Modeling the interactions between light and crystallizing polymer during fast cooling

2004

In this work, an experimental set-up able to quench thin polymer films whilst recording the sample thermal history as well as the overall and depolarized light intensities of a laser beam emerging from the sample is described. The interactions between the light beam and the crystallizing material have been modeled accounting for absorption and scattering phenomena. The proposed model was found to be able to reproduce the ex- perimentally observed behavior of light intensities and it was validated by comparison with conventional DSC analysis. On the basis of this model, a method to obtain crystallinity evo- lution is proposed and applied to some fast cooling runs. The method was applied to q…

Displacement Defect Formation in Complex Oxide Crystals under Irradiation

2000

The work is devoted to an analysis of formation processes of the radiation displacement defects (RDDs) and colour centres (CCs) in complex oxide crystals under irradiation. The calculation results on: the displacement process simulation as well as an analysis of the RDD and CC accumulation kinetics are presented. New experimental results on additional absorption spectra induced by neutron irradiation of LiNbO(3) (LNO) crystals doped with Fe and Cr and YAlO(3) (YAP) crystals doped with Nd and Er as well are presented. Dose dependencies of the additional absorption are compared and their peculiarities are discussed. The obtained results confirm that CCs causing the irradiation induced absorpt…

Response behaviour of reinforced concrete beams strengthened in shear with FRP

2019

In this paper an analytical model, able to predict the shear-displacement response of slender RC beams reinforced in shear with FRP, is presented. It allows to evaluate the complete strain and stress fields, for each load step, on the basis of the MCFT framework. The key role of the effective strain of FRP reinforcement at failure has been investigated. At the same time, the interaction FRP-steel stirrups has been taken into account by introducing an appropriate factor. It is able to reproduce the decrease of stirrups stress level when an external reinforcement is used. The proposed model has been validate against a database of specimens collected in literature. Results have shown the remar…

Magnetic octupole moment of Yb-173 using collinear laser spectroscopy

2021

The hyperfine constants of the $4{f}^{14}6s6p^{3}P_{2}^{o}$ state in neutral Yb have been measured using three different dipole transitions. This state was recently shown to have a comparatively large hyperfine magnetic octupole splitting, and thus a puzzlingly large magnetic octupole moment. The measurement is performed using collinear laser spectroscopy on a fast atomic beam, which provides a straightforward route to probing long-lived metastable atomic states with high resolution. From the combined analysis of all three lines we find no significant evidence for a nonzero octupole moment in $^{173}\mathrm{Yb}$.

High-precision mass measurements and production of neutron-deficient isotopes using heavy-ion beams at IGISOL

2019

An upgraded ion-guide system for the production of neutron-deficient isotopes with heavy-ion beams has been commissioned at the IGISOL facility with an $^{36}\mathrm{Ar}$ beam on a $^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Ni}$ target. It was used together with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap to measure the masses of $^{82}\mathrm{Zr}, ^{84}\mathrm{Nb}, ^{86}\mathrm{Mo}, ^{88}\mathrm{Tc}$, and $^{89}\mathrm{Ru}$ ground states and the isomeric state $^{88}\mathrm{Tc}^{m}$. Of these, $^{89}\mathrm{Ru}$ and $^{88}\mathrm{Tc}^{m}$ were measured for the first time. The precision of measurements of $^{82}\mathrm{Zr}, ^{84}\mathrm{Nb}$, and $^{88}\mathrm{Tc}$ was significantly improved. The literature value for $^…

Structural investigation of e-beam cured epoxy resins through solid state NMR

2012

Abstract In this paper the network structure of e-beam cured DGEBF based epoxy resins is investigated. Two epoxy systems, having different reactivity and cured in different process conditions, were analyzed through solid state NMR spectroscopy. The analysis shows that the more reactive system has higher cross-linking density and higher uniformity of network distribution. Similar information were obtained, in a previous work, on the same systems through dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. It is worth noting that unlike DMTA tests, which interfere with the molecular structure of the analyzed material, due to the heating during the analysis itself, more reliable information, without any artef…

Radiation curing of carbon fibre composites

2014

Epoxy/carbon fibre reinforced composites were produced by means of e-beam irradiation through a pulsed 10 MeV electron beam accelerator. The matrix consisted of a difunctional epoxy monomer (DGEBA) and an initiator of cationic polymerisation, while the reinforcement was a unidirectional high modulus carbon fibre fabric. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis was carried out in order to determine the cross-linking degree. The analysis pointed out a nonuniformity in the cross-linking degree of the e-beam cured panels, with the formation of clusters at low Tg (glass transition temperature) and clusters at high Tg. An out-of-mould post irradiation thermal treatment on e-beam cured samples provides…

Influence of the e-beam irradiation and photo-oxidation aging on the structure and properties of LDPE-OMMT nanocomposite films

2012

Abstract In this paper two systems, polyethylene (LDPE) and polyethylene/commercial organo-modified montmorillonite (LDPE/OMMT) nanocomposite, were subjected to e-beam irradiation at different doses and both the molecular modifications and mechanical properties have been investigated through solubility, FT-IR, calorimetric and tensile tests. Moreover, in some of the irradiated systems photo-oxidation aging was performed and its effects were studied. The results show an enhancement with irradiation of the positive effect of the nano-filler loading, related to the increase of the mechanical properties, due to the increase of the nano-filler polymer interaction. Nevertheless calorimetric and F…

Time-resolved optical absorption in YAlO3 crystals

2004

Abstract The present work is devoted to the investigation of transient absorption (TA) induced by a pulsed electron beam (E=250 keV ) in pure and doped YAlO3 (YAP) single crystals. The nature of centers responsible for TA is discussed.

Bulk sensitive photo emission spectroscopy of compounds

2007

This work reports about bulk-sensitive, high energy photoelectron spectroscopy from the valence band of CoTiSb excited by photons from 1.2 to 5 keV energy. The high energy photoelectron spectra were taken at the KMC-1 high energy beamline of BESSY II employing the recently developed Phoibos 225 HV analyser. The measurements show a good agreement to calculations of the electronic structure using the LDA scheme. It is shown that the high energy spectra reveal the bulk electronic structure better compared to low energy XPS spectra.
