Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (s-ICAM-1/s-CD54) in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: association with clinical characteristics and outcome

2003

Background: High serum levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(s-ICAM-1/s-CD54) have been associated with adverse clinical features and poor outcome in chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but their value in the different subtypes of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma has not been well addressed. Patients and methods: Our aim was to study the serum levels of s-ICAM-1 in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and to correlate them with clinical characteristics and outcome. We analyzed the serum levels of s-ICAM-1 in a series of 55 patients with DLBCL diagnosed in a single institution. s-ICAM-1 levels were quantified by an immunoenzymatic assay. Median ag…

Determinants of urinary albumin excretion reduction in essential hypertension: A long-term follow-up study.

2006

The objective of the present study was to assess factors related to long-term changes in urinary albumin excretion (UAE) of nondiabetic microalbuminuric (n = 252) or proteinuric hypertensive individuals (n = 58) in a prospective follow-up.After enrollment, patients were placed on usual care including nonpharmacological treatment and/or treatment with an antihypertensive drug regime to achieve blood pressure135/85 mmHg. Periodic UAE measurements were performed until regression or significant reduction (defined when UAE dropped50% from the initial values, plus reduction of UAE to30 mg/24 h for microalbuminuric patients and300 mg/24 h for proteinuric patients).Among the microalbuminuric patien…

Interferon as treatment for acute hepatitis C

1996

The efficacy of short-course (three months), low-dose (3 million units three times a week) interferon as treatment for acute hepatitis C was evaluated in a meta-analysis of controlled trials. Nine studies (five randomized and four nonrandomized) found by MEDLINE search were eligible for analysis. The outcomes assessed were the rate of patients with normal serum aminotransferases (all trials) and without HCV RNA in blood (five trials) after posttreatment follow-up. Eight trials compared interferon to no treatment, and one compared different schedules of interferon. The methodological quality of the studies was high. However, all trials had been planned for a short-term evaluation based on bi…

Treatment of acute venous thromboembolism with dabigatran or warfarin and pooled analysis

2014

Background— Dabigatran and warfarin have been compared for the treatment of acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) in a previous trial. We undertook this study to extend those findings. Methods and Results— In a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy trial of 2589 patients with acute VTE treated with low-molecular-weight or unfractionated heparin for 5 to 11 days, we compared dabigatran 150 mg twice daily with warfarin. The primary outcome, recurrent symptomatic, objectively confirmed VTE and related deaths during 6 months of treatment occurred in 30 of the 1279 dabigatran patients (2.3%) compared with 28 of the 1289 warfarin patients (2.2%; hazard ratio, 1.08; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.…

A new delivery system of clobetasol-17-propionate (lipid-loaded microspheres 0.025%) compared with a conventional formulation (lipophilic ointment in…

2004

Summary Background  Topical application of clobetasol-17-propionate has been diffusely reported as an efficacious therapy in atrophic/erosive oral lichen planus (OLP), without exposing the patient to systemic side-effects. However, prolonged contact and respective topical effects on the oral mucosa should be avoided. Objectives  The aim of the present study was to evaluate efficacy and compliance of new lipid microspheres loaded with 0·025% of clobetasol propionate (formulation A) compared with a commonly used formulation (a sort of dispersion of a lipophilic ointment in a hydrophilic phase) with the same amount of drug (formulation B) in the topical treatment of OLP. A Novel APOB Mutation Identified by Exome Sequencing Cosegregates With Steatosis, Liver Cancer, and Hypocholesterolemia

2013

Objective— In familial hypobetalipoproteinemia, fatty liver is a characteristic feature, and there are several reports of associated cirrhosis and hepatocarcinoma. We investigated a large kindred in which low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fatty liver, and hepatocarcinoma displayed an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Approach and Results— The proband was a 25-year-old female with low plasma cholesterol and hepatic steatosis. Low plasma levels of total cholesterol and fatty liver were observed in 10 more family members; 1 member was affected by liver cirrhosis, and 4 more subjects died of either hepatocarcinoma or carcinoma on cirrhosis. To identify the causal mutation in this f…

Comparison of topical tacrolimus 0.1 % in pectin ointment with clobetasol 0.5% ointment in adults with moderate to severe desquamative gingivitis: A …

2006

BACKGROUND: Desquamative gingivitis (DG) is a clinical condition characterized by red, painful, glazed, and friable gingiva, which might be a manifestation of some autoimmune mucocutaneous diseases. The time from the development of initial signs of DG to diagnosis can vary from months to years. Based on a literature search, no data concerning patients with DG without signs of autoimmune disease were available. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this trial was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of monotherapy with topical tacrolimus 0.1% in pectin ointment versus clobetasol propionate 0.5% ointment in adults affected by DG. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind clinical trial was conducted at the …

Left ventricular filling abnormalities and obesity-associated hypertension: relationship with overproduction of circulating transforming growth facto…

2005

This study has been designed to evaluate the relationship among transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFbeta1) and some measurements of diastolic function in a population of hypertensive subjects with normal left ventricular ejection fraction. We studied 67 hypertensive outpatients who according to their BMI levels were subdivided into three groups: lean (L), overweight (OW) and obese (OB) hypertensives (HT). Circulating TGFbeta1 and M- and B-mode echocardiography was determined. All hypertensives were further subgrouped, according to European Society of Cardiology Guidelines, into two subsets of patients with normal diastolic function or with diastolic dysfunction. Prevalence of left ventricu…
