Influence of Resilience and Optimism on Distress and Intention to Self-Isolate: Contrasting Lower and Higher COVID-19 Illness Risk Samples From an Ex…
2021
The study investigated the influence of resilience and dispositional optimism on, first, emotional distress and, second, the intention to self-isolate, experienced by people with a lower and higher illness risk, during the lockdown imposed in Spain during the first COVID-19 wave. These effects were investigated against the background of the Health Belief Model (HBM). A convenience sample of N = 325 participants completed an online survey including an ad-hoc questionnaire measuring the HBM core factors: Perceived health threat (susceptibility and severity of getting infected), and perceived quarantine benefits and costs. Self-efficacy and perceived social pressure were also measured. Based o…
The role of parents' and teachers' beliefs in children's self-concept development
2016
This study examined to what extent parents' and teachers' beliefs about children's abilities predict children's self-concept of math and reading ability development during the first grade, and whether these predictions depend on the child's gender and level of performance. One hundred fifty-two children and their parents and teachers were followed across first grade. The results showed, first, that the associations between teachers' beliefs and children's subsequent self-concept of ability depended on the level of the children's performance. Among high-performers, the higher the teachers' beliefs about their students' abilities in reading or in math, the higher the subsequent level of self-…
Religiosity and meditation practice : Exploring their explanatory power on psychological adjustment
2019
There has been increased interest in the relationships between religiosity, meditation practice and well-being, but there is lack of understanding as to how specific religious components and distinct meditation practices could influence different positive and negative psychological adjustment outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the explanatory power of religious beliefs and the practice of prayer, focused attention (FA), open monitoring (OM), and compassion meditation (CM) on psychological adjustment, taking into consideration a number of practice-related variables such as session length, frequency of practice and lifetime practice. Psychological adjustment was assessed by means o…
Public health nurses’ concerns in preschool-aged children’s health check-ups
2015
The aim is to describe Finnish public health nurses’ concerns during regular health check-ups of preschool-aged children. In 2011, focus-group interviews were conducted with 12 public health nurses. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis. Public health nurses’ concerns dealt with the healthy growth and development of children and their ability to cope with difficult family situations, as well as the everyday reality of parenting. The concerns of public health nurses related to children’s health focused on their psychosocial development. Concerns also focused on the interaction between mother and baby, children’s behavioural problems and their cognitive development, parents…
Translation and validation of the Finnish version of the Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ)
2015
Abstract Background and aim Low back pain (LBP) is a debilitating problem worldwide causing disability and reducing quality of life. The Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ) was developed on the basis of the assumption that fear-avoidance beliefs play a major role in LBP-related disability. It comprises 16 items scored by the patient and includes sub-scores for fear-avoidance beliefs regarding work and physical activity. This study aimed to translate and validate the Finnish version of the FABQ and to measure its properties among Finnish patients with LBP. Material and methods A forward-backward translation procedure was used based on modified recommended guidelines. The FABQ was app…
Health and Demographic Characteristics of Patients Attending a Newly-Opened Medical Facility in a Remote Amazonian Community: A Descriptive Study
2018
Peru is a country with wide regional disparities in health. Remote Amazonian communities have high rates of poverty and poor access to health services. There is a lack of data on morbidity and use of health services in the region. We describe a descriptive, cross-sectional study of the demographic characteristics and presenting complaints of attendees to a newly-opened primary care facility in a remote community. This was supplemented by structured interviews of adult attendees to build a picture of sociocultural determinants of health locally, including engagement with traditional forms of medicine. Our study provides novel insights into an under-studied and under-resourced area. We found …

Przekonania o sobie i świecie nieletnich przebywających w placówkach resocjalizacyjnych
2019
W artykule zaprezentowano część wyników badań uzyskanych za pomocą Skali orientacji pozytywnej (w polskiej adaptacji Marioli Łaguny, Piotra Olesia i Doroty Filipiuk) i Skali wiary w grę o sumie zerowej (autorstwa Joanny Różyckiej i Bogdana Wojciszke). Orientacja pozytywna to wymiar osobowości decydujący o skłonności jednostki do odbierania i przetwarzania informacji o sobie i ś…
