Synthesis and Characterization of Lead-Free (1-x)(K0.5Na0.5)Nb1-ySbyO3-xBaTiO3

2011

In this study lead-free ceramics with a formula (1-x)(K0.5Na0.5)Nb1-ySbyO3-xBaTiO3 have been synthesized and studied. XRD studies showed that all compositions have perovskite structure with monoclinic or tetragonal cell depending on substitution level. KNN ceramics with BaTiO3 have more homogeneous structure and increased density in comparison with pure KNN or antimony substituted KNN. Dielectric measurements revealed diffuse phase transition.

Relaxor Properties of Barium-Strontium Niobate Ceramics

2011

Dielectric properties of Sr0.75Ba0.25Nb2O6 (SBN-75) ceramics in the range of low and infra-low frequencies are reported. The values of ϵ′ and, in particular of ϵ″, in ceramics are found to be much smaller compared with SBN-75 single crystals below the temperature (Тm) of the ϵ′(T) maximum a sharp increase of the values of dielectric parameters observed above Тm being also different from their thermal behaviour in single crystals. The broadening of phase transition and dependence of the response on sample history are similar to the features observed in other relaxor materials.

Trace element data covering 96-7 ka BP from stalagmite CM (Santo Tomas Cave, Cuba)

2020

We present a new speleothem trace element and stable isotope record, which extends previous paleoclimate evidence from Cuban speleothems to the last 96 ka. Stable isotope samples were micromilled at a resolution of 0.10-0.33mm, and measured using an IRMS equipped with a Gasbench. Line scans of Element/Calcium ratios of the speleothem were measured by laser ablation ICPMS and were reduced to the resolution of the stable isotope records.

Classification of Primula sect. Auricula (Primulaceae) based on two molecular data sets (ITS, AFLPs), morphology and geographical distribution

2004

On the basis of the study of c. 1100 herbarium specimens, field observations and molecular (ITS, AFLPs) evidence, Primula sect. Auricula is classified into two subsections, 25 species and six subspecies. Primula auricula L. ssp. widmerae (Pax) L. B. Zhang stat. nov., P. auricula Linn. ssp. tatriaca L. B. Zhang ssp. nov., and P. latifolia Lapeyr. ssp. cynoglossifolia (Widmer) L. B. Zhang stat. nov. are newly described or combined; P. auricula s.l. is divided into two species: P. auricula Linn. and P. balbisii Lehm., representing the northern and the southern populations of P. auricula s.l. resolved in the molecular study, respectively; P. cottia Widmer and P. balbisii Lehm. are recovered fro…

Demonstration of Single-Barium-Ion Sensitivity for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay Using Single-Molecule Fluorescence Imaging

2018

[EN] A new method to tag the barium daughter in the double-beta decay of Xe-136 is reported. Using the technique of single molecule fluorescent imaging (SMFI), individual barium dication (Ba++) resolution at a transparent scanning surface is demonstrated. A single-step photobleach confirms the single ion interpretation. Individual ions are localized with superresolution (similar to 2 nm), and detected with a statistical significance of 12.9 sigma over backgrounds. This lays the foundation for a new and potentially background-free neutrinoless double-beta decay technology, based on SMFI coupled to high pressure xenon gas time projection chambers.

An abundance analysis of the symbiotic star CH Cyg

2005

The photospheric abundances for the cool component of the symbiotic star CH Cyg were calculated for the first time using high-resolution near-infrared spectra and the method of of standard LTE analysis and atmospheric models. The iron abundance for CH Cyg was found to be solar, [Fe/H] = 0.0+/-0.19. The atmospheric parameters and metallicity for CH Cyg are found to be approximately equal to those for nearby field M7 giants. The calculated [C/H] = -0.15, [N/H] = +0.16, [O/H] = -0.07, and the isotopic ratios of 12C/13C and 16O/17O are close to the mean values for single M giants that have experienced the first dredge-up. A reasonable explanation for the absence of barium star-like chemical pec…

On metal-deficient barium stars and their link with yellow symbiotic stars

2005

This paper addresses the question of why metal-deficient barium stars are not yellow symbiotic stars (YSyS). Samples of (suspected) metal-deficient barium (mdBa) stars and YSyS have been collected from the literature, and their properties reviewed. It appears in particular that the barium nature of the suspected mdBa stars needs to be ascertained by detailed abundance analyses. Abundances are therefore derived for two of them, HD 139409 and HD 148897, which reveal that HD 148897 should not be considered a barium star. HD 139409 is a mild barium star, with overabundances observed only for elements belonging to the first s-process peak (Y and Zr). The evidence for binarity among mdBa stars is…

Hyperfine structure and isotope shift of the neutron-rich barium isotopes139?146Ba and148Ba

1988

The hyperfme structure and isotope shift in the 6s 2 S 1/2−6p 2P3/2 line of Ba II (455.4 nm) have been measured by collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy for the neutron-rich isotopes139–146Ba and148Ba. Nuclear moments and mean square charge radii of these isotopes have been recalculated. The isotope shift of the isotope148Ba (T1/2=0.64 s) could be studied for the first time, yieldingδ〈r2〉138,148=1.245(3) fm2.

An abundance analysis of the single-lined spectroscopic binaries with barium stars-like orbital elements

1997

Detailed abundance analyses have been car- ried out for 17 single-lined binaries (giants and dwarfs) with orbital elements and mass functions similar to those of barium stars, using high-dispersion CCD spectra and model atmospheres. All these binary systems contain an unseen low-mass component, presumably, a white dwarf. A mild enhancement (+0:1 0:25 dex) of the averaged s- process elements abundances has been found only for two stars. The heavy-element overabundances in these stars are much less marked than those of the classical barium stars having similar orbital periods. We have concluded that the existence of a white dwarf (WD) companion in binary systems with barium star like characte…

High-resolution positron lifetime spectrometer with BaF2 scintillators

1987

In this communication we report on a design of a fast coincidence positron lifetime spectrometer, which is based on single crystal barium fluoride (BaF2) scintillators. A good time resolution (190ps, FWHM), combined with a high efficiency, has been obtained in the normal experimental set-up (with cathode earthed in the photo multipliers). The pile-up effect is observed to disturbe the measured lifetimes in the 180 degree geometry due to the high detection efficiency of the BaF2 scintillator.
