Chiral extrapolation and finite-volume dependence of the hyperon vector couplings

2014

The hyperon vector form factors at zero momentum transfer, $f_1(0)$, play an important role in a precise determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{us}$. Recent studies based on lattice chromodynamics (LQCD) simulations and covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory yield contradicting results. In this work, we study chiral extrapolation of and finite-volume corrections to the latest $n_f=2+1$ LQCD simulations. Our results show that finite-volume corrections are relatively small and can be safely ignored at the present LQCD setup of $m_\pi L=4.6$ but chiral extrapolation needs to be performed more carefully. Nevertheless, the discrepancy remains and further studies a…

The lowest-lying baryon masses in covariant SU(3)-flavor chiral perturbation theory

2010

We present an analysis of the baryon-octet and -decuplet masses using covariant SU(3)-flavor chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order. Besides the description of the physical masses we address the problem of the lattice QCD extrapolation. Using the PACS-CS Collaboration data we show that a good description of the lattice points can be achieved at next-to-leading order with the covariant loop amplitudes and phenomenologically determined values for the meson-baryon couplings. Moreover, the extrapolation to the physical point up to this order is found to be better than the linear one given at leading-order by the Gell-Mann-Okubo approach. The importance that a reliable combinatio…

The large $$N_{c}$$ limit of QCD on the lattice

2021

We review recent progress in the study of the large $N_c$ limit of gauge theories from lattice simulations. The focus is not only the planar limit but also the size of ${\mathcal O}(N_c^{-1})$ corrections for values of $N_c\gtrsim 3$. Some concrete examples of the topics we include are tests of large-$N_c$ factorization, the topological susceptibility, the glueball, meson and baryon spectra, the chiral dependence of masses and decay constants, and weak matrix elements related to the $\Delta I=1/2$ rule in kaon decays.

The rho NN coupling with direct coupling and loops

2002

Starting from a gauge formalism of $\rho$ mesons, pions and baryons we evaluate the $\rho$ coupling to the nucleon, including the direct coupling provided by the Lagrangians, plus contributions from loops with the virtual pion cloud. We find a contribution to the magnetic $\rho$ coupling to the nucleon from pionic loops of the same size as the direct coupling, which is, however, still small compared to the empirical values. This finding goes in line with chiral formulations of the strong interaction of mesons at low energies where, unlike the scalar mesons which are mostly built of a pion (kaon) cloud, the $\rho$ meson stands as a genuine QCD state with intrinsic properties not tied to thos…

Nucleon electromagnetic form factors in two-flavor QCD

2015

We present results for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors, including the momentum transfer dependence and derived quantities (charge radii and magnetic moment). The analysis is performed using O(a) improved Wilson fermions in Nf=2 QCD measured on the CLS ensembles. Particular focus is placed on a systematic evaluation of the influence of excited states in three-point correlation functions, which lead to a biased evaluation, if not accounted for correctly. We argue that the use of summed operator insertions and fit ans\"atze including excited states allow us to suppress and control this effect. We employ a novel method to perform joint chiral and continuum extrapolations, by fitting th…

The half-skyrmion phase in a chiral-quark model

2013

The Chiral Dilaton Model, where baryons arise as non-topological solitons built from the interaction of quarks and chiral mesons, shows in the high density low temperature regime a two phase scenario in the nuclear matter phase diagram. Dense soliton matter described by the Wigner–Seitz approximation generates a periodic potential in terms of the sigma and pion fields that leads to the formation of a band structure. The analysis up to three times nuclear matter density shows that soliton matter undergoes two separate phase transitions: a delocalization of the baryon number density leading to B=1/2B=1/2 structures, as in skyrmion matter, at moderate densities, and quark deconfinement at larg…

Scale evolution of nuclear parton distributions

1998

Using the NMC and E665 nuclear structure function ratios $F_2^A/F_2^D$ and $F_2^A/F_2^{C}$ from deep inelastic lepton-nucleus collisions, and the E772 Drell--Yan dilepton cross sections from proton-nucleus collisions, and incorporating baryon number and momentum sum rules, we determine nuclear parton distributions at an initial scale $Q_0^2$. With these distributions, we study QCD scale evolution of nuclear parton densities. The emphasis is on small values of $x$, especially on scale dependence of nuclear shadowing. As the main result, we show that a consistent picture can be obtained within the leading twist DGLAP evolution, and in particular, that the calculated $Q^2$ dependence of $F_2^{…

Quark transverse charge densities in the from lattice QCD

2009

Abstract We extend the formalism relating electromagnetic form factors to transverse quark charge densities in the light-front frame to the case of a spin-3/2 baryon and calculate these transverse densities for the Δ ( 1232 ) isobar using lattice QCD. The transverse charge densities for a transversely polarized spin-3/2 particle are characterized by monopole, dipole, quadrupole, and octupole patterns representing the structure beyond that of a pure point-like spin-3/2 particle. We present lattice QCD results for the Δ-isobar electromagnetic form factors for pion masses down to approximatively 350 MeV for three cases: quenched QCD, two-degenerate flavors of dynamical Wilson quarks, and three…

QCD sum rules for heavy baryons

2001

We construct the heavy baryonic currents by using the Bethe-Salpeter wave functions in the heavy quark limit. We discuss the one-loop renormalization of these heavy baryonic currents as well as their two-point correlators up to the order $1/M_h$. For a special case, we do the QCD sum rule for masses of the doublet (3/2,5/2).

Quark-model description of the NN*(1440) potential

2001

We derive a $NN^*$(1440) potential from a non-relativistic quark-quark interaction and a chiral quark cluster model for the baryons. By making use of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation we examine the most important features of this interaction in comparison to those obtained from meson-exchange models.
