pe…
