New design and simulation of the ion guide for neutron-induced fission products at the IGISOL facility
2023
Measurements of independent fission yield distributions in neutron-induced fission at high neutron energies are important for our fundamental understanding of the fission process, and are also relevant for reactor physics applications. So far, measurements of independent fission yields in proton-induced fission have been performed at the IGISOL facility at the University of Jyväskylä, using the Penning trap as a high resolving-power mass-filter. In order to also facilitate measurements of neutron-induced fission, a dedicated ion guide and a proton-to-neutron converter was developed. However, the first measurement indicates that fewer fission products than expected reach the Penning trap. To…
Polarimetry on dense samples of spin-polarized 3He by magnetostatic detection
1997
Abstract A very sensitive low-field fluxgate magnetometer is used to detect the static magnetic field produced by dense samples of spin-polarized 3He gas contained in spherical glass cells at pressures around several bars. The 3He nuclear polarization can be extracted with high precision ΔP P by utilizing magnetostatic detection in combination with adiabatic fast-passage spin reversal. The polarization losses can be kept well below 0.1% thus making this type of polarimetry almost non-destructive. More simply even, P can be measured with reduced accuracy by the change of field when the cell is removed from the fluxgate. In this case the accuracy is limited to about 10% due to the uncertainti…
A consistent microscopic theory of collective motion in the framework of an ATDHF approach
1978
Based on merely two assumptions, namely the existence of a collective Hamiltonian and that the collective motion evolves along Slater determinants, we first derive a set of adiabatic time-dependent Hartree-Fock equations (ATDHF) which determine the collective path, the mass and the potential, second give a unique procedure for quantizing the resulting classical collective Hamiltonian, and third explain how to use the collective wavefunctions, which are eigenstates of the quantized Hamiltonian.
Photon-pion charge asymmetry in e+e− reactions: A laboratory for perturbative QCD phases
1987
Abstract The charge asymmetry in the production of a photon and a meson in e + e - annihilation is studied in perturbative QCD. This quantity measures the interference of amplitudes governed by different momentum scales. It is thus a powerful tool to probe strong interaction phases at high energy and in the context of Sudakov exponentiation and the chromo Coulomb phase. We find a null result at the lowest non-trivial order off α s in the entire kinematic region described by perturbative QCD.
Violence and the Peasant Elite in Lower Satakunta (1550–1680)
2016
“The lengthy quarrels over inheritance hint that these people had fiery tempers”, wrote Mauno Jokipii in his pioneering article on the history of the Lavila family—one of the prominent families of freeholders in Lower Satakunta.1 In our study on the women from that same family, Virpi Nissila and I have encountered about 100 court cases from the 1620 to the 1650s, in which six women from two generations have been present. The most prominent of them is Anna Martensdotter who appeared in court 28 times in the four years for which we have the court minutes still intact. These records tell of her offensive behaviour: neighbours complaining about her physical violence, insults, appropriations, an…
Stable Images and Discriminants
2020
We show that the discriminant/image of a stable perturbation of a germ of finite \(\mathcal {A}\)-codimension is a hypersurface with the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres in middle dimension, provided the target dimension does not exceed the source dimension by more than one. The number of spheres in the wedge is called the discriminant Milnor number/image Milnor number. We prove a lemma showing how to calculate this number, and show that when the target dimension does not exceed the source dimension, the discriminant Milnor number and the \(\mathcal {A}\)-codimension obey the “Milnor–Tjurina relation” familiar in the case of isolated hypersurface singularities. This relation remains conj…
