Penning-trap-assisted study of 115Ru beta decay

2011

The beta decay of 115Ru has been studied by means of Penning-trap-assisted beta and gamma spectroscopy at the IGISOL facility. The level scheme of 115Rh has been substantially extended and compared with the level systematics of lighter rhodium isotopes. Tentative candidates for three states of the deformed K = 1/2 band have been suggested. The beta-strength distribution of the beta decay of 115Ru differs from the beta decays of 111, 113, 113mRu isotopes due to non-observation of the 3-quasiparticle states in 115Rh. The decay properties of 115Ru indicate a spin-parity of (3/2+ for its beta-decaying ground state. In addition, possible Nilsson states as well as the shape and spin transitions i…

The limits of the nuclear landscape

2012

In 2011, 100 new nuclides were discovered. They joined the approximately 3,000 stable and radioactive nuclides that either occur naturally on Earth or are synthesized in the laboratory. Every atomic nucleus, characterized by a specific number of protons and neutrons, occupies a spot on the chart of nuclides, which is bounded by 'drip lines' indicating the values of neutron and proton number at which nuclear binding ends. The placement of the neutron drip line for the heavier elements is based on theoretical predictions using extreme extrapolations, and so is uncertain. However, it is not known how uncertain it is or how many protons and neutrons can be bound in a nucleus. Here we estimate t…

Studies of Weak Beta-Delayed Protons Emitted in the Decay of Odd-Z, Tz = -3/2 Nuclei

1983

Radioactive decay of Tz = - 3/2 nuclides, 27P and 31Cl, predicted to be weak β-delayed proton precursors, have been looked for. Two proton groups having energies of 989 ± 15 and 1528 ± 20 keV and a half-life of 150 ± 25 ms were associated with the decay of 31Cl. The search for 27P is still under way, but the first qualitative results are briefly discussed.

ISOLTRAP Mass Measurements for Weak-Interaction Studies

2005

International audience; The conserved-vector-current (CVC) hypothesis of the weak interaction and the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix are two fundamental postulates of the Standard Model. While existing data on CVC supports vector current conservation, the unitarity test of the CKM matrix currently fails by more than two standard deviations. High-precision mass measurements performed with the ISOLTRAP experiment at ISOLDE/CERN provide crucial input for these fundamental studies by greatly improving our knowledge of the decay energy of super-allowed beta decays. Recent results of mass measurements on the beta emitters 18Ne, 22Mg, 34Ar, and 74Rb as pertaining to weak-i…

Towards an Experimental Determination of the Transition Strength Between the Ground States of $^{20}$F and $^{20}$Ne

2017

Electron capture on $^{20}$Ne is thought to play a crucial role in the final evolution of electron-degenerate ONe stellar cores. Recent calculations suggest that the capture process is dominated by the second-forbidden transition between the ground states of $^{20}$Ne and $^{20}$F, making an experimental determination of this transition strength highly desirable. To accomplish this task we are refurbishing an intermediate-image magnetic spectrometer capable of focusing 7 MeV electrons, and designing a scintillator detector surrounded by an active cosmic-ray veto shield, which will serve as an energy-dispersive device at the focal plane.

QRPA estimate for the Δ (1232) contribution to the Gamow-Teller decay of heavy nuclei

1991

Abstract The contribution of the Δ (1232) isobars to the nuclear beta decay strength function is estimated in the framework of the charge-changing form of the QRPA. This procedure is applied to neutron-deficient tin isotopes. The results imply that the quenching of the low-energy Gamow-Teller decay strength cannot attributed to the presence of delta admixtures in the nuclear wave function.

Physics at a future Neutrino Factory and super-beam facility

2009

The conclusions of the Physics Working Group of the international scoping study of a future Neutrino Factory and super-beam facility (the ISS) are presented. The ISS was carried by the international community between NuFact05, (the 7th International Workshop on Neutrino Factories and Superbeams, Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, Rome, June 21-26, 2005) and NuFact06 (Ivine, California, 24{30 August 2006). The physics case for an extensive experimental programme to understand the properties of the neutrino is presented and the role of high-precision measurements of neutrino oscillations within this programme is discussed in detail. The performance of second generation super-beam experiments, …

Systematic approach to β and 2vββ decays of mass A=100-136 nuclei

2015

In this work we perform a systematic study of pairs of single-β-decaying nuclei in the mass region A = 100–136 to extract information on the effective value of the axial-vector coupling constant gA. As the many-body framework we use the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) and its proton-neutron variant (pnQRPA) in singleparticle valence bases with Woods-Saxon-calculated single-particle energies. It is found that, to a reasonable approximation, gA is a linear function of the mass number A, with a slightly different parametrization below and above the mass A = 121. Using the values of gA extracted from the linear fit, as well as an average constant value of gA, we calculate the tw…
