The Development of a Spanish Language Version of the Worn Out Scale of the General Well-Being Questionnaire (GWBQ)

2006

The paper describes the development of a short Spanish-language version of the General Well-Being Questionnaire (GWBQ; Cox & Gotts, 1987), based on the 12 items of its Worn Out scale. Research has shown the English-version Worn Out scale to be sensitive to aspects of the design and management of work. This study aimed to test its crosscultural consistency in a Spanish-language workplace context. The data were collected from a sample of 229 workers in Valencia (Spain). Confirmatory Factor Analyses showed the factorial validity, reliability, and concurrent validity of the new Spanish version to be adequate. The sensitivity of the new measure to safety behavior and the reporting of accidents w…

Religious social engagement and valuation of life in Portuguese centenarians

2017

In very advanced age, successful aging becomes more and more difficult, for instance because age-related losses challenge the possibility to remaining socially engaged. This study analyzes the activity engagement patterns of Portuguese centenarians and its relation with well-being. A sample of 89 centenarians (Mage= 101.1 years, SD=1.4, range: 100–105) from the PT100 Oporto Centenarian Study was considered. Results demonstrated that the majority of the centenarians performed religious activities (94.4%), with 80 individuals (89.9%) praying and 34 (38.2%) going to the church. Regression analyses indicated that religious social engagement was related to Valuation of Life, even when the contri…

The Conceptions of Quality of Life, Wellness and Well-Being: A Literature Review

2022

In the last few years, a growing body of research has been interested in wellness, quality of life, and well-being issues. Furthermore, institutions, governments, and policymakers start to introduce numerous physical and mental well-being programs, whereas scholars interested in well-being research use different indicators to evaluate them. Although these terms are popular in the scientific debate, they are variously interpreted and at the conceptual level do not have a standard definition. This disagreement is particularly relevant when considering the questions related to their measurement and application in empirical research. This review explores the main theoretical conceptions of qual…

Change and stability: Within-person life satisfaction over a 20-year period using data from the HUNT survey

2020

Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate within-person life satisfaction (LS) dynamics for two age groups, 20–29 and 30–39 years, from 1984 to 1986 and to follow them over a 20-year period. Methods: Data from 1984 to 2008 were extracted from the large, prospective, longitudinal North-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT), Norway. This paper includes data from more than 14,500 persons. Data were analysed using logistic regression, and LS dynamics were modelled using gender, time and self-rated health. Results: The analyses revealed that about 20% of people in these age groups had a stable level in LS, also known as set point. Long-term LS change, defined as ⩾2 SDs, was reported f…

Professional learning communities and teacher well‐being? A comparative analysis of primary schools in England and Finland

2009

The article is a comparative analysis of the policy and practice of professional learning communities (PLCs) in primary schools in England and Finland. The concept of PLC has become a globally fashionable one and has been explicitly advocated in policy documents in both countries. Drawing from a database of qualitative semi‐structured interviews with primary teachers, four key themes affecting their work and well‐being are identified: the primary school community; collaborative working; continuing professional development and trust and accountability. The realities of PLCs as experienced by primary teachers in each country are contrasted. Similarities in teachers’ responses were found, espe…

Communicating Personal Goals: Consequences for Person Perception in the Work and Family Domains

2006

Based on a set of three experimental studies (total N = 608), we examined how people appraise another person’s well-being and motivation in the work and family domains on the basis of knowledge of this other person’s goal system. Participants were introduced to the life situation of either a woman or a man belonging to a successful dual-career couple. This target person reported pursuing only work-related personal goals (work priority), only family-related personal goals (family priority) or both work- and family-related goals (balanced goal system). Participants were asked to appraise the target person’s life satisfaction as well as a number of work- and family-related attributes. Overall…

2021

Abstract Applying social investment theory (SIT), we examined whether employment trajectories until midlife, with differential investments in education and employment, are associated with social investments during early life and with work-related well-being in midlife, with a special reference to potential differences between self-employment and paid work. In the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (n = 6496; 2963 men, 3533 women), life-history calendars from age 16–45 were used to determine the respondents’ yearly employment statuses (student, full-time employee, part-time employee, self-employed, unemployed, on parental leave, on sabbatical leave or otherwise not working). Latent class ana…
