Iron is an essential micronutrient that participates as a cofactor in a broad range of metabolic processes including mitochondrial respiration, DNA replication, protein translation and lipid biosynthesis. DNA-repair mechanisms enable cells to maintain their genetic information by protecting it from mutations that may cause malignant growth. Recent evidence suggests that specific DNA-repair enzymes contain ISCs (iron–sulfur clusters). The nuclearencoded protein frataxin is essential for the mitochondrial biosynthesis of ISCs. Frataxin deficiency causes a neurodegenerative disorder named Friedreich's ataxia in humans. Iron is an essential micronutrient for all eukaryotic organisms because it participates as a redox-active cofactor in many biological processes, including DNA replication and repair. Eukaryotic ribonucleotide reductases (RNRs) are Fe-dependent enzymes that catalyze deoxyribonucleoside diphosphate (dNDP) synthesis. The calcium channel and the 'calcium release channel' of muscle membrane of the cockroach Periplaneta americana have been characterized. Biological assays with calcium channel blockers and ryanodine on different insects and acari revealed pronounced insecticidal effects with ryanodine, but not with calcium channel blockers, at concentrations between 0.1 and 300 μg ml -1 . Calretinin/PSA-NCAM immunoreactive granule cells after hippocampal damage produced by kainic acid and DEDTC treatment in mouse.

There is a dramatic increase in the number of lightly immunoreactive calretinin cells in the granular layer of the dentate gyrus of the mouse hippocampus 1 day after excitotoxic injury using kainic acid combined with the zinc chelator diethyldithiocarbamate. At 7 days after treatment, these cells are strongly immunoreactive for calretinin and for the polysialated form of the glycoprotein neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM). The reexpression of calretinin and PSA-NCAM after treatment corresponds well with the loss of input from the damaged hilar mossy cells. In skin, hemidesmosomal protein complexes attach the epidermis to the dermis and are critical for stable connection of the basal epithelial cell cytoskeleton with the basement membrane (BM). In muscle, a similar supramolecular aggregate, the dystrophin glycoprotein complex links the inside of muscle cells with the BM. A component of the muscle complex, dystroglycan (DG), also occurs in epithelia. In this study, we characterized the expression and biochemical properties of authentic and recombinant DG in human skin and cutaneous cells in vitro. The ideal method for mRNA detection should be fast, inexpensive, sensitive, and reliable.
