Adopting magnetocaloric heat pumping and refrigeration for electrical vehicle
2017
International audience; Refrigeration process is based on conventional gas compression and expansion techniques. However, this technique has numerous disadvantages since it generates greenhouse gas and is partly responsible for global warming. This paper exposes analternative method: magnetocaloric refrigeration that presents the advantage to combine high-energy efficiency and respect of theenvironment. Magnetic heat pumping and cooling is compared to conventional method applied on vehicle air conditioning system.Simulation results are used to demonstrate the approach.

Electromagnetic Sensitivity Analysis and Shape Optimization Using Method of Moments and Automatic Differentiation
2009
Sensitivity analysis is an important part of gradient-based optimization of electromagnetic devices. We demonstrate how sensitivity analysis can be incorporated into an existing in-house method of moments solver with a relatively small amount of labor by using a technique called automatic differentiation (AD). This approach enables us to obtain (geometrical) sensitivities of the discrete solution with accuracy up to numerical precision. We compare the assembly time and memory usage of the modified and original solvers. Moreover, we optimize the shape of a dipole antenna and the dimensions of a Yagi-Uda array using the presented AD technique, traditional response level finite difference sens…
Localisation visuelle basée sur la reconnaissance du lieu dans les environnements changeants
2017
In many applications, it is crucial that a robot or vehicle localizes itself within the world especially for autonomous navigation and driving. The goal of this thesis is to improve place recognition performance for visual localization in changing environment. The approach is as follows: in off-line phase, geo-referenced images of each location are acquired, features are extracted and saved. While in the on-line phase, the vehicle localizes itself by identifying a previously-visited location through image or sequence retrieving. However, visual localization is challenging due to drastic appearance and illumination changes caused by weather conditions or seasonal changing. This thesis addres…
Reduced complexity models in the identification of dynamical networks: Links with sparsification problems
2009
In many applicative scenarios it is important to derive information about the topology and the internal connections of more dynamical systems interacting together. Examples can be found in fields as diverse as Economics, Neuroscience and Biochemistry. The paper deals with the problem of deriving a descriptive model of a network, collecting the node outputs as time series with no use of a priori insight on the topology. We cast the problem as the optimization of a cost function operating a trade-off between accuracy and complexity in the final model. We address the problem of reducing the complexity by fixing a certain degree of sparsity, and trying to find the solution that “better” satisfi…
DeepEva: A deep neural network architecture for assessing sentence complexity in Italian and English languages
2021
Abstract Automatic Text Complexity Evaluation (ATE) is a research field that aims at creating new methodologies to make autonomous the process of the text complexity evaluation, that is the study of the text-linguistic features (e.g., lexical, syntactical, morphological) to measure the grade of comprehensibility of a text. ATE can affect positively several different contexts such as Finance, Health, and Education. Moreover, it can support the research on Automatic Text Simplification (ATS), a research area that deals with the study of new methods for transforming a text by changing its lexicon and structure to meet specific reader needs. In this paper, we illustrate an ATE approach named De…
Deep learning strategies for automatic fault diagnosis in photovoltaic systems by thermographic images
2021
Abstract Losses of electricity production in photovoltaic systems are mainly caused by the presence of faults that affect the efficiency of the systems. The identification of any overheating in a photovoltaic module, through the thermographic non-destructive test, may be essential to maintain the correct functioning of the photovoltaic system quickly and cost-effectively, without interrupting its normal operation. This work proposes a system for the automatic classification of thermographic images using a convolutional neural network, developed via open-source libraries. To reduce image noise, various pre-processing strategies were evaluated, including normalization and homogenization of pi…
A hybrid observer for localization of mobile vehicles with asynchronous measurements
2019
The aim of this paper is the design of a hybrid nonlinear observer for mobile vehicles. The main problem is that position and velocity measurements are provided with a very low frequency, and the time between two consecutive measurements could be not constant, but it could vary randomly within a certain interval of time. For this reason the proposed observer has been contextualized in the hybrid systems framework. The convergence analysis of the estimation error has been carried out, and the sensitivity analysis has been performed in order to evaluate the bound of the estimation error when the measurements are biased and/or noisy. Simulation and experimental results, carried out on a mobile…
Multitemporal Mosaicing for Sentinel-3/FLEX Derived Level-2 Product Composites
2020
The increasing availability of remote sensing data raises important challenges in terms of operational data provision and spatial coverage for conducting global studies and analyses. In this regard, existing multitemporal mosaicing techniques are generally limited to producing spectral image composites without considering the particular features of higher-level biophysical and other derived products, such as those provided by the Sentinel-3 (S3) and Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) tandem missions. To relieve these limitations, this article proposes a novel multitemporal mosaicing algorithm specially designed for operational S3-derived products and also studies its applicability within the FLEX…
A novel noise figure and gain test set for microwave devices
2002
A new instrument for the measurement of noise and gain of microwave devices is presented. It differs from the commercial ones in the accomplishment of the gain measurement and is also useful for measuring mismatched devices such as transistors, The instrument is driven via HP-IB by a PC and a user-friendly virtual panel is designed to perform all the required operations. Also included is the possibility of removing the second-stage noise contribution and correcting various sources of error (source ENR variations, temperature variations, etc.). The test set provides a very good accuracy for both matched and mismatched devices, usually limited by source ENR accuracy and step attenuator repeat…
