Implication of pyoverdines in the interactions of fluorescent pseudomonads with soil microflora and plant in the rhizosphere
2007
Soils are known to be oligotrophic environments whereas soil microflora is mostly heterotrophic in such way that microbial growth in soil is mainly limited by the scarce sources of readily available organic compounds (Wardle 1992). Therefore, in soils, microflora is mostly in stasis (fungistasis/bacteriostasis) (Lockwood 1977). In counterpart, plants are autotrophic organisms responsible for the primary production resulting from the photosynthesis. A significant part of photosynthetates are released from plant roots to the soil through a process called rhizodeposition. These products, i.e. the rhizodeposits, are made of exudates, lysates, mucilage, secretions and dead cell material, as well…
A novel process-based model of microbial growth: self-inhibition in Saccharomyces cerevisiae aerobic fed-batch cultures
2015
Microbial population dynamics in bioreactors depend on both nutrients availability and changes in the growth environment. Research is still ongoing on the optimization of bioreactor yields focusing on the increase of the maximum achievable cell density. A new process-based model is proposed to describe the aerobic growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cultured on glucose as carbon and energy source. The model considers the main metabolic routes of glucose assimilation (fermentation to ethanol and respiration) and the occurrence of inhibition due to the accumulation of both ethanol and other self-produced toxic compounds in the medium. Model simulations reproduced data from classic and new expe…
Enzymatically hydrolyzable protein and carbohydrate sedimentary pools as indicators of the trophic state of detritus sink system: a case study in a M…
2003
In order to classify the trophic state of 'detritus sink' systems, instead of the conventional indicators based on inorganic nutrient availability and algal biomass and productivity in the water column, we utilized new biochemical descriptors based on the amount of sedimentary organic carbon and nitrogen potentially available to heterotrophic nutrition. We investigated spatial and temporal changes in microphytobenthic biomass, organic matter biochemical composition and enzymatically hydrolyzable protein and carbohydrate pools along a N-S transect in the Marsala lagoon (Mediterranean Sea, Italy) at three stations characterized by different hydrodynamic conditions and organic matter content i…
Biokinetic Behaviour of Autochthonous Halophilic Biomass at Different Salinity: Comparison Between Activated Sludge and Granular Sludge Systems
2017
The main goal of this study was the evaluation of the impact of increasing salinity on halophilic biomass in forms of flocculent and granular sludge for the treatment of hypersaline fish-canning wastewater, focusing on the metabolic behavior of autotrophic biomass. For this purpose, two sequencing batch reactors, one with aerobic granular sludge (GSBR) and the other with flocculent activated sludge (SBR) were monitored. In both reactors, a halophilic biomass was cultivated from a real saline wastewater collected from a fish-canning industry. The salt concentration was stepwise increased (2 gNaCl L-1) from 30 gNaCl L-1 to 50 gNaCl L-1. Therefore, ammonia and nitrite uptake rates for granular…

Coelomocytes and post-traumatic response in the common sea star Asterias rubens.
2008
Coelomocytes are recognized as the main cellular component of the echinoderm immune system. They are the first line of defense and their number and type can vary dramatically during infections or following injury. Sea stars have been used as a model system to study the regeneration process after autotomy or predation. In the present study we examined the cellular and biochemical responses of coelomocytes from the European sea star Asterias rubens to traumatic stress using immunochemical and biochemical approaches. In terms of trauma and post-traumatic stress period, here we consider the experimental arm amputation and the repair phase involved in the first 24 hours post-amputation, which mi…
Autotransporta radītā atmosfēras piesārņojuma novērtējums autoceļa A7 Ķekavas posmā
2020
Bakalaura darbā “Autotransporta radītā atmosfēras piesārņojuma novērtējums autoceļa A7 Ķekavas posmā” novērtēts autotransporta radītais piesārņojums, analizēta plūsmas vecuma un tipoloģiskā struktūra. Plūsmas apjoma novērtējums pētījumu posma galējos punktos veikts izmantojot Latvijas Valsts ceļu stacionārā monitoringa datus, strukturālās komponentes, – pamatojoties uz Valsts Centrālās statistikas pārvaldes uzskaites datiem un CSDD informatīvajiem materiāliem. Automašīnu skaita manuālā uzskaite veikta epizodiski pētījuma posma iekšienē piecos monitoringa punktos no 2019. līdz 2020. gadam dažādās sezonās, dažādās nedēļas dienās un diennakts laikos. Transporta radītās emisijas atmosfērā aprēķ…
