European response to issues in recycling car plastics

1999

Abstract This paper discusses the issue of recycling of plastics in the automobile industry which has gained importance due to the proposed European Commission regulation on End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) where the EC sets targets on the percent recyclablity or reusability of a car by the year 2015. This proposed regulation puts pressure on the car manufacturers to increase the recyclable and/or reusable components of their product. Plastic poses a critical challenge as on one hand it is necessary to meet the customer demands related to esthetics, light weight and the technological advantages, while on the other hand it is a hurdle in achieving a higher percent recyclability of the ELVs. A clo…

Using QSPS in Developing and Realization of a Production Line in Automotive Industry

2010

Using the QSPS (Quality System for the production software) for industrial projects and not only therefore, has led to accurate running of the production line from beginning of the SOP (Start of Production). This paper presents the application way of the QSPS at one of the strongest European automotive company. By using of this system several significant costs savings and quality improvement can be observed.
The content of this paper will show step by step how to use QSPS for the integration of a production line in the traceability system from a big company in automotive industry.
The production line involved contains 56 production equipments, which have to …

Quality Improvement Based on Big Data Analysis

2016

Big data analysis has become an important trend in computer science. Quality improvement is a constant in current industry trends. In this paper, we present an idea of quality improvement based on big data analysis with the aid of linked data and ontologies in order to implement it in the case of automotive parts production. We consider defective automotive products and try to find the best refurbishment solution for them considering their characteristics. Moreover, we propose to develop a recommender system that is able to give recommendations in order to prevent or to alleviate defects and to provide insights for possible causes that led to these defective parts. This study intends to hel…

Assessment of process stability and capability in a manufacturing organization: a case study

2021

Quality is considered asthe principal factor that determines the long-termsuccess or failure of any organization. Organizations perform quality control by monitoring process output using Statistical Quality Control, performed as part of the production process (Statistical Process Control, SPC) or as a final quality control check (Acceptance Sampling).SPC is a major quality management statistical tool and its instruments (control charts and capability analysis) are applied to virtually any type of organization (manufacturing, services or transactions - for example, those involving data, communications, software, or movement of materials). The aim of this paper is to present a case study, rea…

Incremental Forming Process for the Accomplishment of Automotive Details

2007

In the last decades the scenario of the industrial production is remarkably changed, since new market requirements have to be faced by the industries. The market, actually, more and more, asks for vary models and niches product. The necessity to intercept dynamically and to satisfy the demands for the market, driver of the innovation process, involves the necessity to reduce the Timeto- market introducing to new methodologies of engineering, like the 3D-prototyping, for the qualitative and structural analysis of the final component. For these reasons, at the beginning of the nineties, a new philosophy of sheet metal forming process begins to assert on the industrial scene, whose basic logic…

Comparison of problem solving tools in lean organizations

2017

As global market competition is getting fiercer, and companies are looking at ways to stay on top, more and more organizations are looking at Lean Manufacturing and lean tools to support them in achieving their goals. Especially within the automotive industry, lean practices are very well received. The speed at which the automotive industry is evolving, especially but not only, in countries like Romania, leads to the need to carefully analyze lean manufacturing concepts, examine them against local production conditions, and to develop and standardize them. One of the most important things to take into consideration here is the application of an adequate problem solving technique to avoid wa…

Assessing supply chain risks in the automotive industry through a modified MCDM-based FMECA

2020

Supply chains are complex networks that receive assiduous attention in the literature. Like any complex network, a supply chain is subject to a wide variety of risks that can result in significant economic losses and negative impacts in terms of image and prestige for companies. In circumstances of aggressive competition among companies, effective management of supply chain risks (SCRs) is crucial, and is currently a very active field of research. Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) has been recently extended to SCR identification and prioritization, aiming at reducing potential losses caused by lack of risk control. This article has a twofold objective. First, SCR assess…

Fuzzy cognitive maps for knowledge-oriented human risk management in industry

2021

This contribution proposes an integrated approach making use of Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) to organise in a flexibleway human knowledge about decision-making (DM) problems of interest in industry. By modelling human reasoning, FCMs allow to represent real phenomena on the basis of spontaneous human brainstorming on relations between pairs of relevant DM elements. Because of its characteristics, the use of FCMs can be effective to model DM problems such as human risk management, particularly critical in the industrial business sector. After identifying human risks in the existing literature, FCMs will be used to define relations among risks, which will be later prioritised by means of a mod…

THE SCOPE OF DUE DILIGENCE IN CROSS-BORDER ACQUISITIONS IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE

2015

Cross-border acquisitions play an important role in the corporate strategic development and international expansion. The paper summarizes the results of the dissertation, which intends to establish vital link between research and practice, deeply exploring the risk assessment methods and the scope of due diligence audit in the pre-acquisition phase. The central hypothesis of the comprehensive model stated that thorough due diligence in the pre-acquisition phase is necessary to make successful cross-border acquisition. The empirical evidence has been drawn on data sample of acquisitions made by automotive firms in cross-border acquisitions in the Central and Eastern Europe. The main results …

Energy and environmental benefits of circular economy strategies: The case study of reusing used batteries from electric vehicles

2019

Abstract According to recent literature and technical analyses, used batteries from electric vehicles can still be used, before the final treatment at the end-of-life, in stationary applications that are usually less stressing than the automotive ones. In this framework, a circular economy inspired pathway is emerging between the building and the transportation sector, generally called “second life” of batteries. Used batteries from electric vehicles can be re-used in residential buildings together with renewable electricity generation technologies to improve the matching between the highly variable electricity generation from renewables and the electricity demand in buildings. This study a…
