A comparative analysis of the sustainability of rice cultivation technologies using the analytic network process

2010

Sustainability of local farming systems and technologies is a very important issue that faces notorious measurement difficulties. Multi-criteria methods may help researchers to solve empirical problems in the construction of composite sustainability indicators and in ranking agricultural technologies according to their sustainability. This paper shows how a multi-criteria decision-making technique, the Analytic Network Process (ANP), can be fruitfully employed to this end. Contrary to simpler and hierarchical goal-criteria-alternative approaches, in ANP all the elements in the network can be related in any possible way, which means that a network can incorporate feedback and interdependent …

2023

R-code and data for replicating statistical analyses used in the study: Increasing human environmental footprint does not lead to biotic homogenization of forest bird communities in northern USA. This study examined how forest loss and increased human domination in the state of Minnesota in the USA were associated with diversity of forest birds using bird count data.

The Giant Butterfly-moths of the Natural History Museum of Wrocław University, Poland, with comments about Friedrich Wilhelm Niepelt and his insect c…

2013

Even though natural history museums are seen by some as rather gloomy places, they are actually repositories of countless treasures and magnificent sources of knowledge. The Museum of Natural History of the University of Wroclaw is no exception. A process to curate all Museum’s Lepidoptera that started in 2012 allowed us to find among its several collections, the one that originally belonged to the renowned entomologist and insect dealer Friedrich Wilhelm Niepelt. Among the few moth groups in such collection 37 specimens within 19 species and 22 taxa of the neotropical giant butterfly-moths (Castniidae) were found. Even though several of those specimens lack detailed collecting information,…

Medicinal and aromatic plants in agricultural research, when considering criteria of multifunctionality and sustainability

2022

Over the last twenty years, agriculture has witnessed significant changes in terms of energy requirements, advanced technologies and practices. This is in response to the impacts of crop production on the climate and environment and increasing awareness of the importance of agricultural sustainability through organic farming. Agriculture encompasses complex production systems and certain aspects of multifunctionality and sustainability have become fundamental for these systems. Agricultural activity can provide various functions in agro-ecosystems, such as producing food, managing natural resources, and conserving landscape and plant biodiversity; contributing to the cultural, historical an…

The late Late Albian (Mortoniceras fallax Zone) cephalopod fauna from the Bracquegnies formation at Strépy-Thieu (Hainaut, southern Belgium).

2016

Excavations in 1989-1990 for the construction of a boat lift near the villages of Strépy and Thieu, east of Mons (province of Hainaut, southern Belgium), exposed a 40-metre section of the Bracquegnies Formation (Haine Green Sandstone Group; the ‘Meule de Bracquegnies’ of previous authors). Several hundred well-preserved, silicified cephalopods were collected from between 15 and 35 metres above the base of the sequence temporarily exposed there. The fauna is: Eutrephoceras clementianum (d’Orbigny, 1840), Puzosia (Puzosia) mayoriana (d’Orbigny, 1841), Callihoplites tetragonus (Seeley, 1865), Discohoplites valbonnensis valbonnensis (Hébert & Munier-Chalmas, 1875), Cantabrigites cantabrigense S…

Description and phylogenetic relationships of a new species of treefrog of theOsteocephalus buckleyispecies group (Anura: Hylidae)

2020

The Osteocephalus buckleyi species group is widely distributed in primary and secondary forests of the Amazon Basin and Guiana Region. Based on integrative analysis, including morphological and genetic data, we estimate the phylogenetic relationships and species boundaries among populations of the Osteocephalus buckleyi group from the Ecuadorian Amazon, focusing on the O. verruciger-O. cannatellai species complex. Our results uncovered the existence of one confirmed candidate species from Sangay National Park and one unconfirmed candidate species. Here, we describe the new species which is morphologically and ecologically distinct from other Osteocephalus species. The new species is unusual…

Three new species of Anacharis Dalman, 1823 (Hymenoptera: Figitidae), with revised taxonomy and distribution records of Palaearctic and Indomalayan s…

2018

An update of the current knowledge of Anacharis Dalman, 1823 for the Palaearctic and Indomalayan regions is given. The previously known Palaearctic species Anacharis antennata Belizin, 1951, Anacharis eucharoides (Dalman, 1818), Anacharis immunis Walker, 1835 and Anacharis parapsidalis Belizin, 1951 are redescribed. Three new species are described: Anacharis fergussoni sp. nov. from Europe, Anacharis norvegica sp. nov. from Norway and Anacharis belizini sp. nov. from Thailand, the first recorded Indomalayan species for the genus. Anacharis gracilipes Ionescu, 1969, is synonymized with A. eucharoides , while Anacharis flavidicornis Kieffer, 1910 is transferred to the genus Aegilips Haliday, …
