Mode of inheritance and stability of resistance toBacillus thuringiensis varkurstaki in a diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) population from Mala…

2000

Genetic inheritance of resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki (BTK) was examined in a diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) population collected from the Melaka region of Malaysia. A BTK-selected sub-population (BTK-SEL) which was more than 100-fold resistant to BTK compared with a susceptible (ROTH) population of P xylostella was used with standard reciprocal crosses and back-crosses between ROTH and BTK-SEL. Logit regression analysis of F 1 reciprocal crosses indicated that BTK resistance was inherited as an incompletely recessive autosomal trait and controlled by a single locus. In contrast, other studies have shown that resistance to Cry1Ac is inherited as an incompletely do…

Inheritance of resistance to aBacillus thuringiensistoxin in a field population of diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella)

1995

Inheritance of resistance to the Bacillus thuringiensis Berl. CryIA(b) crystal protein was studied in Plutella xylostella L. (diamondback moth). A field population 50-fold more resistant to CryIA(b) than a control susceptible strain was used. Dose-mortality curves of the resistant population, the susceptible strain and the F 1 from the two reciprocal crosses were compared. Resistance transmission to the F 1 was dependent on the sex of the resistant progenitor. Sex ratio of the survivors to high doses of CryIA(b) in the F 1 of the two reciprocal crosses did not corroborate the preliminary hypothesis of resistance being due to a recessive sex-linked allele. Since, in a previous work, the loss…

Evolution of the Mayo Kebbi region as revealed by zircon dating: An early (ca. 740Ma) Pan-African magmatic arc in southwestern Chad

2006

Abstract The Mayo Kebbi region in SW Chad is part of the NNE-SSW trending Neoproterozoic Central African Fold Belt (CAFB) and is made up of three calc-alkaline granitoid suites emplaced into a metavolcanic–metasedimentary sequence. The first suite is represented by mafic to intermediate rocks (gabbro-diorite and metadiorite) emplaced between 737 and 723 Ma during early Pan-African convergence. The second consists of the Mayo Kebbi batholith and includes tonalites, trondhjemites and granodiorites, emplaced during several magmatic pulses between 665 and 640 Ma. The third suite includes porphyritic granodiorite and hypersthene monzodiorite dated at ca. 570 Ma. The Mayo Kebbi domain extends sou…

Environmental Gamma Radiation Measurements on the Island of Pantelleria

1992

The population exposure to those living on the island of Pantelleria, Italy, was estimated by measuring the natural gamma background. Gamma spectra of natural rocks and measurements of absorbed dose in air were taken. A correlation was found between the mean gamma exposure rate and the mean values of natural radionuclide concentrations in the investigated rocks.

On backflow associated with oceanic and continental subduction

2021

SUMMARY A popular idea is that accretion of sediment at a subduction zone commonly leads to the formation of a subduction channel, which is envisioned as a narrow zone located above a subducting plate and filled with vigorously circulating accreted sediment and exotic blocks. The circulation can be viewed as a forced convection, with downward flow in the lower part of the channel due to entrainment by the subducting plate, and a ‘backflow’ in the upper part of the channel. The backflow is often cited as an explanation for the exhumation of high-pressure/low-temperature metamorphic rocks from depths of 30 to 50 km. Previous analyses of this problem have mainly focused on the restricted case …

Pliocene tourmaline rhyolite dykes from Ikaria Island in the Aegean back-arc region: geodynamic implications

2009

Very rare rhyolite dykes cross-cutting a Miocene I-type biotite-granite were discovered on Ikaria Island in the Aegean back-arc region. Their intrusion postdates exhumation of the granite to brittle crust at about 6.0-3.6 Ma; hence a Pliocene age is inferred. Petrological, geochemical and isotopic arguments indicate an origin through melting of crustal lithologies (tourmaline greywackes/semipelites) with no detectable contribution from asthenospheric sources. Strontium isotope ratios are relatively low unlike values for sediments entering the Hellenic trench but similar to those for certain Miocene Cycladic I-type granites and low-Rb Permo-Carboniferous Cycladic basement acid orthogneisses.…

Fall incidence in frail older women after individualized visual feedback-based balance training.

2003

Background: The knowledge concerning balance training actually lowering fall rates among frail older persons is limited. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a 4-week individualized visual feedback-based balance training on the fall incidence during 1-year follow-up among frail older women living in residential care. Methods: Twenty-seven older women from 2 residential care homes were randomized into exercise (n = 20) and control (n = 7) groups. Balance measurements were carried out before and after a 4-week training period and falls were monitored by monthly diaries for 1 year. An interview about fear of fal…

La hospitalización domiciliaria: antecedentes, situación actual y perspectivas

2001

Multimorbidity and perceived stress: a population-based cross-sectional study among older adults across six low- and middle-income countries

2018

BACKGROUND:\ud Stress in chronic conditions or multimorbidity (≥2 chronic conditions) has been reported to affect clinical outcomes but there are no studies on the association between stress and chronic conditions/multimorbidity among older adults in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thus, we investigated this association among adults aged ≥50 years across six LMICs.\ud \ud METHODS:\ud A cross-sectional analysis using data from the World Health Organization's Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Russia, South Africa) was conducted. A perceived stress score [range 0 (lowest stress) -100 (highest stress)] was computed based on two questions from the Pe…

Changes in Psychosocial Factors and Physical Activity Among Finnish Working-Age Men in the Adventures of Joe Finn Campaign

2018

This study evaluated changes in psychosocial factors and self-reported physical activity (PA) among the sample of Finnish men who underwent the fitness tests during the national health campaign. Another aim was to examine whether the fitness test feedback was a meaningful experience for PA change. Baseline data were collected in 2011 by fitness test and questionnaire. Men who had low/moderate fitness along with overweight ( n = 361) were recruited to the postcampaign study in 2014. Data were analyzed with nonparametric tests, logistic regression analysis, and content analysis. The postcampaign survey was completed by 102 men. Positive PA change was associated with high goals, planning skil…
