Exploring the patient journey to diagnosis of Gaucher disease from the perspective of 212 patients with Gaucher disease and 16 Gaucher expert physici…

2017

Gaucher disease (GD) is a rare hereditary disorder caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme β-glucocerebrosidase. Diagnosis is challenging owing to a wide variability in clinical manifestations and severity of symptoms. Many patients may experience marked delays in obtaining a definitive diagnosis. The two surveys reported herein aimed to explore the patient journey to diagnosis of GD from the perspectives of Gaucher expert physicians and patients. Findings from the surveys revealed that many patients experienced diagnostic delays and misdiagnoses, with nearly 1 in 6 patients stating that they were not diagnosed with GD for 7years or more after first consulting a doctor. Physicians an…

The Prevalence of sexual abuse in institutions : Results from a representative population-based sample in Germany

2018

The lifetime prevalence of sexual abuse in institutional settings in Germany was examined in a sample representative of the general adult population (N = 2,437). Participants completed a survey on whether they had ever experienced such abuse, its nature (contact, noncontact, forced sexual, intercourse), the type of institution (e.g. school, club), and the relationship of perpetrator to victim (peer, caregiver, staff member). Overall, 3.1% of adult respondents (women: 4.8%, men: 0.8%) reported having experienced some type of sexual abuse in institutions. Adult women reported higher rates of all types than did men, with rates of 3.9% versus 0.8% for contact sexual abuse, 1.2% versus 0.3% for …

Poisson's ratio and the incompressibility relation for various strain measures with the example of a silica-filled SBR rubber in uniaxial tension tes…

2010

Abstract The controversy in the definition of Poisson's ratio (PR) as a material constant is discussed in this study. PR of an isotropic material is usually defined as the ratio, taken with the opposite sign, between its lateral and longitudinal strains under the action of longitudinal stresses. However, if deformations of the material are large, the value of PR depends on the strain measure used. Five different measures of strain are considered, and a unified relation in terms of stretch ratios is obtained for calculating the PR. It is demonstrated that only for Hencky strains is the value of PR of an incompressible material constant and equal to 0.5 over its entire extension range. Other …

Exploring students’ proof comprehension of the Cauchy Generalized Mean Value Theorem

2019

AbstractUndergraduate students majoring in mathematics often face difficulties in comprehending mathematical proofs. Inspired by a number of studies related to students’ proof comprehension, and Mejia-Ramos et al.’s study in particular, a test was designed in relation to the proof comprehension of the Cauchy Generalized Mean Value Theorem (CGMVT). The test mainly focused on (a.) investigating students’ understanding of relations between the statements within the CGMVT proof and (b.) the relations between the CGMVT and other theorems. Thirty-five first-year university students voluntarily participated in this study. In addition, 10 of these students were subsequently interviewed to seek thei…

The Light Ray transform in Stationary and Static Lorentzian geometries

2019

Given a Lorentzian manifold, the light ray transform of a function is its integrals along null geodesics. This paper is concerned with the injectivity of the light ray transform on functions and tensors, up to the natural gauge for the problem. First, we study the injectivity of the light ray transform of a scalar function on a globally hyperbolic stationary Lorentzian manifold and prove injectivity holds if either a convex foliation condition is satisfied on a Cauchy surface on the manifold or the manifold is real analytic and null geodesics do not have cut points. Next, we consider the light ray transform on tensor fields of arbitrary rank in the more restrictive class of static Lorentzia…

Determining an unbounded potential from Cauchy data in admissible geometries

2011

In [4 Dos Santos Ferreira , D. , Kenig , C.E. , Salo , M. , Uhlmann , G. ( 2009 ). Limiting Carleman weights and anisotropic inverse problems . Invent. Math. 178 : 119 – 171 . [Crossref], [Web of Science ®], [Google Scholar] ] anisotropic inverse problems were considered in certain admissible geometries, that is, on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary which are conformally embedded in a product of the Euclidean line and a simple manifold. In particular, it was proved that a bounded smooth potential in a Schrödinger equation was uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in dimensions n ≥ 3. In this article we extend this result to the case of unbounded potentials, namely tho…

Anisotropy and symmetry for elastic properties of laminates reinforced by balanced fabrics

2001

In this article, we present a theoretical study on elastic properties of laminates composed by balanced fabric layers. Using the polar representation method for plane elastic tensors, we first describe some properties of symmetry of a general laminate composed by balanced fabrics and we write the formulas expressing positions of its axes of symmetry. Then, limiting our study to laminates composed of identical plies, we solve two problems of symmetry of the laminate elastic tensors: uncoupling and quasi-homogeneity. We found all the solutions of the uncoupling problem for the case of 3-, 4- and 5-ply laminate and all those of the quasi-homogeneity problem for the case of 4-, 5- and 6-ply lam…

Integral holomorphic functions

2004

We define the class of integral holomorphic functions over Banach spaces; these are functions admitting an integral representation akin to the Cauchy integral formula, and are related to integral polynomials. After studying various properties of these functions, Banach and Frechet spaces of integral holomorphic functions are defined, and several aspects investigated: duality, Taylor series approximation, biduality and reflexivity. In this paper we define and study a class of holomorphic functions over infinite- dimensional Banach spaces admitting integral representation. Our purpose, and the motivation for our definition, are two-fold: we wish to obtain an integral repre- sentation formula …

Coexistence of Mediterranean tits: A multidimensional approach

2013

[EN] Differential traits (e.g., feeding at different heights in trees) have evolved to allow the coexistence of putative competitors; such traits have been well studied in small passerines (e.g., Paridae), mainly during the winter. However, few studies have been carried out during the breeding season, when competition could be more intense. We applied here a multidimensional approach, examining ecological (prey type and size, and nesting habitat characteristics) and life history (timing of maximum nestling food demand) traits that might help to explain the coexistence of great (Parus major), crested (Lophophanes cristatus), and coal (Periparus ater) tits breeding in a Mediterranean pine for…
