High-resolution HLA matching in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a retrospective collaborative analysis.
2013
To validate current donor selection strategies based on previous international studies, we retrospectively analyzed 2646 transplantations performed for hematologic malignancies in 28 German transplant centers. Donors and recipients were high resolution typed for HLA-A, -B, -C, -DRB1, and -DQB1. The highest mortality in overall survival analysis was seen for HLA-A, -B, and DRB1 mismatches. HLA-DQB1 mismatched cases showed a trend toward higher mortality, mostly due to HLA-DQB1 antigen disparities. HLA incompatibilities at >1 locus showed additive detrimental effects. HLA mismatching had no significant effect on relapse incidence and primary graft failure. Graft source had no impact on surviv…
Association of functional DBH genetic variants with alcohol dependence risk and related depression and suicide attempt phenotypes: Results from a lar…
2012
Abstract Objective Dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) metabolizes the conversion of dopamine to noradrenaline. DBH, located on chromosome 9q34.2 has variants with potential functional consequences which may be related to alterations of neurotransmitter function and several psychiatric phenotypes, including alcohol dependence (AD), depression (MD) and suicidal behavior (SA). The aim of this association study in a large multicenter sample of alcohol-dependent individuals and controls is to investigate the role of DBH SNPs and haplotypes in AD risk and associated phenotypes (AD with MD or SA). Method 1606 inpatient subjects with DSM-IV AD from four addiction treatment centers and 1866 control sub…
Analysis of 55 cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in an Indian population and review of literature
2021
Background This study reviews the demographic, clinical and radiographic features of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor(AOT) diagnosed in an Indian population over 50 years and also evaluate and compare follicular AOT(F-AOT) and extra-follicular AOT(EF-AOT). Material and Methods 55 diagnosed cases of AOT from 1971-2020 were studied retrospectively. The data regarding the age, sex, location, variant of AOT, duration, clinical features, radiographic appearance, treatment and recurrence were collected and analysed. Results Of the 722 odontogenic tumors diagnosed, 7.6% were AOTs with higher prevalence of extra-follicular (67.3%) than follicular (32.7%) variant. All the tumors were intraosseous with …
MR imaging of pancreatic changes in patients with transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia major.
1999
The aim of this study was to evaluate MR imaging changes of the pancreas in patients with transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia major.Twenty patients with transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia major were examined using MR imaging at 0.5 T, with spin-echo T1-weighted, fast spin-echo T2-weighted, and gradient-echo T2*-weighted sequences. Image analysis was performed to assess pancreas-to-fat signal intensity ratios for all pulse sequences. Pancreatic exocrine and endocrine function and serum ferritin levels were assessed. Twenty healthy volunteers underwent MR imaging with the same three sequences and served as a control group. The pancreas-to-fat signal intensity ratio was significantly dec…
Brain atrophy and lesion load in a large population of patients with multiple sclerosis
2005
Objective: To measure white matter (WM) and gray matter (GM) atrophy and lesion load in a large population of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) using a fully automated, operator-independent, multiparametric segmentation method. Methods: The study population consisted of 597 patients with MS and 104 control subjects. The MRI parameters were abnormal WM fraction (AWM-f), global WM-f (gWM-f), and GM fraction (GM-f). Results: Significant differences between patients with MS and control subjects included higher AWM-f and reduced gWM-f and GM-f. MRI data showed significant differences between patients with relapsing-remitting and secondary progressive forms of MS. Significant correlations bet…
Increased expression of interleukin-32 in the inflamed ileum of ankylosing spondylitis patients
2012
Objective. To study the mRNA expression and protein tissue distribution of IL-32 in ileal biopsy specimens from patients with AS. Methods. Quantitative gene expression analysis, by real-time PCR, of IL-32, IL-1b, IL-10, TNF-a and IFN-g was performed on ileal biopsies of 15 AS and 15 Crohn’s disease (CD) patients and 10 healthy subjects (HSs). IL-32 tissue distribution was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The effect of IL-32 on the production of IL-10 by intestinal epithelial cell lines was also evaluated. Results. In the ileal specimens of patients with AS and intestinal chronic inflammation, significant up-regulation of IL-32 at both the mRNA and protein levels was found as compared with…
IL-34 is overexpressed in the inflamed salivary glands of patients with Sjogren's syndrome and is associated with the local expansion of pro-inflamma…
2013
Objectives To investigate the expression of IL-34 in labial salivary glands (LSGs) of patients with primary SS (p-SS) and its role in inducing a pro-inflammatory monocyte phenotype. Methods LSG biopsies were obtained from 20 patients with p-SS and 10 patients with non-Sjogren's sicca syndrome (n-SS). The expression of IL-34, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-17 and IL-23 was assessed by real-time PCR. IL-34 expression was also investigated in LSGs by immunohistochemistry. The frequencies of subpopulations of CD14(+) monocytes were evaluated by flow cytometry among isolated mononuclear cells from peripheral blood and salivary glands from both patients and controls. The role of recombinant IL-34 on isolated p…
Transfusional Hemochromatosis: Quantitative Relation of MR Imaging Pituitary Signal Intensity Reduction to Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism
2000
To assess the relationship between magnetic resonance (MR) imaging pituitary signal intensity reduction in patients with transfusional hemochromatosis and the clinical manifestation of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.Pituitary MR imaging at 0.5 T was performed in 38 consecutive patients affected by secondary hemochromatosis and in 20 healthy volunteers. Serum ferritin levels were estimated in the affected population. Twenty (53%) of the 38 patients had hypogonadotropic hypogonadism diagnosed. Pituitary-to-fat signal intensity ratios were calculated from coronal gradient-echo (GRE) T2*-weighted MR images. The relationship between the quantitative reduction of the pituitary-to-fat signal intens…
Safety of potential breast milk exposure to IFN-β or glatiramer acetate
2019
ObjectiveTo determine whether potential breast milk exposure to interferon-beta (IFN-β) or glatiramer acetate (GA) is safe for the infant.MethodsWe identified 74 infants born to 69 women with MS who breastfed under IFN-β (n = 39), GA (n = 34), or both (n = 1). Women had been enrolled into the German Multiple Sclerosis and Pregnancy Registry during pregnancy. Data were obtained from standardized, telephone-administered questionnaires completed by the mother during pregnancy and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum and the infant's take-home medical record.ResultsThe median duration of exposed breastfeeding was 8.5 months (wide interquartile range: 4.9–12.7 months). Physical growth curves dur…
Polymorphism of C'3 in German, Bulgarian, Iranian and Angola population
1973
Using agarose gel electrophoresis, C'3 was typed in 4 populations. The gene frequencies of the common allele C'3S in these 4 populations were Germans (0.8071), Bulgarians (0.8149), Iranians (0.7920) and Angola (0.9532). The results are discussed.
