Academic Workload, Well-Being and Workaholism in Italian Universities
2017
As suggested by Romainville (1996), universities are the only organizations focussed on dual core functions of knowledge creation and knowledge transmission through the processes of research and teaching. University academic staff do complex work in an increasingly demanding environment, so the workaholism risk seems to be higher than in other professions. Although this type of work behavior seems to be culturally approved by the academic community, it constitutes an element of risk for the health and well being of those who have chosen this type of profession on the basis of different expectations, especially in pace, amount, and independence at work. A very interesting line of research (w…
THE ROLE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS IN ONCOGENETIC COUNSELLING
2010
Background: As result of the recent developments in DNA testing and the knowledge that cancer can be hereditary, it is now possible to offer genetic counselling to people within identified “cancer families”, and to inform them about their assumed increased risk for developing cancer. The aim of this study was to test the role of psychological aspect in oncogenetic counselling. The primary purpose of the research was to evaluate the difference between Anxiety Trait and Anxiety State in subjects going to oncogenetic counselling. The secondary aim was to explore the relationships between alexithymia, personality trait, coping style, psychological distress, in subjects attending genetic counsel…
Consensus On Women'S Health Aspects Of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Pcos)
2012
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in females with a high prevalence. The etiology of this heterogeneous condition remains obscure and its phenotype expression varies. Two, widely cited, previous ESHRE/ASRM-sponsored PCOS consensus workshops focused on diagnosis (published in 2004) and infertility management (published in 2008). The present third PCOS consensus paper summarizes current knowledge and identifies knowledge gaps regarding various women's health aspects of PCOS. Relevant topics addressed-all dealt with in a systematic fashion-include adolescence, hirsutism and acne, contraception, menstrual cycle abnormalities, quality of life, ethnicity, preg…

Traps and Surprises in Long Time Series. Considerations on Italian Living Standards after Unification
2011
Using Italian time series since 1861, we explore the evolution of living standards of Italian population after the Unification. Furthermore, we investigate the informative capacity of the aforementioned series to discover suitable long-run relationships among the variables to be used for a further modelling. Notwithstanding, the dynamics and the statistical characteristics of series have dramatically changed – both within each time series and among all ones – some interesting results have been drawn on the evolution of Italian living standards.
Defining and measuring the development of a country over time
2012
This paper introduces the concept of harmonic growth as an extended acceptation of the notion of development, and discusses its measurement via the Harmonic Growth Index (HGI). The growth is seen as harmonic when the behaviour of a benchmark time series, which here is a measure of wealth, such as per capita GDP, is followed by a similar pattern in socio-economic series. Unlike most widely used indicators in the literature, which take into account the measurement of development over a single time, HGI measures the degree to which a social indicator’s time series pattern matches with the GDP’s. The index is a function, ranging in [0, 1], of the coefficients of the uniform B-splines fitted to …
A PCA-AA approach to measure equal and sustainable well-being in the Italian Regions
2015
The study proposes a measure of the well-being of Italian regions in terms of efficiency, considering simultaneously economic, social and environmental aspects. The paper suggests an integrated approach using Principal…
Families Are Changing: What About the Policies? Between Good Intentions and Good Practices
2022
The pandemic crisis has, on the one hand exacerbated the fragility of many Italian families, but on the other hand it has also reconfirmed the remarkable resilience of family relationships, with families having once again shown that they know how to react to the strong and rapid changes caused by the emergency, with an equally strong and rapid response capacity. As is well known, one of the pillars on which the Italian welfare system is based is family welfare, i.e. the set of caregiving and mutual support practices implemented within family relationships that make it possible to compensate for the shortcomings of public welfare in terms of both cash and in-kind support. Actually, the “fami…
