Precision atomic physics techniques for nuclear physics with radioactive beams

2012

Atomic physics techniques for the determination of ground-state properties of radioactive isotopes are very sensitive and provide accurate masses, binding energies, Q-values, charge radii, spins, and electromagnetic moments. Many fields in nuclear physics benefit from these highly accurate numbers. They give insight into details of the nuclear structure for a better understanding of the underlying effective interactions, provide important input for studies of fundamental symmetries in physics, and help to understand the nucleosynthesis processes that are responsible for the observed chemical abundances in the Universe. Penning-trap and and storage-ring mass spectrometry as well as laser spe…

Deconvolution procedure of the UV-vis spectra. A powerful tool for the estimation of the binding of a model drug to specific solubilisation loci of b…

2015

UV-vis-spectra evolution of Nile Red loaded into Tween 20 micelles with pH and [Tween 20] have been analysed in a non-conventional manner by exploiting the deconvolution method. The number of buried sub-bands has been found to depend on both pH and bio-surfactant concentration, whose positions have been associated to Nile Red confined in aqueous solution and in the three micellar solubilisation sites. For the first time, by using an extended classical two-pseudo-phases-model, the robust treatment of the spectrophotometric data allows the estimation of Nile Red binding constant to the available loci. Hosting capability towards Nile Red is exalted by the pH enhancement. Comparison between bin…

Ab initio study of the C60+Na system

2004

Abstract In this work we present the first CAS-CI calculation of the potential-electronic curves for the lowest states of the C 60 +Na system using a set of local orbitals. These orbitals permit to select a small active space describing the ionic interaction between the C 60 and the Na atom. A binding energy of about 3 eV has been found, a value substantially larger than previous theoretical results.

PACAP induces bradycardia in guinea-pig heart by stimulation of atrial cholinergic neurones

1996

Based on previous studies which indicated that pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) acts as a positive inotropic and chronotropic substance in different species via the cAMP signal transduction pathway, the objective of the present work was to investigate cAMP-regulated myocardial key proteins in response to PACAP in isolated ventricular cells of the guinea pig. Surprisingly, the two molecular forms of PACAP, PACAP(1-27) and PACAP(1-38), showed no effect on intracellular cAMP-levels, L-type Ca2+ channel current or phosphorylation of troponin inhibitor (TnI) and phospholamban (PLB). Additionally, inotropy of isolated guinea-pig ventricular strips was not affected by the neu…

On the opioid receptor subtype inhibiting the evoked release of 3H-noradrenaline from guinea-pig atria in vitro

1986

1. Guinea-pig isolated atria were incubated and loaded with 3H-(−)-noradrenaline. The intrinsic nerves were stimulated with trains of 5 or 35 field pulses (4 Hz), and the evoked efflux of 3H-noradrenaline and of total tritium was determined in the presence of atropine, corticosterone, desipramine, and phentolamine by liquid scintillation spectrometry. 2. Ethylketocyclazocine (1.4 nmol/l, IC50), MR 2033 (9.1 nmol/l), dynorphin A (1–13) (25 nmol/l, peptidase inhibitors present), etorphine (71 nmol/l), and [d-Ala2, d-Leu5]-enkephalin (>10 μmol/l, peptidase inhibitors present) inhibited the stimulation-evoked efflux of 3H-noradrenaline in a concentration-dependent manner, but not morphine up to…

The size of aryl linker between two polyaza-cyclophane moieties controls the binding selectivity to ds-RNA vs ds-DNA

2013

Aryl-linked (pyridine- vs. phenanthroline-) bis-polyaza pyridinophane scorpiands PYPOD and PHENPOD strongly bind to the double stranded DNA and RNA, whereby very intriguing RNA over DNA selectivity is finely tuned by aryl-linker length and aromatic surface. Moreover, PYPOD and PHENPOD dimer formation at high compound/polynucleotide ratios is highly sensitive to the fine interplay between the steric and binding properties of compound-dimers and the DNA minor groove/RNA major groove. That is demonstrated by significantly different induced CD spectra, which allow spectroscopic differentiation between various DNA/RNA secondary structures. A significantly higher (micromolar) antiproliferative ef…

The Low-Affinity ATP Binding Site of the Escherichia coli SecA Dimer Is Localized at the Subunit Interface

1997

The homodimeric SecA protein is the ATP-dependent force generator in the Escherichia coli precursor protein translocation cascade. SecA contains two essential nucleotide binding sites (NBSs), i.e., NBS1 and NBS2 that hind ATP with high and low affinity, respectively. The photoactivatable bifunctional cross-linking agent 3'-arylazido-8-azidoadenosine 5'-triphosphate (diN(3)ATP) was used to investigate the spatial arrangement of the nucleotide binding sites of SecA, DiN(3)ATP is an authentic ATP analogue as it supports SecA-dependent precursor protein translocation and translocation ATPase, UV-induced photo-cross-linking of the diN(3)ATP-bound SecA results in the formation of stable dimeric s…

Protein quality control during aging involves recruitment of the macroautophagy pathway by BAG3.

2009

The Hsc/Hsp70 co-chaperones of the BAG (Bcl-2-associated athanogene) protein family are modulators of protein quality control. We examined the specific roles of BAG1 and BAG3 in protein degradation during the aging process. We show that BAG1 and BAG3 regulate proteasomal and macroautophagic pathways, respectively, for the degradation of polyubiquitinated proteins. Moreover, using models of cellular aging, we find that a switch from BAG1 to BAG3 determines that aged cells use more intensively the macroautophagic system for turnover of polyubiquitinated proteins. This increased macroautophagic flux is regulated by BAG3 in concert with the ubiquitin-binding protein p62/SQSTM1. The BAG3/BAG1 ra…

Computational modelling of boron nitride nanostructures based on density-functional tight-binding

2014
