Fast extension but little exhumation: the Vari detachment in the Cyclades, Greece

Markedly different cooling histories for the hanging- and footwall of the Vari detachment on Syros and Tinos islands, Greece, are revealed by zircon and apatite fission-track data. The Vari/Akrotiri unit in the hangingwall cooled slowly at rates of 5–15 °C Myr−1 since Late Cretaceous times. Samples from the Cycladic blueschist unit in the footwall of the detachment on Tinos Island have a mean zircon fission-track age of 10.0±1.0 Ma, which together with a published mean apatite fission-track age of 9.4±0.5 Ma indicates rapid cooling at rates of at least ∼60 °C Myr−1. Extropy: Complementary Dual of Entropy

This article provides a completion to theories of information based on entropy, resolving a longstanding question in its axiomatization as proposed by Shannon and pursued by Jaynes. We show that Shannon's entropy function has a complementary dual function which we call "extropy." The entropy and the extropy of a binary distribution are identical. However, the measure bifurcates into a pair of distinct measures for any quantity that is not merely an event indicator. As with entropy, the maximum extropy distribution is also the uniform distribution, and both measures are invariant with respect to permutations of their mass functions. We detected binding of insecticidal crystal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis in one susceptible strain and six resistant strains of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, from Hawaii. Immunohistochemical tests with tissue sections from larval midguts showed specific binding of CryIA(a), CryIA(b), and CryIA(c) to brush border membranes. CryIE, which is not toxic to P. xylostella, did not bind to midgut tissues. Larvae from one of the resistant strains ingested extremely high concentrations of a commercial formulation containing the three CryIA proteins without suffering midgut cell damage or mortality. ABSTRACT A field-collected colony of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella , had 31-fold resistance to Cry1C protoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis . After 24 generations of selection with Cry1C protoxin and transgenic broccoli expressing a Cry1C protein, the resistance that developed was high enough that neonates of the resistant strain could complete their entire life cycle on transgenic broccoli expressing high levels of Cry1C. After 26 generations of selection, the resistance ratios of this strain to Cry1C protoxin were 12,400- and 63,100-fold, respectively, for the neonates and second instars by a leaf dip assay. ImageRover is a search-by-image-content navigation tool for the World Wide Web (WWW). To gather images expediently, the image collection subsystem utilizes a distributed fleet of WWW robots running on different computers. The image robots gather information about the images they find, computing the appropriate image decompositions and indices, and store this extracted information in vector form for searches based on image content.
