Sympathetic tone and ventricular tachycardia

2008

Background The pathogenesis of idiopathic monomorphic ventricular tachycardia is not clear. We suppose that a lack of balance of the sympathetic system could be involved. Frequency domain analyses of the heart rate can be useful to understand autonomic system balance. Therefore we performed this evaluation on a sample of seven children affected by idiopathic monomorphic ventricular tachycardia. Methods and results We performed a Holter recording for palpitations on all the children, with an average age of 12 (range: 7-18 years). In all the patients many episodes of repeated sustained or nonsustained ventricular tachycardia were demonstrated, with an average heart rate of 170 bpm. We exclude…

Fibronectin-bound α5β1 integrins sense load and signal to reinforce adhesion in less than a second

2017

Integrin-mediated mechanosensing of the extracellular environment allows cells to control adhesion and signalling. Whether cells sense and respond to force immediately upon ligand-binding is unknown. Here, we report that during adhesion initiation, fibroblasts respond to mechanical load by strengthening integrin-mediated adhesion to fibronectin (FN) in a biphasic manner. In the first phase, which depends on talin and kindlin as well as on the actin nucleators Arp2/3 and mDia, FN-engaged α5β1 integrins activate focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and c-Src in less than 0.5 s to steeply strengthen α5β1- and αV-class integrin-mediated adhesion. When the mechanical load exceeds a certain threshold, fib…

Essential oil composition of Tanacetum vulgare subsp. siculum (Guss.) Raimondo et Spadaro (Asteraceae) from Sicily

2009

Ninety-four components of the essential oils from aerial parts and capitula of Tanacetum vulgare subsp. siculum (Guss.) Raimondo et Spadaro were detected. alpha-Thujone, beta-thujone and 1,8-cineole were the main constituents of the oils. The analysis allows the assignment of this Tanacetum species to the thujone chemotype.

Asymmetric tandem reactions: New synthetic strategies

2010

The use of domino and multicomponent reactions in asymmetric synthesis is constantly increasing nowadays. This allows for the synthesis of complex molecules in a single synthetic sequence, usually with high atom economy. Herein, we report three examples of new asymmetric tandem reactions recently developed in our laboratories, giving rise to new families of enantiomerically enriched fluorinated and nonfluorinated heterocycles. Thus, 1,4-dihydropyridines (1,4-DHPs) bearing fluorinated substituents at C6 were assembled by means of a Hantzsch-type reaction; cyclic β-amino carbonyl derivatives were prepared using a cross-metathesis (CM)–intramolecular aza-Michael sequence; while fluorinated ind…

Mechanisms of Resistance to Ceftolozane/Tazobactam in Pseudomonas aeruginosa : Results of the GERPA Multicenter Study

2020

ABSTRACT Resistance mechanisms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T) were assessed on a collection of 420 nonredundant strains nonsusceptible to ceftazidime (MIC > 8 μg/ml) and/or imipenem (>4 μg/ml), collected by 36 French hospital laboratories over a one-month period (the GERPA study). Rates of C/T resistance (MIC > 4/4 μg/ml) were equal to 10% in this population (42/420 strains), and 23.2% (26/112) among the isolates resistant to both ceftazidime and imipenem. A first group of 21 strains (50%) was found to harbor various extended-spectrum β-lactamases (1 OXA-14; 2 OXA-19; 1 OXA-35; 1 GES-9; and 3 PER-1), carbapenemases (2 GES-5; 1 IMP-8; and 8 VIM-2), or both (1 VIM-2…

Alternative approach to populate and study the $^{229}Th$ nuclear clock isomer

2019

A new approach to observe the radiative decay of the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer, and to determine its energy and radiative lifetime, is presented. Situated at a uniquely low excitation energy, this nuclear state might be a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, a nuclear laser and the search for time variations of the fundamental constants. The isomer's $\gamma$ decay towards the ground state will be studied with a high-resolution VUV spectrometer after its production by the $\beta$ decay of $^{229}$Ac. The novel production method presents a number of advantages asserting its competitive nature with respect to the commonly used $^{233}$U $\alpha$-decay recoil source. In this …

Tibetas stūpu vēsturiskā attīstība un simbolisms

2018

Nickel induces intracellular calcium mobilization and pathophysiological responses in human cultured airway epithelial cells.

2009

Abstract Environmental exposure to nickel is associated to respiratory disorders and potential toxicity in the lung but molecular mechanisms remain incompletely explored. The extracellular Ca 2+ -sensing receptor (CaSR) is widely distributed and may be activated by divalent cations. In this study, we investigated the presence of CaSR in human cultured airway epithelial cells and its activation by nickel. Nickel transiently increased intracellular calcium (−log EC 50  = 4.67 ± 0.06) in A549 and human bronchial epithelial cells as measured by epifluorescence microscopy. Nickel (20 μM)-induced calcium responses were reduced after thapsigargin or ryanodine exposure but not by Ca 2+ -free medium…

Matryoshka enzyme encapsulation: Development of zymoactive hydrogel particles with efficient lactose hydrolysis capability.

2019

This report describes an efficient procedure for enzyme encapsulation and its application for the hydrolysis of lactose. The enzymatic material that has been developed consists of hydrogel particles (ca. 3–4 mm of diameter) composed of either alginate or an alginate-agarose combination, in which bacterial cells loaded with a thermostable β-galactosidase are embedded. The cells were rendered fully permeable to the substrate, either chromogenic p-nitrophenyl galactose or lactose, by thermal treatment at 75 °C. Hydrogel particles made of a mixture of alginate and agarose displayed high catalytic activity (i.e. 1 g of beads hydrolyze the lactose equivalent of 100 mL of milk in 15 min) and therm…
