Deviations from equilibrium at the interface of a charged membrane

The local equilibrium assumption commonly employed for the transport through the interface of a charged membrane has been analysed from a simplified electric double layer model. This layer is characterized on the basis of a surface potential arising from a non-zero surface charge density placed on the membrane surface. The dependence of deviations from local equilibrium on the characteristic parameters of the problem is shown. Connection with the classical treatment by Donnan is discussed. On the basis of experimental results for phase transitions in compressed ZnO nanoparticles, we show the limitations of classical thermodynamics approaches (Gibbs and Landau). Bridging scales with thermodynamics: from nano to macro

We have recently developed a method to calculate thermodynamic properties of macroscopic systems by extrapolating properties of systems of molecular dimensions. Appropriate scaling laws for small systems were derived using the method for small systems thermodynamics of Hill, considering surface and nook energies in small systems of varying sizes. Given certain conditions, Hill's method provides the same systematic basis for small systems as conventional thermodynamics does for large systems. We show how the method can be used to compute thermodynamic data for the macroscopic limit from knowledge of fluctuations in the small system. As an intrinsic property of natural materials, land surface emissivity LSE is an important surface parameter and can be derived from the emitted radiance measured from space. Besides radiometric calibration and cloud detection, two main problems need to be resolved to obtain LSE values from space measurements. Closed Form Approximation of Swap Exposures

This paper provides closed form lower and upper bounds for the price of European swaption on cross currency basis swap with the presence of dynamic basis spreads. Cross currency basis spreads are treated as integrals of spot spreads, approach familiar from interest rate models. The spot spread is modelled by two-factor mean reverting Gaussian model that is equivalent to two-factor Hull-White model introduced by [Hull and White(1994)]. This model allows closed form approximations and relatively well fitting and simple calibration to the spread term structure.

Within most of the 17 plane symmetry groups, individual symmetry operations act in multiple, nonequivalent ways. This, and the fact that many groups can be realized on the basis of different unit cells and generating regions, poses difficulties for visual discrimination and identification. Because of inherent confounds, only few of the groups can be studied by traditional experimental methodology. A family of kernel methods, based on the @c-filter structure, is presented for non-linear system identification and time series prediction. The kernel trick allows us to develop the natural non-linear extension of the (linear) support vector machine (SVM) @c-filter [G. Camps-Valls, M. Martinez-Ramon, J.L. Rojo-Alvarez, E.
