The effect of plants on microbes, water quality, and fish performance in an aquaponic system

Aquaponics is a way to utilize the nutrient-rich effluents from recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) by combining hydroponics, i.e. soilless plant farming, with RAS. The plants in aquaponics can be grown as a single or mixed plant species together with fish. In this dissertation, I investigated if plant growth is affected in aquaponics compared to hydroponics and if the plants affected the growth and microbial communities in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) or water quality in aquaponics compared to RAS. Abstract Enzymatic browning is a main problem encountered in minimal processing and further storage of leafy vegetables, leading to shorter shelf-life of products. Changes in the two oxidative activities, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD), as well as in total phenolic content, colour parameters and antioxidant capacity (assayed with ORAC method), were monitored during 10 days of storage at 4 °C of minimally processed baby Romaine lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L. cv. Otto Neugebauer (1899–1990) was, for many, an enigmatic personality. Trained as a mathematician in Graz, Munich, and Gottingen, he had not yet completed his doctoral research when in 1924 Harald Bohr, brother of the famous physicist, invited him to Copenhagen to work together on Bohr’s new theory of almost periodic functions. Quite by chance, Bohr asked Neugebauer to write a review of T. Eric Peet’s recently published edition of the Rhind Papyrus (Neugebauer 1925). Syncytial mutations of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) strains ANG, ANG path, HFEM, tsB5 and HSZP cause extensive cell fusion and were mapped to the cytoplasmic domain of glycoprotein B (gB), within the syn 3 locus. These strains are so far the only ones which show the phenotype ‘fusion from without’ (FFWO): 60 min after infection with high m.o.i., cells in a tissue culture are fused without transcription and translation of the viral genome.
