Assaying waterborne psychoactive drugs by the response to naturalistic predator cues in the stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus)

2020

Abstract Ecotoxicological effects of psychiatric drugs and drug metabolites released by the human population are of increasing environmental concern. In this study we evaluate behavioral responses to visual predator cues in wild caught three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) after exposure to water-born citalopram, a widely prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor with antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. Fish were exposed to ecological relevant concentrations of citalopram (0.15 or 1.5 μg L−1) for 10 or 20 days. After drug exposure, individual fish were moved to a test arena where they were exposed to two naturalistic visual predator cues; a shadow from beneath, which …

Biomagnification of organohalogens in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from its main prey species in three areas of the Baltic Sea

2012

Abstract Factors affecting the biomagnification of organohalogens in Baltic salmon from sprat, herring and three-spined stickleback were assessed in three feeding areas. Second sea-year salmon contained (in fresh weight of whole fish) 79–250 ng g− 1 polychlorinated biphenyls (ΣPCB), 0.9–2.7 pg g− 1 dibenzo-p-dioxins (ΣPCDD), 8–19 pg g− 1 dibenzofurans (ΣPCDF), 96–246 pg g− 1 coplanar PCBs, 2.4–3.6 ng g− 1 polybrominated diphenylethers (ΣPBDE), and 39–136 ng g− 1 Σindicator PCB6. The EU limits for WHO toxic equivalent concentrations in fish feed were already exceeded in one-year-old sprat and herring and were exceeded many-fold in older age groups. The differences in the biomagnification rat…

Characterization of Hardwood Soda-AQ Lignins Precipitated from Black Liquor through Selective Acidification

2016

In the development of integrated biorefinery process alternatives to produce value-added by-products, various black liquors from sulfur-free pulping processes offer potential feedstocks for recovering their main chemical constituents, lignin and aliphatic carboxylic acids. In this study, lignin fractions were obtained from silver birch (Betula pendula) soda-anthraquinone black liquor by carbonation (pH to about 8.5) or by acidification (pH to about 2) with H2SO4 after carbonation or directly. These fractions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ultraviolet (UV), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED XRF), and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) spectroscopy. In a…

Analysis of the TK enzyme complex induced by HSV types 1 and 2 by means of isoelectric focusing and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

1982

Recently we have described that the Herpes simplex virus (HSV)-induced thymidine kinase (TK) induces AMP- and ADP-dThd-5'-phosphotransferase activities. We now demonstrate the heterogeneity of the described activities in isoelectric focusing experiments and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A TK--mutant of HSV type 1 fails to induce these activities. The activities of the type 1 enzyme complex was neutralized by an anti-HSV-serum. The TK-enzyme complex expressed in LTK--cells transformed to a TK+-phenotype by sheared HSV-1 DNA was compared with the wild type TK complex in isoelectric focusing experiments. Additionally we demonstrate that the HSV type 1 enzyme complex has thymidylate kinas…

Is diversity of leisure-time sport activities associated with low back and neck–shoulder region pain? A Finnish twin cohort study

2019

This study investigates cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between the diversity of leisure-time sport activities and the frequencies of low back pain (LBP) and neck-shoulder region pain (NSP) in twins, including a cross-sectional within-pair design to adjust for potential familial confounding. Finnish twins born in 1975–79 (FinnTwin16 study) reported participation in leisure-time sport activities at the mean ages of 17 (1992–96) (n = 5096, 54% females) and 34 years (2010−12) (n = 3731, 57% females). Diversity assessed as the number of sport activities was categorized as 1, 2, 3, 4, and ≥ 5, excluding inactive individuals. The frequencies of LBP (n = 3201) and NSP (n = 3207), rep…

Epidural spinal abscesses.

1990

Fifteen cases of peridural empyemas are reported. 12 patients reported with motor dysfunction of the lower extremities and pain radiating from the spine. In one case, localized pain of the spine was discovered and in two cases there were no signs of spinal or radiating pain. Treatment in all cases was laminectomy and systemic antibiotic administration. Microbiological analysis showed staphylococcus aureus in 11 cases. 9 patients recovered with no neurological defects, two had major improvement of the paresis, and one died. Three patients with paraplegia recovered from the primary infection.

The dark side of curvature

2009

Geometrical tests such as the combination of the Hubble parameter H(z) and the angular diameter distance d(A)(z) can, in principle, break the degeneracy between the dark energy equation of state parameter w(z), and the spatial curvature Omega(k) in a direct, model-independent way. In practice, constraints on these quantities achievable from realistic experiments, such as those to be provided by Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) galaxy surveys in combination with CMB data, can resolve the cosmic confusion between the dark energy equation of state parameter and curvature only statistically and within a parameterized model for w(z). Combining measurements of both H(z) and d(A)(z) up to suffici…

Mechanical properties and microstructural study of homogeneous and heterogeneous laser welds in α, β,and α + β titanium alloys

2018

International audience; Heterogeneous welding has been investigated for three different couples of titanium alloys: α/α + β, α/β,andα + β/β. Plates of 100 × 60 mm and 1.6 or 1.8 mm thick were welded with a Yb:YAG laser. Tensile tests show that the resistance of the heterogeneous welded specimens was generally controlled by those of the weakest material except for the α + β/β where the ultimate tensile strength was approximately equal to the average value of both materials. In every case, the elongation of the welded sample was found to be smaller than that of the base metals. The rupture generally took place outside the weld metal and was found to be most of the time located in the alloy ha…

Structure and composition heterogeneity of a FeAl alloy prepared by one-step synthesis and consolidation processing and their influence on grain size…

2006

Abstract This paper aims to characterize a bulk dense FeAl (47 at.%) alloy synthesized and consolidated by one-step current-activated pressure-assisted processing of nanocrystalline elemental powders. The end-product was analyzed using a combination of scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopies (TEM), electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) as well as electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Special attention was paid to verify the grain size (32–89 nm) previously determined by X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis. It has been found that this material displays equiaxed grains (0.8–4 μm in size) and contains limited structural defects like subgrains and dislocations. The EPMA r…

An equilibrium point regularization for the Chen system

2006

This paper addresses the control of the chaotic Chen system via a feedback technique. We first present a nonlinear feedback controller which drives the trajectories of the Chen system to a given point for any initial conditions. Then, we design a linear feedback controller which still assures the global stability of the Chen system. We moreover achieve the tracking of a reference signal. Numerical simulations are provided to show the effectiveness of the developed controllers.
