Soil microbes represent an important source of biologically active compounds. These molecules present original and unexpected structure and are selective inhibitors of their molecular targets. At Biosearch Italia, discovery of new bioactive molecules is mostly carried out through the exploitation of a proprietary strain collection of over 50000 strains, mostly unusual genera of actinomycetes and uncommon filamentous fungi. A critical element in a drug discovery based on microbial extracts is the isolation of unexploited groups of microorganisms that are at the same time good producers of secondary metabolites. The impact of antibiotic resistance on the efficacy of three 7-day regimens againstHelicobacter pylori

Background: Antibiotic resistance affects the success of anti-Helicobacter pylori therapies and varies greatly from country to country. Aim: To compare the efficacy of three short-term triple regimens in relation to H. pylori primary resistance in our region. Methods: We enrolled 210 H. pylori-positive dyspeptic patients for this randomized, open, parallel-group study. Head-to-head comparison of 1-week triple regimens combining ranitidine or omeprazole with two antibiotics to eradicate Helicobacter pylori

Background : Triple therapies containing omeprazole and ranitidine have been shown to be equivalent in eradicating H. pylori infection, but have been assessed either separately or head-to-head, only in small trials. Ureterosciatic Hernia A Rare Cause of Pyonephrosis

A female patient presented as an emergency case with pyonephrosis and septicemia as a result of ureterosciatic hernia. Septicemia was treated successfully by immediate percutaneous nephrostomy tubing. After complete disappearance of symptoms, the hernia was closed operatively. Topographic anatomy of ureterosciatic hernia is presented.

We have tested whether tetracyclines (TETs) are able to protect mice from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced shock, a cytokine-mediated inflammatory reaction. Mice, injected with a single dose of tetracycline base (TETb; 1.5, 10 and 20 mg/kg of body weight) or doxycycline (DOXY; 1.5 mg/kg), were significantly protected from a lethal intraperitoneal injection of LPS (500 micrograms per mouse). TETs acted in early events triggered in response to LSP; in fact, they were no longer significantly protective if injected more than 1 h after the injection of endotoxin. Efficacy of NaOCl/H2O2irrigation and GaAlAs laser in decontamination of root canals in vitro

Background and Objectives To investigate the bactericidal effect of an 809 nm semiconductor laser alone, and in combination with NaOCl/H2O2 irrigation in root canals in vitro. Study Design/Materials and Methods A total of 72 human single-rooted teeth extracted for periodontal reasons were included. The crowns were removed, the roots shortened to a length of 12 mm, and the canals enlarged up to an apical size of #50 file. The drugs available for inflammatory bowel disease are aminosalicylates, antibiotics, steroids, immunosuppressors and biologics. The effectiveness of these drugs has been evaluated in many randomized clinical trials, mainly versus placebo. Epidemiology of pneumococcal disease in children in Germany

UNLABELLED Recently published and as yet unpublished data allow a reasonable estimate of the annual burden of pneumococcal disease in Germany. At least 277,000 episodes of otitis media and at least 2,000 episodes of sinusitis occur in children under the age of 5 y. Pneumococcal meningitis was found in 200 children under the age of 16 y; the estimate for all age groups ranges from 450 to 1100 cases. Of approximately 150,000 cases of ambulatory pneumococcal pneumonia, at least 63,000-105,000 patients are hospitalized each year.
