Convergence Analysis of Distributed Set-Valued Information Systems
2016
This paper focuses on the convergence of information in distributed systems of agents communicating over a network. The information on which the convergence is sought is not rep- resented by real numbers, as often in the literature, rather by sets. The dynamics of the evolution of information across the net- work is accordingly described by set-valued iterative maps. While the study of convergence of set-valued iterative maps is highly complex in general, this paper focuses on Boolean maps, which are comprised of arbitrary combinations of unions, intersections, and complements of sets. For these important class of systems, we provide tools to study both global and local convergence. A distr…

Optimization of the Relay Selection Scheme in Cooperative Retransmission Networks
2011
Cooperative MAC protocol design has attracted much attention recently thanks to the development of relaying techniques. In single-relay C-ARQ, the relay selection scheme cannot work efficiently in a dense network, due to high collision probability among different contending relays. In this paper, the throughput performance impairment from the collision is analysed in a typical network scenario. Thereby, we propose an optimized relay selection scheme aiming at maximizing system throughput by reducing collision probability. The throughput performance enhancement by the proposed optimal relay selection scheme is verified by simulations.
On the performance of hybrid-ARQ with code combining over double rayleigh fading channels
2011
In this paper, we study the performance of hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) with code combining (CC) over double Rayleigh channels. This channel can be utilized to model the fading envelope of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channels. We derive analytical solutions for the characteristic quantities of double Rayleigh channels, such as the outage probability, the ergodic capacity, and the bit error probability (BEP). Moreover, we study the performance of HARQ with CC. Our analysis focuses on information theoretic aspects of HARQ with CC. closed-form analytical approximations are derived for the e-outage capacity, the average number of transmissions, and the average transmission rate of HARQ w…
Retinal vasculature segmentation and measurement framework for color fundus and SLO images
2020
Abstract The change in vascular geometry is an indicator of various health issues linked with vision and cardiovascular risk factors. Early detection and diagnosis of these changes can help patients to select an appropriate treatment option when the disease is in its primary phase. Automatic segmentation and quantification of these vessels would decrease the cost and eliminate inconsistency related to manual grading. However, automatic detection of the vessels is challenging in the presence of retinal pathologies and non-uniform illumination, two common occurrences in clinical settings. This paper presents a novel framework to address the issue of retinal blood vessel detection and width me…
Automatic multi-seed detection for MR breast image segmentation
2017
In this paper an automatic multi-seed detection method for magnetic resonance (MR) breast image segmentation is presented. The proposed method consists of three steps: (1) pre-processing step to locate three regions of interest (axillary and sternal regions); (2) processing step to detect maximum concavity points for each region of interest; (3) breast image segmentation step. Traditional manual segmentation methods require radiological expertise and they usually are very tiring and time-consuming. The approach is fast because the multi-seed detection is based on geometric properties of the ROI. When the maximum concavity points of the breast regions have been detected, region growing and m…
Innovative modelling techniques in computer vision
1996
Abstract The paper is concerned with two of main research activities currently carried on at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence lab of DIE. The first part deals with hybrid artificial vision models, intended to provide object recognition and classification capabilities to an autonomous intelligen system. In this framework, a system recovering 3-D shape information from grey-level images of a scene, building a geometric representation of the scene in terms of superquadrics at the geometric level, and reasoning about the scene at the symbolic level is described. In the second part, attention is focused on automatic indexing of image databases. JACOB, a prototypal system allowing…
Three-dimensional object recognition by Fourier transform profilometry
2008
An automatic method for three-dimensional (3-D) shape recognition is proposed. It combines the Fourier transform profilometry technique with a real-time recognition setup such as the joint transform correlator (JTC). A grating is projected onto the object surface resulting in a distorted grating pattern. Since this pattern carries information about the depth and the shape of the object, their comparison provides a method for recognizing 3-D objects in real time. A two-cycle JTC is used for this purpose. Experimental results demonstrate the theory and show the utility of the new proposed method.
Development of a High Granularity Photovoltaic Model That Considers Complex Nonuniform Shadow Conditions and Different Cell Temperatures
2012
In this paper is the development of a high granularity photovoltaic model that considers complex nonuniform shadow conditions and different cell temperatures. The model integrates the nonuniform shading characteristics such as different areas for each cell, different direct and indirect solar irradiations for each cell, and different temperatures. The area of the shadow on the PV module is found using image processing. The bond graph formalism facilitates the representation of the energy exchange between the different parts of the PV module. This complexity justifies the effort to develop a high-granularity tool. The proposed model is validated through experimental tests under shading condi…
