Unraveling the Complexity of Tourist Experience with NFC Technology and Mobile Wallets
2014
By considering the tourist experience as a complex dynamic system, in this paper we depict the traveler as a kybernetes (κυβeρνήτης is the ancient Greek word for ‘sea captain’, ‘steersman’, or ‘governor’) in search of powerful tools to help him or her to obtain directions in the mare magnum of complexity, overcoming the fear of action and taking decisions. We focus our attention on the key role of Near Field Communication technology and mobile wallet as ‘attenuators of complexity’ in the travel and tourism industry.
Evaluation of automatically steered agricultural vehicles
2008
The popularization of automatic guidance systems for off-road vehicles, especially in agricultural environments, has led to a sudden affluence of commercial solutions. As a consequence, end users are often overwhelmed by the spread of possibilities commercially available, on top of the confusion provoked by the guidance accuracy advertised by manufacturers. Therefore, there is a need for a methodology that objectively quantifies the level of performance of any auto-steering system, classifying different solutions according to their accuracy and reliability. This paper describes a method to evaluate the behavior of any automatically driven agricultural vehicle traveling along paths of any cu…
Erfahrungen bei der verkehrsmedizinischen Oberbegutachtung der Fahrtchtigkeit
1966
Evaluation of the laboratory prediction of surface properties of bituminous mixtures
2009
Abstract An experimental and analytical investigation was carried out both in laboratory and in situ on wearing courses. The approach presented in this paper aims to predict the in situ density and surface properties of bituminous layers, during the phase of mix design in laboratory. Therefore, the main attempt of this study is to identify, amongst the commonly available laboratory equipments, the most adequate for producing specimens that, used for carrying out simple and reliable laboratory test, allow the prediction of the surface characteristics of the mixture as laid on site. This is done by comparing the data collected from an experimental site with those calculated from laboratory sp…
VISOCAR: an autonomous industrial transport vehicle guided by visual navigation
2003
The authors describe a vision system, called VISOCAR, for mobile robot guidance in industrial environments. VISOCAR is an optically navigating AGV (automatically guided vehicle) that, owing to its local intelligence, can travel automatically in its natural environment, does not need any dedicated floor installations, and does not impose any restrictions on the route network or factory environment. It can navigate accurately on its track and integrate multisensor information to enhance functional redundancy and system reliability. It is shown that the navigation task can be broken down into a hierarchy of goals, which can be attained by functionally independent modules. The system architectu…
A dynamic channel access strategy for underlay cognitive radio networks: Markov modelling and performance evaluation
2015
Unlike in overlay cognitive radio networks, secondary users in underlay cognitive radio networks can access licensed spectrum even at the presence of a primary user, given that the interference caused by the secondary transmission is lower than a pre-specified threshold. Based on this underlay access principle, we propose in this paper a dynamic channel access strategy for multi-channel cognitive radio networks. Different from existing underlay access techniques, channel assembling, spectrum adaptation and restricted channel occupancy are also considered in the proposed strategy in order to achieve better performance in the secondary network. Accordingly, a partial channel occupancy mode, w…
A new and simplified approach to assess the pavement surface micro- and macrotexture
2017
Abstract Road safety depends on pavement skid resistance and surface texture. Skid resistance mainly depends on micro-texture and macrotexture. Skid and texture measurements on samples, in the laboratory, at the preliminary stage of the design, would enhance the design in terms of timing, costs, and reliability. Consequently, this study aims at setting up and validating simple methods for assessing surface texture and skid resistance based on core/sample measurements. Experiments were carried out and predictive relationships were set up to explain and predict results. Under given conditions, miniaturised macro-and microtexture tests (modified EN 13036-1 and modified EN 13036-4, respectively…
E-mail, Facebook, and Mobile Phones as Essential Tools for Lower Secondary School Students’ Communication
2014
The process of communication in the contemporary world and classroom has changed due to the Internet becoming more popular as an important means of exchanging information among young people. The Internet has also influenced relations and modes of communication between students and teachers. In consequence, the social distance between teachers and students has shortened and their relations have become less strict and formal. The following study concerns teacher–student, student–student classroom practices in lower secondary school, and addresses the issue of students’ preferences in communication and teacher–student communication satisfaction. The participants were 16-year-olds from two vill…
The Culture on the Palm of Your Hand: How to Design a User Oriented Mobile App for Museums
2014
The increased usage of mobile apps has a great potential for the tourism industry. Through the use of mobile apps, web portals and social media may allow a fast and wide diffusion of awareness for museum and attract a large number of visitors, thus increasing the value of their image, with moderate investments. The aim of this chapter is to identify the key factors as antecedents of customer satisfaction for the design of a mobile app for a museum. To this aim, the authors use the Kano model that allows categorizing service attributes according to how they are perceived by customers and estimating their impact on customer satisfaction. This model is adopted in order to identify express and …
