The automated pancreas: A review of technologies and clinical practice

2021

Insulin pumps and glucose sensors are effective in improving diabetes therapy and reducing acute complications. The combination of both devices using an algorithm-driven interoperable controller makes automated insulin delivery (AID) systems possible. Many AID systems have been tested in clinical trials and have proven safety and effectiveness. However, currently, none of these systems are available for routine use in children younger than 6 years in Europe. For continued use, both users and prescribers must have sound knowledge of the features of the individual AID systems. Presently, all systems require various user interactions (e.g. meal announcements) because fully automated systems ar…

Quantification of vesicles in differentiating human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells by automated image analysis

2005

A new automated image analysis method for quantification of fluorescent dots is presented. This method facilitates counting the number of fluorescent puncta in specific locations of individual cells and also enables estimation of the number of cells by detecting the labeled nuclei. The method is here used for counting the AM1-43 labeled fluorescent puncta in human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells induced to differentiate with all-trans retinoic acid (RA), and further stimulated with high potassium (K+) containing solution. The automated quantification results correlate well with the results obtained manually through visual inspection. The manual method has the disadvantage of being slow, labor-i…

Remote estimation of blood pulse pressure via temporal tracking of reflected secondary speckles pattern

2011

We present a novel technique for remote noncontact blood pulse pressure measurement. It is based on tracking both temporal and amplitude changes of reflected secondary speckle produced in human skin when illuminated by a laser beam. The implemented technique extracts the difference between the systolic and the diastolic blood pressure. Experimental results are presented showing good agreement when compared with conventional measurement methods.

Determination of Human Granulocyte Elastase by the Immunoactivation Method on the Hitachi® 717 Automated Analyser

1991

This paper describes a fully mechanized homogeneous immunoassay using the immunoactivation method for the rapid and specific determination of human granulocyte elastase (EC 3.4.21.37) in plasma. The method uses anti-elastase antibody fragments from sheep, conjugated to horseradish peroxidase. These enzyme-antibody conjugates bind to the elastase-alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor complex present in plasma. A separate sample blank with non-specific sheep antibody fragments conjugated to horseradish peroxidase corrects for errors introduced by the sample matrix. Measurements were performed with the clinical chemistry analyser Hitachi 717. A single determination can be performed in 10 min, requiring…

Automated classification of focal breast lesions according to S-detect: validation and role as a clinical and teaching tool

2018

Abstract PURPOSE: To assess the diagnostic performance and the potential as a teaching tool of S-detect in the assessment of focal breast lesions. METHODS: 61 patients (age 21-84 years) with benign breast lesions in follow-up or candidate to pathological sampling or with suspicious lesions candidate to biopsy were enrolled. The study was based on a prospective and on a retrospective phase. In the prospective phase, after completion of baseline US by an experienced breast radiologist and S-detect assessment, 5 operators with different experience and dedication to breast radiology performed elastographic exams. In the retrospective phase, the 5 operators performed a retrospective assessment a…

Automated determination of clozapine and major metabolites in serum and urine.

1997

Clozapine is an atypical neuroleptic that is increasingly used for the treatment of schizophrenia. An automated method was developed for the routine quantification of clozapine and its major metabolites, N-desmethylclozapine and clozapine N-oxide, in human serum and urine by column switching and online high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The method included adsorption of clozapine and its metabolites on a cyanopropyl-coated clean-up column (10 microns; 10 mm x 4.0 mm ID), washing interfering serum constituents to waste by deionized water, and, after column switching, separation on C18 ODS Hypersil reversed-phase material (5 microns; 250 mm x 4.6 mm ID). The co…

Environmental and Product Contamination during the Preparation of Antineoplastic Drugs with Robotic Systems

2018

Abstract Background Robotic systems are designed to minimize the exposure to antineoplastic drugs during automated preparation. However, contamination cannot be completely excluded. The aim of the study was to evaluate the contamination with antineoplastic drugs on the working surfaces and on the outer surface of the ready-to-use products (infusion bags and syringes) during automated preparation with different versions of a robot and manual preparation. Methods Surface contamination with platinum (Pt) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was measured by wipe sampling and quantified by voltammetry for Pt and GC-MS for 5-FU. Sampling was performed on pre-defined locations in the working areas before and…

Unsupervised recognition of retinal vascular junction points.

2014

Landmark points in retinal images can be used to create a graph representation to understand and to diagnose not only different pathologies of the eye, but also a variety of more general diseases. Aim of this paper is the description of a non-supervised methodology to distinguish between bifurcations and crossings of the retinal vessels, which can be used in differentiating between arteries and veins. A thinned representation of the binarized image, is used to identify pixels with three or more neighbors. Junction points are classified into bifurcations or crossovers according to their geometrical and topological properties. The proposed approach is successfully compared with the state-of-t…

Superresolved imaging of remote moving targets.

2006

We present a superresolving approach that allows one to exceed the diffraction limit and recover highly resolved contours of moving targets from a sequence of low-resolution images. The presented approach is suitable for remote sensing applications. The resolution decoding algorithm that is used to recover the high-resolution features of the target can be run partially via optical means and that way can be used to reduce the required computational complexity.

The article focuses on the automatization of loading, stowing and unloading ports operations, from the point of view of the impact of the technologies on the system of liabilities of the …
