ε′/ε in the standard model

2001

We overview the detailed analysis of e ' /e within the Standard Model, pre- sented in ref. (1). When all sources of large logarithms are considered, both at short and long distances, it is possible to perform a reliable Standard Model estimate of e ' /e. The strong S-wave rescattering of the final pions has an important impact on this observ- able (1, 2). The Standard Model prediction is found to be (1) Re(e ' /e) = (1.7 ±0.9) 10 −3 , in good agreement with the most recent experimental measurements. A better estimate of the strange quark mass would reduce the uncertainty to about 30%.

Kaon Decays in the Standard Model

2011

A comprehensive overview of kaon decays is presented. The Standard Model predictions are discussed in detail, covering both the underlying short-distance electroweak dynamics and the important interplay of QCD at long distances. Chiral perturbation theory provides a universal framework for treating leptonic, semileptonic and nonleptonic decays including rare and radiative modes. All allowed decay modes with branching ratios of at least 10^(-11) are analyzed. Some decays with even smaller rates are also included. Decays that are strictly forbidden in the Standard Model are not considered in this review. The present experimental status and the prospects for future improvements are reviewed.

QCD moment sum rules for Coulomb systems: the charm and bottom quark masses

2002

In this work the charm and bottom quark masses are determined from QCD moment sum rules for the charmonium and upsilon systems. To illustrate the special character of these sum rules when applied to Coulomb systems we first set up and study the behaviour of the sum rules in quantum mechanics. In our analysis we include both the results from nonrelativistic QCD and perturbation theory at next-next-to-leading order. The moments are evaluated at different values of q^2 which correspond to different relative influence among the theoretical contributions. In the numerical analysis we obtain the masses by choosing central values for all input parameters. The error is estimated from a variation of…

NNLO Unquenched Calculation of the b Quark Mass

2000

By combining the first unquenched lattice computation of the B-meson binding energy and the two-loop contribution to the lattice HQET residual mass, we determine the (\bar{{MS}}) (b)-quark mass, (\bar{m}_{b}(\bar{m}_{b})). The inclusion of the two-loop corrections is essential to extract (\bar{m}_{b}(\bar{m}_{b})) with a precision of ({\cal O}(\Lambda^{2}_{QCD}/m_{b})), which is the uncertainty due to the renormalon singularities in the perturbative series of the residual mass. Our best estimate is (\bar{m}_{b}(\bar{m}_{b}) = (4.26 \pm 0.09) {\rm GeV}), where we have combined the different errors in quadrature. A detailed discussion of the systematic errors contributing to the final number …

Deeply virtual electroproduction of photons and mesons on the nucleon : leading order amplitudes and power corrections

1999

We estimate the leading order amplitudes for exclusive photon and meson electroproduction reactions at large Q^2 in the valence region in terms of skewed quark distributions. As experimental investigations can currently only be envisaged at moderate values of Q^2, we estimate power corrections due to the intrinsic transverse momentum of the partons in the meson wavefunction and in the nucleon. To this aim the skewed parton distribution formalism is generalized so as to include the parton intrinsic transverse momentum dependence. Furthermore, for the meson electroproduction reactions, we calculate the soft overlap type contributions and compare with the leading order amplitudes. We give firs…

2012

One of the main tasks of an academic library is to guide students in critical evaluation and the ethical use of sources so that they can interpret, evaluate and create information in a correct and proper way. This should be integrated into the subjects, which is a huge challenge. Many students are told that they can freely select the reference style as long as they are consistent. But it is difficult to be consistent when you barely know what a reference style is. It is not easy for the librarian to answer how one refers to a governmental white paper in a self-designed reference system. To do this in a simple way, it is desirable to share the task between academic tutors and the library.  T…

Foretrekker studentene trykte eller elektroniske ressurser?

2012

A project at the University of Agder has studied the use of e-readers as a tool for academic study. E-readers (Kindle DX and iPad) were loaded with texts from required reading lists in five courses with 94 participating students. Initially 87 students responded to the invitation to participate in a survey, but eventually 13 of these submissions had to be removed, as the degree of completion was not sufficient. The final response rate achieved was 79%. Students were in general positive to the use of e-readers but still show a preference for print on paper as the best medium for serious academic study. When reading books 54% preferred print, 28% a combination of print and e-reader and lastly …
