Numerical Taxonomy of Aerobic, Gram-negative Bacteria associated with Oysters and Surrounding Seawater of the Mediterranean Coast

Abstract A numerical taxonomic study was performed on 245 strains of heterotrophic, aerobic, marine bacteria, plus 26 reference strains. The isolates were obtained from oysters and seawater sampled monthly over one year, by direct plating on Marine Agar. The strains were characterised by 93 morphological, biochemical, physiological and nutritional tests. Clustering yielded 46 phena at 0.60 S level (S J coefficient). Some could be identified as species of Alteromonas, Shewanella, Deleya, Flavobacterium, Oceanospirillum, Pseudomonas and marine Agrobacterium -like organisms, others were unidentified groups. Several phena seem to correspond to as yet undescribed taxa.

Numerical Taxonomy of Vibrionaceae Isolated from Oysters and Seawater Along an Annual Cycle

Summary A numerical taxonomic study on Gram negative heterotrophic facultative anaerobic bacteria isolated from marine samples (oysters and seawater of Western Mediterranean Sea) was performed. Three hundred sixty eight strains, including reference strains of most species of the Vibrionaceae , were characterized (96 tests per strain). Cluster analysis of similarity matrices obtained with S SM and S J coefficients was performed and S J -based tree and 0.75 S level selected for definition of phena. Black box of phage–bacterium interactions : exploring alternative phage infection strategies

The canonical lytic–lysogenic binary has been challenged in recent years, as more evidence has emerged on alternative bacteriophage infection strategies. These infection modes are little studied, and yet they appear to be more abundant and ubiquitous in nature than previously recognized, and can play a significant role in the ecology and evolution of their bacterial hosts. ABSTRACT Flavobacteria and their phages were isolated from Finnish freshwaters and fish farms. Emphasis was placed on finding phages infecting the fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare for use as phage therapy agents. The host ranges of the flavobacterial phages varied, phages infecting F. columnare being more host specific than the other phages.

Many opportunistic pathogens can alternate between inside- and outside-host environments during their life cycle. The opportunistic fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare is an inhabitant of the natural microbial community and causes significant yearly losses in aquaculture worldwide. Crystal structure of bacteriophage fr capsids at 3.5 A resolution.

The structure of recombinant capsids of the bacterial virus fr has been determined by X-ray crystallography at 3.5 A resolution. The capsids were produced by expressing the fr coat protein in Escherichia coli, the natural host of the virus, and are probably essentially identical to the protein shell of the native virus. The structure was determined using molecular replacement with the protein shell of the related MS2 virus, and refined to a crystallographic R-factor of 0.228. A comparison of the protein shells of the viruses shows that they are very similar, and indicates that they may have a similar regulation of the assembly of the quasi-symmetrical protein shell.

Biological nutrient removal performances and kinetics of autochthonous marine biomass in forms of activated sludge and aerobic granular sludge were investigated under different salinity and sludge retention time (SRT).
