Occurrences of hybridization between the rare, endangered Sicilian endemic, Calendula maritima, and other congeners in the wild have been suspected by several authors, but never demonstrated. In San Cusumano (Trapani), one of the only three Sicilian mainland populations, C. maritima occurs in close proximity to the more common congener C. suffruticosa subsp. fulgida, and individuals morphologically intermediate between the two taxa have been observed. Numerical Taxonomy of Pseudomonads Isolated from Water, Sediment and Eels

Summary A numerical taxonomic study was performed on 129 pseudomonad isolates from aquatic environments. 67 out of 98 field strains were isolated from water and sediment samples from Albufera lake, a hypereutrophic lake near Valencia, and 31 strains came from an eel hatchery. 10 clusters were formed at 84% similarity level when the Sokal-Michener similarity coefficient was used. Five clusters were designated as Pseudomonas putida (16 strains), P. fluorescens biotype I (9 strains), P. pseudoalcaligenes (11 strains), P. stutzen (4 strains) and Shewanella putrefaciens (3 strains). Abstract Connectivity indices are the topological descriptors that are able to predict different chemical and biological properties of the organic compounds. Recently, our research group has demonstrated their usefulness in selecting new cytostatic compounds, all of them showing antibacterial activity. Aims: Colony morphology variants of fish pathogenic Flavobacterium columnare were studied to clarify the role of colony morphology change in the virulence of the bacterium. A small heat shock gene of Lactobacillus plantarum strain WCFS1 was deleted using a Cre-lox based system. Compared to the wild type, the ∆hsp 18.55 mutant strain displayed a similar growth rate when cultivated either under optimal temperature or under different stress conditions such as heat, low pH and salt stress. However, a longer lag phase was observed when the ∆hsp 18.55 mutant strain was cultivated under short intense heat stress (50 °C). This suggests that the hsp 18.55 gene of L. plantarum may be involved in recovery of L. plantarum stressed cells in the early stage of high temperature stress. Aims: A numerical taxonomic study of halophilic Vibrio isolated from healthy and brown ring disease (BRD) affected manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum), harvested from the Atlantic coast of south-western Spain, was performed. Methods and Results: Characterization of 123 presumptive Vibrio spp. was carried out using 94 phenotypic tests. Simple matching and Jaccard similarity coefficients were used for numerical analysis. Cluster analysis by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averages yielded 15 phena defined at 0.81 similarity. Background The aim of the present study was to compare in vitro the antimicrobial activity of different root canal sealers against Enterococcus faecalis, prior and subsequent to setting. Material and methods Agar diffusion test (ADT) was used for evaluating the antibacterial activity of non-set sealer while the direct contact test (DCT) was used for after setting. Results ADT: Except for TotalFill BC Sealer all the others sealers tested showed antibacterial activity.
