Differential Expression Analysis by RNA-Seq Reveals Perturbations in the Platelet mRNA Transcriptome Triggered by Pathogen Reduction Systems

2015

Platelet concentrates (PCs) are prepared at blood banks for transfusion to patients in certain clinical conditions associated with a low platelet count. To prevent transfusion-transmitted infections via PCs, different pathogen reduction (PR) systems have been developed that inactivate the nucleic acids of contaminating pathogens by chemical cross-linking, a mechanism that may also affect platelets' nucleic acids. We previously reported that treatment of stored platelets with the PR system Intercept significantly reduced the level of half of the microRNAs that were monitored, induced platelet activation and compromised the platelet response to physiological agonists. Using genome-wide differ…

Eiropas investīciju fondu sniegums

2016

Darbs sastāv no tris daļām: 1. Pirmā daļa pēta ES banku sistēmas attīstību, to grūtības nodrošinot atbilstošu finansē…

Accounting meets economics: towards an ‘accounting view’ of money.

2018

Social Space for Self-Organising: An Exploratory Study of Timebanks in Finland and in the UK

2018

The article examines the challenges to self-organisation and upscaling of alternative economies from the viewpoint of defending and negotiating social space. Timebanks in Finland and the UK are presented as examples, analysing the difference of defending such social space in the contexts of a traditional welfare state (in the case of Finland) and an austerity-driven government with a “Big Society” ideology (in the case of UK). Both systems of government present different kinds of pressures on timebanks, pushing them to a given ontological categories and to action in accordance with pre-defined political goals. This difference, along with timebank reactions and the question of prospects of o…

Mediterranean bioconstructions along the Italian coast

2018

Marine bioconstructions are biodiversity-rich, three-dimensional biogenic structures, regulating key ecological functions of benthic ecosystems worldwide. Tropical coral reefs are outstanding for their beauty, diversity and complexity, but analogous types of bioconstructions are also present in temperate seas. The main bioconstructions in the Mediterranean Sea are represented by coralligenous formations, vermetid reefs, deep-sea cold-water corals, Lithophyllum byssoides trottoirs, coral banks formed by the shallow-water corals Cladocora caespitosa or Astroides calycularis, and sabellariid or serpulid worm reefs. Bioconstructions change the morphological and chemicophysical features of prima…

Continuous auditing in public sector and central banks: a framework to tackle implementation challenges

2022

Purpose This paper aims to analyse the implementation challenges faced by internal audit departments of public sector organisations and central banks when implementing continuous auditing (CA) systems. CA aims to monitor internal control systems and risk levels on a continuous basis to support the audit process. This study identifies the implementation challenges of CA systems and proposes adequate countermeasures. Design/methodology/approach This study employs the design science information system research and the design science research process methodologies to ensure the rigor of this analysis. These research methodologies are adopted to tackle identified organisational problems and pro…

Corruption in banks: A bibliometric review and agenda

2020

Abstract This paper is a bibliometric review of 819 articles, between 1969 and 2019, on corruption in banks. We identified six research streams: (1) the determinants of banks’ lending corruption; (2) the impact of corruption on banks’ lending and operational risk; (3) the impact of bank corruption on firms; (4) the impact of political connections on bank corruption; (5) the impact of corporate governance and regulations on bank corruption; and (6) the manipulation of the inter-bank offered rate. We recommend an anti-corruption architecture system and an extension in theoretical frameworks related to corruption in banks. We propose 20 future research questions.

The impact of criminality on the riskiness of cooperative credit banks in Italy: a macro regional approach

2017

In Italy, Cooperative Credit Banks (CCBs), unlike large banks, despite the economic downturn, have continued to extend credit to customers, but at the cost of a higher incidence of bad credit. This increased credit risk of local banks has been caused by management policy choices, such as preferring to modify the conditions applicable to credit supply and to engage firms in long-term credit relationships rather than initiating credit recovery procedures. The originality of this empirical analysis lies in its demonstration of the effects of environmental factors related to the spread of crime and lower economic well-being, higher unemployment and poverty in families on the credit market in So…
