Zur Rolle von Sprachen an finnischen Hochschulen : Eine Umfrage unter dem Hochschulpersonal

2010

Suomessa on perinteisesti ymmärretty vieraiden kielten opiskelun tärkeys. Suomalaisissa peruskouluissa on opiskeltu vierasta kieltä pakollisena oppiaineena jo 1970-luvulta saakka. Viime vuosikymmeninä vieraiden kielten opiskelun into on kuitenkin laantunut, ja erityisesti valinnaisten kielten opiskelu on selkeästi vähentynyt. Samalla kuitenkin suomalainen työelämä kansainvälistyy, ja yhä useammilla aloilla vieraan kielen taidot ovat tarpeen. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää monikielisyyden, eli useiden vieraiden kielten osaamisen ja käytön, merkitystä suomalaisissa korkeakouluissa sekä erityisesti saksan ja ruotsin kielen roolia työkielinä. Kyselytutkimuksen avulla selvitettiin …

Boundary discretization based on the residual energy using the SGBEM

2007

Abstract The paper has as objective the estimation of the error in the structural analysis performed by using the displacement approach of the Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method (SGBEM) and suggests a strategy able to reduce this error through an appropriate change of the boundary discretization. The body, characterized by a domain Ω and a boundary Γ−, is embedded inside a complementary unlimited domain Ω∞⧹Ω bounded by a boundary Γ+. In such new condition it is possible to perform a separate valuation of the strain energies in the two subdomains through the computation of the work, defined generalized, obtained as the product among nodal and weighted quantities on the actual boundar…

A dilution test for the convergence of subseries of a monotone series

2010

Cauchy's condensation test allows to determine the convergence of a monotone series by looking at a weighted subseries that only involves terms of the original series indexed by the powers of two. It is natural to ask whether the converse is also true: Is it possible to determine the convergence of an arbitrary subseries of a monotone series by looking at a suitably weighted version of the original series? In this note we show that the answer is affirmative and introduce a new convergence test particularly designed for this purpose.

Quantitative study of cardiac wall motion from cine-MRI using frequency-based optical flow methods

2010

The aim of this thesis is to study parietal desynchronisation of the left ventricle from conventional cine-MRI. The first part of our work consisted in the quantification of the left ventricle wall motion of the heart directly from conventional retrospective SSFP type cine-MRI sequences used in the study of cardiac function. The developed methods for measuring displacements within the images are frequency-based optical flow methods. These techniques seem to be particularly adapted to MRI specificities. We have demonstrated their robustness in the event of Rician noise and pixel intensity variations as a function of time. These variations are often associated with the through-plane motion of…

An approximate technique for determining in closed-form the response transition probability density function of diverse nonlinear/hysteretic oscillat…

2019

An approximate analytical technique is developed for determining, in closed form, the transition probability density function (PDF) of a general class of first-order stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with nonlinearities both in the drift and in the diffusion coefficients. Specifically, first, resorting to the Wiener path integral most probable path approximation and utilizing the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality yields a closed-form expression for the system response PDF, at practically zero computational cost. Next, the accuracy of this approximation is enhanced by proposing a more general PDF form with additional parameters to be determined. This is done by relying on the associated Fokke…

Computational aspects in 2D SBEM analysis with domain inelastic actions

2009

The Symmetric Boundary Element Method, applied to structures subjected to temperature and inelastic actions, shows singular domain integrals. In the present paper the strong singularity involved in the domain integrals of the stresses and tractions is removed, and by means of a limiting operation, this traction is evaluated on the boundary. First the weakly singular domain integral in the Somigliana Identity (S.I.) of the displacements is regularized and the singular integral is transformed into a boundary one using the Radial Integration Method; subsequently, using the differential operator applied to the displacement field, the S.I. of the tractions inside the body is obtained and through…

Generalized differential transform method for nonlinear boundary value problem of fractional order

2015

Abstract In this paper the generalized differential transform method is applied to obtain an approximate solution of linear and nonlinear differential equation of fractional order with boundary conditions. Several numerical examples are considered and comparisons with the existing solution techniques are reported. Results show that the method is effective, easier to implement and very accurate when applied for the solution of fractional boundary values problems.

Reflection and Refraction of Singularities for Wave Equations with Interface Conditions given by Fourier Integral Operators

1992

Cauchy problems for hyperbolic operators often have the property, that the singularities of the initial data propagate along the bicharacteristic strips of the operator (cf. e.g. [13]). We consider, in the linear case, the situation where the bicharacteristics hit transversally a spacelike interface, which is ‘active’ in the sense that the interface condition is given via certain Fourier integral operators. Taking the identity, we obtain classical transmission conditions. A suitable functional analytic setting is furnished by the interaction concept [3], [6], [7], which covers very general mutual influences of evolution phenomena on different domains.
