Population dynamics of Antarctophthirus microchir (Anoplura: Echinophthiriidae) in pups from South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens, in Northern …

2009

We analysed population dynamics of the louse Antarctophthirus microchir in pups of the South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens, at the Punta León rookery (Argentina) over a period of 2 years. A total of 136 pups were aged and marked at the beginning of the lactation period ashore, then sampled for lice at different times within 30 days. Sampling was restricted to the chest and belly, two sites where lice were especially abundant. This concentration on ventral areas might protect lice from thermal stress in the austral summer. Infestation patterns in pups ≤3 days old suggested that the potential for transmission increased from first nymphs to adults. Population trends of each instar with …

Role of high-resolution ultrasound in guiding treatment of idiopathic plantar fasciitis with minimally invasive techiniques

2007

The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of peri-fascial oedema as a sonographic criterion for selecting the most appropriate treatment (ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection or ultrasound-guided extracorporeal shock wave therapy) of idiopathic plantar fasciitis (IPF).Sixty-four patients with a clinical diagnosis of unilateral refractory IPF, treated conservatively for at least 8 weeks, were studied with high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS). Pain intensity was evaluated with a visual analogue scale (VAS). HRUS was used to confirm IPF and identify the presence of peri-fascial oedema. Patients with an HRUS diagnosis of IPF were grouped according to the presence (A) or absence (B)…

External hernia of the supravesical fossa: Rare or simply misidentified?

2017

Abstract Background External hernias of the supravesical fossa are considered rare, perhaps wrongly. Highlighting clinical and anatomical features could be useful for correct, preoperative diagnosis, thus avoiding the risk of complications such as incarceration. The study aims to demonstrate that the incidence of external protrusions of the supravesical fossa is higher that supposed. Probably, being mistaken for direct hernias, these hernia types are misidentified and not included in current classifications. This issue deserves attention due to the elevated risk of incarceration related to its distinctive structure. Material and methods 249 consecutive open anterior inguinal hernia procedur…

Is there a relationship between the degree of preoperative motility impairment or the muscle thickness and the outcome of strabismus surgery in patie…

2005

There is considerable controversy regarding the performance of strabismus surgery in patients with Graves' orbitopathy (GO). The spectrum of recommendations extends from variable dose-effect correlations for these procedures (Esser, 1994; Mourits et al., 1990; Nguyen et al., 2002) to individualized approaches such as passive intraoperative motility testing and postoperative adjustment of sutures (Lueder et al., 1992; Nguyen et al., 2002), and to local anesthesia for intraoperative assessment of active motility (Kalpadakis et al., 2004). Furthermore, prior decompression surgery is known to contribute to an unpredictable outcome (Eckstein and Esser, 2003; Esser, 1994). We retrospectively anal…

[Clinical practice and adherence to the diagnosis and treatment of NMIBC guidelines: a report of a recognition based clinical cases study]

2014

For non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, a disease with a considerable epidemiological and socio-economic impact, the introduction of the Guidelines has always evoked as a tool for the resolution of long-standing disputes in terms of diagnosis and therapy. Check the degree of routine clinical practice adherence to the Recommendations is for this disease, more than for other uro-oncology pathology, an urgent need felt by the urological community. To assess the level of Guidelines adherence's, and study issues related to the paths of diagnosis and treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, and identifying the processes actually implemented in daily clinical practice, a series of case st…

Er:YAG laser treatment in supportive periodontal therapy.

2012

To assess clinical and microbiological outcomes of an Er:YAG laser in comparison with sonic debridement in the treatment of persistent periodontal pockets in a prospective randomized controlled multicentre study design.A total of 78 patients in supportive periodontal therapy with two residual pockets were included, 58 were available for the whole follow-up period. Root surfaces were instrumented either with a sonic scaler (Sonicflex(®) 2003 L) or with an Er:YAG laser (KEY Laser(®) 3). Clinical attachment levels (CAL), Probing depths (PD), Plaque control record (PCR) and Bleeding on probing (BOP) were assessed at baseline, 13 and 26 weeks after treatment. In addition, microbiological analysi…

Shoulder function after extracorporal shock wave therapy for calcific tendinitis.

1998

We report a controlled, prospective study that explored the effect of extracorporal shock waves of low- versus high-energy density in patients with chronic shoulder pain and calcific tendinitis. We assigned at random 100 patients who had had calcific tendinitis for more than 12 months to 2 groups to receive shock wave therapy either of a low- or high-energy density. Group 1 received 1500 impulses of 0.06 mJ/mm2, whereas group 2 received 1500 impulses of 0.28 mJ/mm2. Unlike group 1, in which the shock wave application could be performed without local anesthesia, all patients in group 2 required brachial plexus anesthesia. The patients were reviewed at 6 and 24 weeks. Partial or complete disi…

Portulaca oleracea reduces triglyceridemia, cholesterolemia, and improves lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase activity in rats fed enriched-cholest…

2014

Abstract Purpose The effects of Portulaca oleracea ( Po ) lyophilized aqueous extract were determined on the serum high-density lipoproteins (HDL 2 and HDL 3 ) amounts and composition, as well as on lecithin: cholesterol acyltansferase (LCAT) activity. Methods Male Wistar rats ( n = 12) were fed on 1% cholesterol-enriched diet for 10 days. After this phase, hypercholesterolemic rats (HC) were divided into two groups fed the same diet supplemented or not with Portulaca oleracea ( Po -HC) (0.5%) for four weeks. Results Serum total cholesterol (TC) and triacylglycerols (TG), and liver TG values were respectively 1.6-, 1.8-, and 1.6-fold lower in Po -HC than in HC group. Cholesterol concentrat…

Ocular ductions after rectus muscle recession and resection in thyroid eye disease.

2019

Background: Recession and resection of rectus muscles for correction of strabismus in Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is relatively unpopular as it is assumed to enhance the restriction of ocular ductions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare ductions of recession only and recess/resect procedures. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 119 patients who underwent strabismus surgery for TED from 1991 to 2015, of which 102 were included in the present study. Forty-six interventions were performed on horizontal, 56 on vertical rectus muscles; comprising 41 recess/resect surgeries for horizontal deviations, and 7 in patients with vertical strabismus. Ocular ductions and ali…

A Nomogram to Characterize the Severity of Detrusor Overactivity during the Ice Water Test: Description of the Method and Proof of Concept

2017

Aims: To develop a nomogram with severity categories for detrusor overactivity (DO). Methods: By conducting ice water tests (IWT) in 55 patients with Parkinson’s disease, we identified criteria to describe characteristics of the detrusor pressure curves: (1) a gradient of Δpdet over Δt at the maximum detrusor pressure and (2) the area under the curve. In a nomogram, 10 severity categories of DO were established: 1 and 2 were assigned to group A (mild), 3 and 4 to group B (moderate) and 5–10 to group C (severe). Results: In the nomogram, negative IWT (20) appea…
