Daptomycin-induced eosinophilic pneumonia: Are there any risk factors?

2020

Abstract Objectives Daptomycin is a widely used antibiotic. Rhabdomyolysis related to daptomycin is one of the adverse effects of treatment, justifying the need for regular monitoring of muscle enzymes throughout treatment. Daptomycin may also lead to eosinophilic pneumonia. However, risk factors for this adverse reaction have not been identified and do not permit targeting of at-risk populations who could benefit from appropriate monitoring. Patients and methods Literature was reviewed for cases of daptomycin-induced eosinophilic pneumonia (DIEP), which that were compared to cases of patients without this adverse effect. Results Fifty patients with DIEP and 54 controls were identified. Age…

Efficacy and safety of micafungin for treatment of serious Candida infections in patients with or without malignant disease

2011

The aim of this study was to evaluate micafungin efficacy for treatment of invasive candidiasis/candidaemia in patients with cancer. Modified intent-to-treat populations were analysed from two trials: one, in adults and children with confirmed Candida infection, compared micafungin (adults 100 mg day(-1); children 2 mg kg(-1) day(-1)) with liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB 3 mg kg(-1) day(-1)); and the other, in adults only, compared micafungin (100 or 150 mg day(-1)) with caspofungin (50 mg day(-1); 70 mg loading dose). Primary efficacy endpoint in both trials was treatment success, defined as both clinical and mycological response at end of therapy. In the micafungin/L-AmB trial, 183/489 pa…

Early Cessation of a Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE) Outbreak in a Hematology-Oncology Department after Implementation of an Enhanced Infectio…

2004

Abstract Introduction: Worldwide, the incidence of nosocomial outbreaks of VRE has increased especially in high-risk patients such as hematology-oncology patients. Outbreaks reported so far, required a minimum of three months to be controlled. Such outbreaks have a serious impact on daily care and treatment of the patients and hospital economics. Patients and Methods: We describe the outcome of a VRE-outbreak in a department with 48 beds (fourteen 2-patient rooms, and 20 single-patient rooms) including allogeneic BMT. Epidemiological evaluation was initiated after two patients in the department for the first time had a blood stream infection (BSI) with VRE within one week. Two goals had to …

Viridans streptococcal infective endocarditis associated with fixed orthodontic appliance managed surgically by mitral valve plasty

2018

Abstract Rationale: Streptococcus viridans, a heterogeneous group of alpha-hemolytic streptococci, is part of the normal flora of the mouth, usually responsible for dental caries (Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis), and pericoronitis, as well as for subacute infective endocarditis. They are responsible for 40-60% of the endocarditis cases occurring on the normal valves, especially in male patients and over 45 years of age. A change in the bacterial flora of the oral cavity is taking part after orthodontic fixed appliances are introduced into the oral cavity, change that is associated with an increased concentration of the acidogenic bacteria. Bacteraemia is the consequence of or…

Predictors of visually induced motion sickness in women

2019

Abstract Background Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is commonly experienced when visual motion information is in conflict with motion information provided by the vestibular system and/or tactile and kinesthetic senses. According to some studies, women experience higher levels of VIMS than men, whereas other studies do not find this to be the case. Hypothesis This study investigated whether gender differences can be attributed to changes in VIMS-susceptibility due to the menstrual cycle and perceived menstrual pain. We hypothesized that higher perceived menstrual pain correlates positively with VIMS susceptibility. Methods We measured the influence of estimated concentrations of four…

A conservative treatment for chronic obstructive sialoadenitis by intraductal instillation of mucolytic, steroids and antibiotic solution

2021

Abstract Purposes Reporting our experience in treating chronic obstructive sialadenitis with a protocol consisting of sialoendoscopy and intraductal instillation of antibiotics, steroids and n-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) solution. Methods Prospective study of patients with chronic obstructive sialadenitis with no apparent lithiasic obstructions, with recurrent non-lithiasic sialoadenitis and patients with lithiasic sialoadenitis not solved with sialoendoscopy. In all cases, a sialoendoscopy was performed. All the patients affected by lithiasic sialoadenitis where the chronic inflammation was resolved with sialoendoscopy were excluded from the study. The mid-term follow-up was performed at 12 mont…

Treatment of cervicofacial actinomycosis: a report of 19 cases and review of literature

2013

Objectives: Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative granulomatous infection caused by the Actinomyces genus. Orocervicofacial actinomycosis is the most common form of the disease, seen in up to 55% of cases. All forms of actinomycosis are treated with high doses of intravenous penicillin G over two to six weeks, followed by oral penicillin V. Large studies on cervicofacial actinomycosis are lacking. Therefore proper guidelines for treatment and treatment duration are difficult to establish. The aim of this study is to establish effective treatment and treatment duration for orocervicofacial actinomycosis. Study design: A Pubmed and Embase search was performed with the focus on treatment and …
