Fitness costs of increased cataract frequency and cumulative radiation dose in natural mammalian populations from Chernobyl

2015

AbstractA cataract is a clouding of the lens that reduces light transmission to the retina and it decreases the visual acuity of the bearer. The prevalence of cataracts in natural populations of mammals and their potential ecological significance, is poorly known. Cataracts have been reported to arise from high levels of oxidative stress and a major cause of oxidative stress is ionizing radiation. We investigated whether elevated frequencies of cataracts are found in eyes of bank voles Myodes glareolus collected from natural populations in areas with varying levels of background radiation in Chernobyl. We found high frequencies of cataracts in voles collected from different areas in Chernob…

VITOM® 3D in Arterio-Venous Fistulas: Single Centre Preliminary Surgical Experience

2021

Background: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the vascular access of choice for hemodialysis patients. A correct microsurgical vascular anastomoses is essential to the optimal care of patients. Loupes can help surgeons perform such procedures, but often cause neck or back pain and fatigue. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate whether a video telescopic operating microscope (VITOM®; Karl Storz Endoscopy GmbH, Tuttlingen, Germany) could be used as a substitute for loupes to create microsurgical vascular anastomoses. Methods: We evaluated microsurgical anastomoses with VITOM® in 10 patients (6 male, 4 female) from January 2019 to December 2019. The created anastomoses were 7 side-to-side, 2 side-to-…

Effectiveness of postoperative home-exercise compared with usual care on kinesiophobia and physical activity in spondylolisthesis:A randomized contro…

2017

Objective: To study the effectiveness of a 12-month exercise therapy on kinesiophobia and physical activity in patients with spondylolisthesis after lumbar spine fusion. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Subjects: Patients (n = 98) with spondylolisthesis who had undergone lumbar spine fusion. Methods: All patients (mean age 59 years) had received lumbar spine fusion surgery and identical postoperative instructions. Three months postoperatively, they were randomized into an exercise group (n = 48) or usual care group (n = 50). The exercise group received 12-month progressive home-based training with regular booster sessions, and the usual care group a single session of physiotherapy instr…

Is a model of stratified exercise therapy by physical therapists in primary care feasible in patients with knee osteoarthritis? : a mixed methods stu…

2020

OBJECTIVES: To explore the feasibility of a newly developed model of stratified exercise therapy in primary care for patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA).DESIGN: Mixed method design (process, outcome and qualitative evaluation).SETTING: Six physical therapy practices in primary care around Amsterdam.PARTICIPANTS: Fifty eligible patients with knee OA, visiting one of the participating physical therapists (PTs).INTERVENTION: Patients were allocated to a subgroup based on a simple stratification tool and received subgroup-specific, protocolized, 4-month, exercise therapy.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Feasibility of this model of stratified exercise therapy was explored by multiple process parameter…

Rehabilitees perspective on goal setting in rehabilitation : a phenomenological approach

2018

Purpose: Setting meaningful goals for the rehabilitation process after acute illness is essential for rehabilitees recovery. The aim of this study was to understand the meanings of the goal setting situation with professionals from rehabilitees point of view. - Method: We included 20 acute stroke and back pain rehabilitees (mean age 66 y) who set goals with a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team. Data was collected by interviewing the rehabilitees after the goal setting situations. A qualitative analysis from a phenomenological perspective using Spiegelberg’s seven-phase meaning analysis was performed to reveal meanings. - Results: The five meanings were identified as: (i) “trust in the re…

Frequency of dicentrics and contamination levels in Ukrainian children and adolescents from areas near Chernobyl 20 years after the nuclear plant acc…

2013

International audience; Purpose To survey the possible presence of chromosomal damage and internal contamination in a group of Ukrainian children and adolescents, 20 years after the Chernobyl accident at the Nuclear Power Plant. Materials and methods Cytogenetical procedures were performed according to dicentric assay in 55 Ukrainian children and adolescents (29 boys and 26 girls), living near Chernobyl. In addition, a whole body detector and urinalysis were used to detect internal contamination. Results 36 dicentrics were found in a total of 53,477 metaphases scored in these children, which reflected a frequency of dicentrics below the background level. On the other hand, internal contamin…

Effects of different strength training frequencies on maximum strength, body composition and functional capacity in healthy older individuals

2017

There is controversy in the literature regarding the dose-response relationship of strength training in healthy older participants. The present study determined training frequency effects on maximum strength, muscle mass and functional capacity over 6 months following an initial 3-month preparatory strength training period. One-hundred and six 64–75 year old volunteers were randomly assigned to one of four groups; performing strength training one (EX1), two (EX2), or three (EX3) times per week and a non-training control (CON) group. Whole-body strength training was performed using 2–5 sets and 4–12 repetitions per exercise and 7–9 exercises per session. Before and after the intervention, ma…

Quantitative analysis of modified functional muscle–bone unit and back muscle density in patients with lumbar vertebral fracture in Chinese elderly m…

2018

Objectives: Bone mineral density (BMD) is associated with muscle mass and quality, but little research has been done on functional muscle–bone unit and back muscle density in patients with lumbar vertebral fracture. This study used the “modified functional muscle–bone unit” concept and measured back muscle density to investigate muscle–bone interaction difference between the fracture and control group. Methods: This was a case–control study. A total of 52 elderly male patients (mean age 75 years) with lumbar vertebral fracture (cases) and 52 control healthy subjects were enrolled. Cross-sectional area (CSA) and density of paravertebral muscle were measured in quantitative computed tomograph…

Self-Relevance Appraisal Influences Facial Reactions to Emotional Body Expressions

2013

International audience; People display facial reactions when exposed to others' emotional expressions, but exactly what mechanism mediates these facial reactions remains a debated issue. In this study, we manipulated two critical perceptual features that contribute to determining the significance of others' emotional expressions: the direction of attention (toward or away from the observer) and the intensity of the emotional display. Electromyographic activity over the corrugator muscle was recorded while participants observed videos of neutral to angry body expressions. Self-directed bodies induced greater corrugator activity than other-directed bodies; additionally corrugator activity was…

Use of a real-Time training software (Laerdal QCPR®) compared to instructor-based feedback for high-quality chest compressions acquisition in seconda…

2016

High-quality chest compressions are pivotal to improve survival from cardiac arrest. Basic life support training of school students is an international priority. The aim of this trial was to assess the effectiveness of a real-time training software (Laerdal QCPR®) compared to a standard instructor-based feedback for chest compressions acquisition in secondary school students. After an interactive frontal lesson about basic life support and high quality chest compressions, 144 students were randomized to two types of chest compressions training: 1) using Laerdal QCPR® (QCPR group– 72 students) for real-time feedback during chest compressions with the guide of an instructor who considered sof…
