ABSTRACTIn this article, I analyse cinematic time and space and their interaction, in which nation-ness is articulated as a unifying identity in the epic films Lācplēsis/Bear-Slayer (Latvia, Aleksandrs Rusteiķis, 1930) and Noored Kotkad/Young Eagles (Estonia, Theodor Luts, 1927, digitally remastered in 2008). In discussing the timespace organization of nation-ness in these films, I address representations of the political ‘birth of a nation’ and modern national identity. On the relative sizes of learnable sets

Abstract Measure and category (or rather, their recursion-theoretical counterparts) have been used in theoretical computer science to make precise the intuitive notion “for most of the recursive sets”. We use the notions of effective measure and category to discuss the relative sizes of inferrible sets, and their complements. We find that inferable sets become large rather quickly in the standard hierarchies of learnability. On the other hand, the complements of the learnable sets are all large.
The pruning-grafting lattice of binary trees

AbstractWe introduce a new lattice structure Bn on binary trees of size n. We exhibit efficient algorithms for computing meet and join of two binary trees and give several properties of this lattice. More precisely, we prove that the length of a longest (resp. shortest) path between 0 and 1 in Bn equals to the Eulerian numbers 2n−(n+1) (resp. (n−1)2) and that the number of coverings is (2nn−1). Finally, we exhibit a matching in a constructive way. Then we propose some open problems about this new structure.
Split Bregman Method for Gravitational Wave Denoising

This paper presents a progress report in our aim to develop a Total Variation algorithm for denoising of gravitational waves. These algorithms, are routinely employed in the context of image processing and they do not need any a priori information on the signals. We apply our method to two different types of numerically-simulated gravitational wave signals, namely burst produced from the core collapse of rotating stars and waveforms from binary black hole mergers, and present a preliminary assessment of its capabilities.
Dynamical environments of relativistic binaries: The phenomenon of resonance shifting

In this article, we explore both numerically and analytically how the dynamical environments of mildly relativistic binaries evolve with increasing the general relativity factor $\gamma$ (the normalized inverse of the binary size measured in the units of the gravitational radius corresponding to the total mass of the system). Analytically, we reveal a phenomenon of the relativistic shifting of mean-motion resonances: on increasing $\gamma$, the resonances between the test particle and the central binary shift, due to the relativistic variation of the mean motions of the primary and secondary binaries and the relativistic advance of the tertiary's pericenter. The Global Coastal Permeability Database contains both the input and output data of the Global Coastal Permeability Model developed by Tschaikowski et al. (2023) and available at DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.7845568. The model is implemented in R and calculates the coastal permeability for each shoreline segment of the global shoreline vector created by Sayre et al. (2019) with a 30-meter resolution and covering a spatial extent of 180.0°W to 180.0°E longitude and 60.8°S to 83.7°N latitude. Au n+-induced decomposition of N2O

Reactions between small gold cluster ions, Au, and N2O were studied in a Penning trap mass spectrometer. Gold clusters were produced by laser vaporization and injected into a Penning trap. After reaction times of 50–7000ms the products were detected by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. For the major reaction channel, Au + N2OAu1,2N + NO+, rates of (0.9±0.1)×10−12 cm3 s−1 and (2.4±0.4)×10−12 cm3 s−1 were determined which are about a factor 500 below the collision rate. The corresponding activation energies for N2O decomposition were estimated to lie below 0.6 eV and 0.3 eV. A Gravitational-wave Measurement of the Hubble Constant Following the Second Observing Run of Advanced LIGO and Virgo

This paper presents the gravitational-wave measurement of the Hubble constant (H 0) using the detections from the first and second observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detector network. The presence of the transient electromagnetic counterpart of the binary neutron star GW170817 led to the first standard-siren measurement of H 0. Here we additionally use binary black hole detections in conjunction with galaxy catalogs and report a joint measurement. Our updated measurement is H 0 = km s-1 Mpc-1 (68.3% of the highest density posterior interval with a flat-in-log prior) which is an improvement by a factor of 1.04 (about 4%) over the GW170817-only value of km s-1 Mpc-1. AbstractWe provide a trace partitioned Gray code for the set of q-ary strings avoiding a pattern constituted by k consecutive equal symbols. The definition of this Gray code is based on two different constructions, according to the parity of q. This result generalizes, and is based on, a Gray code for binary strings avoiding k consecutive 0's.
