Precise Determination of the Unperturbed 8B Neutrino Spectrum
2012
The measurement was performed at the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands.; A measurement of the final state distribution of the 8B $\beta$ decay, obtained by implanting a 8B beam in a double-sided silicon strip detector, is reported here. The present spectrum is consistent with a recent independent precise measurement performed by our collaboration at the IGISOL facility, Jyvâskylä [O. S. Kirsebom et al., Phys. Rev. C 83, 065802 (2011)]. It shows discrepancies with previously measured spectra, leading to differences in the derived neutrino spectrum. Thanks to a low detection threshold, the neutrino spectrum is for the first time directly ex…
Half-lives for highly forbidden beta decays in medium-heavy nuclei
2016
Kuudellekymmenelle aiemmin tutkimattomalle uniikille beetahajoamiselle laskettiin puoliintumisajat ja tuloksia verrattiin aiempiin tutkimuksiin koskien kerran kiellettyjä uniikkeja siirtymiä ja Gamow-Teller-siirtymiä. Half-lives for 60 previously unstudied highly forbidden beta decays were calculated, and the results compared to earlier studies regarding first-forbidden and Gamow-Teller-decays.
Charged-current neutrino and antineutrino scattering off 116Cd described by Skyrme forces
2014
We perform calculations of the cross sections for charged-current neutrino and antineutrino scattering off 116Cd using ten different Skyrme interactions, at energies typical of supernova neutrinos. We use the quasiparticle random-phase approximation in its charged-changing mode (pnQRPA) to construct the required nuclear wave functions for the participant initial and final states. We compare the results of these calculations with the results of calculations based on the Bonn one-boson-exchange potential. The response of 116Cd to supernova neutrinos is calculated by folding the obtained cross sections with suitably parametrized Fermi-Dirac distributions of the electron-neutrino and electron-a…
Octupole states in 207Tl studied through β decay
2020
The β decay of 207Hg into the single-proton-hole nucleus 207Tl has been studied through γ-ray spectroscopy at the ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS) with the aim of identifying states resulting from coupling of the πs−11/2, πd−13/2, and πh−111/2 shell model orbitals to the collective octupole vibration. Twenty-two states were observed lying between 2.6 and 4.0 MeV, eleven of which were observed for the first time, and 78 new transitions were placed. Two octupole states (s1/2-coupled) are identified and three more states (d3/2-coupled) are tentatively assigned using spin-parity inferences, while further h11/2-coupled states may also have been observed for the first time. Comparisons are made with st…

Betalains: colours for human health.
2022
In the last years, the use of natural phytochemical compounds as protective agents in the prevention and treatment of obesity and the related-metabolic syndrome has gained much attention worldwide. Different studies have shown health benefits for many vegetables such Opuntia ficus-indica and Beta vulgaris and their pigments collectively referred as betalains. Betalains exert antioxidative, anti-inflammation, lipid lowering, antidiabetic and anti-obesity effects. This review summarizes findings in the literature and highlights the therapeutic potential of betalains and their natural source as valid alternative for supplementation in obesity-related disorders treatment. Further research is ne…
uvby{beta} photometry of h and chi Per
2002
We present CCD uvby{beta} photometry for stars in the nuclei of the young double cluster {h} and {chi} Persei. We find that the reddening is highly variable through the {h} Per nucleus, increasing from west to east, with values ranging from E(b-y)=0.328+/-0.022 in the western part to E(b-y)=0.465+/-0.025 in the south-east. Towards {chi} Persei the reddening is fairly constant, with E(b-y)=0.398+/-0.025. Both clusters share a common distance modulus of 11.7+/-0.1mag, and an age of logt=7.10+/-0.05 years. Cone search capability for table J/A+A/394/479/table6 (Coordinates and photometry for stars in h Per) Cone search capability for table J/A+A/394/479/table7 (Coordinates and photometry for st…
A novel intrinsically disordered outer membrane lipoprotein ofAggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitansbinds various cytokines and plays a role in biofil…
2017
Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) do not have a well-defined and stable 3-dimensional fold. Some IDPs can function as either transient or permanent binders of other proteins and may interact with an array of ligands by adopting different conformations. A novel outer membrane lipoprotein, bacterial interleukin receptor I (BilRI) of the opportunistic oral pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans binds a key gatekeeper proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1b. Because the amino acid sequence of the novel lipoprotein resembles that of fibrinogen binder A of Haemophilus ducreyi, BilRI could have the potential to bind other proteins, such as host matrix proteins. However, from th…
Targeting HSP90 with the small molecule inhibitor AUY922 (luminespib) as a treatment strategy against hepatocellular carcinoma
2018
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly malignant tumor that responds very poorly to existing therapies, most probably due to its extraordinary inter- and intra-tumor molecular heterogeneity. The modest therapeutic response to molecular targeted agents underlines the need for new therapeutic approaches for HCC. In our study, we took advantage of well-characterized human HCC cell lines, differing in transcriptomic subtypes, DNA mutation and amplification alterations, reflecting the heterogeneity of primary HCCs, to provide a preclinical evaluation of the specific heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitor AUY922 (luminespib). Indeed, HSP90 is highly expressed in different tumor types, but it…
Plausible Role of Estrogens in Pathogenesis, Progression and Therapy of Lung Cancer
2021
Malignant neoplasms are among the most common diseases and are responsible for the majority of deaths in the developed world. In contrast to men, available data show a clear upward trend in the incidence of lung cancer in women, making it almost as prevalent as breast cancer. Women might be more susceptible to the carcinogenic effect of tobacco smoke than men. Furthermore, available data indicate a much more frequent mutation of the tumor suppressor gene-p53 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) female patients compared to males. Another important factor, however, might lie in the female sex hormones, whose mitogenic or carcinogenic effect is well known. Epidemiologic data show a correlatio…
