A New Calibration Method for the Accurate Determination of Ethylene Content in Ethylene-Propylene Copolymers by CRYSTEX-IR

2012

Summary: CRYSTEX is a fully automated instrument for the determination of Xylene Solubles in polypropylene and ethylene-propylene copolymers, providing an excellent correlation with gravimetric methods. The instrument can be equipped with a dual band infrared (IR) detector to quantify the ethylene weight percentage (C2%) in the amorphous fraction, and in the whole polymer sample. In this work, a new approach based on multiple linear regression (MLR) models is presented, which makes use of two independent IR absorbance signals acquired simultaneously by the detector. A compromise model to predict directly C2% is proposed, which balances good accuracy and reduced experimental effort. MLR mode…

Impacts of wood extraction on soil: assessing rutting and soil compaction caused by skidding and forwarding by means of traditional and innovative me…

2021

AbstractIntensive forestry operations may cause soil compaction, plastic soil disturbances and rutting, which are responsible for undesirable effects on soils, vegetation and water bodies. Despite the numerous studies aimed to identify the main factors affecting soil damages, it still remains unclear whether wood extraction methods and driving direction (uphill or downhill) may affect the impacts of forest machines. This research analyses soil compaction and soil penetration resistance as well as rutting from forwarding and skidding using the same farm tractor in up- and downhill wood extraction. Rutting was estimated by 3D soil reconstruction derived by portable laser scanning (PLS) and cl…

A proteomic approach to studying plant response to crenate broomrape (Orobanche crenata) in pea (Pisum sativum)

2004

Abstract Crenate broomrape ( Orobanche crenata ) is a parasitic plant that threatens legume production in Mediterranean areas. Pea ( Pisum sativum ) is severely affected, and only moderate levels of genetic resistance have so far been identified. In the present work we selected the most resistant accession available (Ps 624) and compared it with a susceptible (Messire) cultivar. Experiments were performed by using pot and Petri dish bioassays, showing little differences in the percentage of broomrape seed germination induced by both genotypes, but a significant hamper in the number of successfully installed tubercles and their developmental stage in the Ps 624 compared to Messire. The prote…

Identification of Processes Associated with Different Iron Sites in the Prussian Blue Structure by in Situ Electrochemical, Gravimetric, and Spectros…

2012

The physicochemical properties of Prussian blue films are strongly dependent on the ratio Fe3+/Fe2+ in the structure. This ratio can be modulated by electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, and some information about physicochemical properties can be extracted from in situ auxiliary techniques. Prussian blue films have been studied by the use of in situ vis–NIR spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance, and electrochemical techniques (cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). By cyclic voltammetry + absorbance derivative curves + mass derivative curves, it has been possible to identify at least three different processes during the reduction of Prussian bl…

Innovative Combination of Three Alternating Current Relaxation Techniques: Electrical Charge, Mass, and Color Impedance Spectroscopy. Part II: Prussi…

2009

The simultaneous recording of three impedance functions (electrochemical impedance, color, and mass impedance) allows the role of different species to be distinguished easily during electrochemical processes in conducting and electrochromic films. Herein, this technique has been applied to the study of the Prussian blue films at several potentials between the blue form (Prussian blue) and the colorless form (Everitt’s salt). At these potentials, these electrochemical reactions take place by means of exchange of different ions. Thus, the exchange of potassium cations is related to the changes of absorbance at 690 nm, whereas the exchange of protons does not introduce color changes at this wa…

Identification of electroactive sites in Prussian Yellow films

2013

Abstract Prussian Blue films were electrogenerated on the surface of the transparent ITO electrodes. The electrochemical oxidation to the Prussian Yellow form was investigated by means of in situ voltammetry and vis–NIR spectroscopic techniques. Changes of the whole spectra between 400 and 950 nm were analyzed and three characteristic wavelengths were selected to in situ follow the electrochemical changes of the films. Voltammetric peaks and absorbance derivative curves at these three wavelengths were deconvoluted and were interpreted such as the overlapping of different electrochemical processes. The correlation between these overlapped processes has allowed proposing three different elect…

Effects of economic variables on NPLs depending on the economic cycle. Empirical Economics

2019

Late payments are a major problem for Spanish banks. This paper studies as determinants of loan delinquency: unemployment, interest rates, inflation, housing prices, leverage, bad debt coverage and solvency, which were the main problems facing the Spanish economy between 2004 and 2015, and also examines these determinants in periods of growth and recession. The results show that the price of housing, bad debt coverage, interest rates and solvency are the variables with the greatest impact on NPLs. Furthermore, differences exist in the behaviour of variables during periods of growth compared with periods of recession. Inertia of the dependent variable has also been detected.

Virtual reality in eating disorders

2003

Virtual Reality (VR) is widely used as a therapeutic tool in the field of neuropsychology and also in the treatment of anxiety disorders. In contrast, VR is much less well-known in the area of the eating disorders. The objective of this paper is to draw attention to possible applications of this technology in the treatment of eating disorders and describe pilot work in the area of body image disturbance and binge eating using VR technology. The treatment of the body image disturbances in eating disorders and clinically significant change

2014

Body image disturbance is a significant maintenance and prog-nosis factor in eating disorders. Hence, existing eating disorder treatments can benefit from direct intervention in patients’ body image. This paper in-cludes a controlled study comparing cognitive behavioural treatment for eating disorders with and without a component for body image treatment using virtual reality techniques. The objective of this work was to check if both types of treatment produced a change clinically significant at the end of the treatment and the follow-up to the year, in body image, eating disor-ders and general psychopathology. Thirty-four participants diagnosed with eating disorders were treated and compa…

A Therapist’s Different Style of Intervention in Two Group Treatments

2004

In this paper we compare interventions of the same group analyst in two different groups - a traditional slow-open group of six out-patients with Eating Disorders diagnosis (all female; age: 16-26) and a time-limited, group of eight outpatients (different in age and sex) with organic vision disturbances. Our aim was to see if the same group therapist adopts different therapeutic interpretative interventions in the two groups, depending on the aims of each group and the different patients’ diagnosis. The sessions were recorded, transcribed and coded by the Code of Analysis of the Therapeutic Field Style (SCAT). In the traditional group, the therapist’s intervention style is focused more on …
