A new preprocessing and control board for the phase 2 electronics of AGATA experiment
2016
The electronics of AGATA HPGe segmented gamma ray detector faces a new challenge in the search of a bigger integration and cost reduction for the phase 2 of the experiment going beyond 45 crystals. This opportunity can be used to introduce a new architecture based on commercial standards while keeping backward compatibility with current electronics. In this sense, new FPGA devices and fast Ethernet links can be used to ease the preprocessing and control task and allowing for processor farms to distribute the processing load. At the same time, modularity should be a key feature of the design in the aim to make it upgradable in time and technology. This paper presents the design of a new prep…
MECDAS/spl minus/a distributed data acquisition system for experiments at MAMI
1994
For coincidence experiments with the three-spectrometer setup at MAMI an experiment control and data acquisition system has been built and was put successfully into final operation in 1992. MECDAS is designed as a distributed system using communication via Ethernet and optical links. At the front end, VMEbus systems are used for real time purposes and direct hardware access via CAMAC, Fastbus or VMEbus. RISC workstations running UNIX are used for monitoring, data archiving and online and offline analysis of the experiment. MECDAS consists of several fixed programs and libraries, but large parts of readout and analysis can be configured by the user. Experiment specific configuration files ar…
Insecticidal Genetically Modified Crops and Insect Resistance Management (IRM)
2008
Economically important crops, such as maize and cotton, have been transformed with genes encoding insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to confer them protection against the most important insect pests. Of the 114 million hectares globally planted with GM crops in 2007, over one third are insect-resistant Bt crops, and the area keeps increasing every year. The potential for insects to evolve resistance to GM insecticidal plants is considered to be one of the main threats to this technology, since resistance to Bt sprayable products has been demonstrated. Insect resistance management plans for this new class of pesticides are encouraged and became mandatory in the USA. Of th…
The Role of Feedback on Learning: Evidence through Ex-Gaussian Components
2015
Abstract In the performance of any task if a subject does not understand the instructions given they will hardly be able to fulfil the requested goals. The aim of this work was to evaluate the role of feedback through a stroop task for University students. Two experiments were conducted where participants had to perform, into a counterbalanced design, stroop blocks with and without feedback. The classical ANOVA and a fit of the reaction times (RT) into an ex-Gaussian distribution function were carried out. RTs were much lower in feedback blocks than controls. The differences did not reach the statistical significance, however, the parameters often related in the literature to attention in a…
An artistic approach to neurofeedback for emotion regulation
2019
AbstractNeurofeedback has been shown to be a promising tool for learning to regulate one’s own emotions in healthy populations and in neuropsychiatric disorders. While it has been suggested that neurofeedback performance improves when sensory feedback is related to the pathology under consideration, it is still difficult to represent in real time a proper feedback representative of our emotional state. Since emotion is a central part of people’s dealings with artworks, we have initiated a collaboration between neuroscientists and artists to develop a visual representation of emotions that can be used in neurofeedback experiences. As a result of this collaboration, emotions were represented …
Entity Recommendation for Everyday Digital Tasks
2021
| openaire: EC/H2020/826266/EU//CO-ADAPT Recommender systems can support everyday digital tasks by retrieving and recommending useful information contextually. This is becoming increasingly relevant in services and operating systems. Previous research often focuses on specific recommendation tasks with data captured from interactions with an individual application. The quality of recommendations is also often evaluated addressing only computational measures of accuracy, without investigating the usefulness of recommendations in realistic tasks. The aim of this work is to synthesize the research in this area through a novel approach by (1) demonstrating comprehensive digital activity monitor…
Enabling Backoff for SCM Wake-Up Radio: Protocol and Modeling
2017
In sub-carrier modulation (SCM) wake-up radio (WuR) enabled wireless sensor networks, a node can initiate data transmission at any instant of time. In this letter, we propose to activate a backoff procedure before sending wake-up calls (WuCs) in order to avoid potential collisions among WuCs. Consequently, no backoff is needed for the main radio after a WuC is received. A discrete-time Markov chain model is developed to evaluate the performance. Numerical results on network throughput, energy efficiency, average delay, and collision probability reveal the benefits of enabling backoff for SCM-WuRs, especially under heavy traffic loads or saturated traffic conditions.
Search for ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles with the Pierre Auger Observatory
2016
We present a search for ultra-relativistic magnetic monopoles with the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such particles, possibly a relic of phase transitions in the early universe, would deposit a large amount of energy along their path through the atmosphere, comparable to that of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). The air shower profile of a magnetic monopole can be effectively distinguished by the fluorescence detector from that of standard UHECRs. No candidate was found in the data collected between 2004 and 2012, with an expected background of less than 0.1 event from UHECRs. The corresponding 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits on the flux of ultra-relativistic magnetic monopoles ra…
