Towards Hybrid Aesthetics
1998
In order to avoid limiting hybridity to sterile ‘racial’ considerations, it needs to be placed firmly in its cultural context. Cultures and civilisations have often been taken as synonyms. For E.B. Tylor in Primitive Culture, words such as ‘culture’ or ‘civilization’ refer to the body of sciences, arts, beliefs, moral principles, laws, customs, in short all the habits and faculties acquired by human beings as part of their social life. Tylor draws a distinction between three stages in the evolution of societies: the savage, the barbarian and the civilised. He thus reintroduces a hierarchy between ‘civilisation’, which is reserved for the highest point on his evolutionary scale, and ‘culture…
L'estudi de la pirateria a través dels avisaments costaners. Replegament cristià i setge islàmic a la València de la transició a la modernitat
2020
We can consider the period between 1480 and 1520 as che most spectacular of the Discovery Era. The area round València and all the land of the Mediterranean side of the península were then subject to pirate pressure. So, in the general framework of piracy in Valencia, the analysis of the coastal observations is thus one of the sources that most can help us to clear up the main points of this important social and economic phenomenon, during a very concrete lapse of time such as this one. If we add perspicacity, we will be able to analyze the trajectory of Christian's (from France or Genova) and Muslim's (barbarian, Turkish, etc. pirates) war. On peut considérer l’époque comprise entre 1480 e…
“Il barbaro è vinto”. D’Annunzio contra Wagner . Dal sinfonismo tedesco alla musica del silenzio nei romanzi di Gabriele D’Annunzio
2012
“You won the barbarian”. D’annunzio contra Wagner. Symphonic from German to music of silence in the novels of Gabriele D’Annunzio Summary This study aims to demonstrate how music has a relevance in the prose of Gabriele D’Annunzio. It is not just an aesthetic embellishment, sound sweetening syntax, melodic accompaniment to the events described. It suggests, rather, as a real source of inspiration, texture composition that motivates and supports events and characters. By analyzing the novels most markedly musical, symbol of opposing cultural trends and conceptual changes of direction, is possible to see as a controversial figure of Wagner, whose music inspires and influences the novel Il t…

“Who’s Afraid of the Dark?”: The Ironic Self-Stereotype of the Ethnic Other in Finnish Rap Music
2017
Drawing on recent sociolinguistic work on globalization and superdiversity, this chapter explores the multisemiotic and ironic construction of the self-stereotype of the ethnic Other in a Finnish rap music video. Because Finland and Finnish hip-hop are still ethnically relatively homogeneous, people of migrant background, such as rap artist Musta Barbaari (Black Barbarian), need to negotiate their belonging in various ways. In the video, he deliberately constructs himself as the ethnicized and sexualized Other to highlight prejudice, discrimination and racism. In doing this, he voices societal critique and dissatisfaction – and speaks for multiculturalism and tolerance in (super)diversifyin…
“At the Western Palace”: The Dehumanization of Whiteness, Americanness, and Chinese-Americanness in Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior
2021
The dehumanization of whiteness in Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior (1976) inheres in the overarching ghosthood metaphor. While first generation Chinese American immigrants in The Woman Warrior attribute the power of transforming people into ghosts to the United States of America as a country, the questioning of a person’s humanity by calling them a “ghost” is not reserved for white people alone. Chinese American immigrants also run the risk of losing their humanity and becoming ghosts if they renounce their relatives and their heritage. The husband of the first-person narrator’s Chinese aunt, Moon Orchid, is an example of a Chinese American man, who turns into a ghost on account of…
