The large sub-continent of Siberia is one of the richest mineral and oil resources on Earth. In its center, one region has gained prominence: Lake Baikal. It is one of the oldest, the deepest, and the lake with the greatest volume on Earth and is inhabited by more than 1,500 endemic species. It was Pallas (1771) who discovered in the lake a sponge species, Lubomirskia baicalensis (Porifera: Demospongiae), which dominates Lake Baikal's littoral-zone benthos. Role of terrestrial carbon in aquatic UV exposure and photoprotective pigmentation of meiofauna in subarctic lakes

Summary Aquatic organisms are adversely influenced by ultraviolet radiation (UV) and utilise photoprotective strategies, including pigmentation. We examined UV-protective melanin pigmentation of aquatic meiofauna (Cladocera) in relation to the UV exposure across 25 tree line lakes in Finland to address the potential effects of increased UV and altered input of UV-screening terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on aquatic organisms. Influence of artificial reefs on the surrounding infauna: Analysis of meiofauna

We adopted a bottom-up approach in studying the effect of two artificial reefs in contrasting environmental conditions (sandy-mud and meso-eutrophic in the Adriatic Sea versus coarse sands and oligotrophic in the Tyrrhenian Sea) on the surrounding environment by assessing changes in the meiofauna. The role of lantern fish (Myctophidae) in the life-cycle of cetacean parasites from western Mediterranean waters

Myctophids (lantern fish) and cephalopods play a key role in trophic webs from the continental slope and oceanic waters linking the zooplankton to top predators. Many cetaceans feed on both lantern fish and cephalopods, and such prey would thus be expected to bridge the trophic gap in the life-cycles of helminths infecting cetaceans. Lacustrine, profundal meiobenthic oligochaetes as indicators of trophy and organic loading

Meiobenthic and macrobenthic oligochaetes were collected from two depths in Lake Pajanne and examined together with environmental data in which two environmental gradients can be seen. Numbers of Piguetiella blanci, Aeolosoma quaternarium and Aeolosoma hemprichi were positively correlated with oxygen saturation and negatively correlated with total phosphorus and COD suggesting that these species are indicators of oligotrophic conditions. Numbers of Amphichaeta leydigii, Specaria josinae and Vejdovskyella comata were positively correlated with total phosphorus which implies that these species prefer eutrophic conditions.
